On February 12, 2008, Mr. Lu Yaowu and his wife, Ms. Zhao Chunjie, Falun Gong practitioners from Gongzhuling City, Jilin Province, were arrested by officers from the Domestic Security Brigade of the Gongzhuling City Police Bureau and the Liufangzi Police Station. Even though Mr. Liu was soon released, officers were still trying to press charges against him. As a result, he was forced to leave home and live elsewhere.
Ms. Zhao Chunjie, who was cruelly tortured, was recently brought to trial. Her daughter, Lu Yiming, went everywhere to try to find a lawyer to defend her mother. Because the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) pressures attorneys not to take Falun Gong cases, Ms. Lu couldn't find anyone brave enough to defend her. So she, a student, had to defend her mother herself.
In her defense letter, she wrote: "My mother is a good person. She has never done anything to violate the law or her conscience. She used to have a very serious heart disease, high blood pressure, and tuberculosis, and she spent tons of money without getting healed. In 1998, after she saw on TV the miraculous effects of Falun Gong in terms of healing illnesses and keeping fit, she began to practice. As a result, her health improved tremendously. Her temper improved a lot, too. She is recognized by everyone in our neighborhood as being a nice person, as well as a wonderful daughter-in-law in my grandparents' eyes. This is what I have witnessed. However, on October 22, 2008, on her way to work, she was arrested by Wang Wenhui and others from the Liufangzi Police Station."
Ms. Lu condemned the actions of the police in her letter: "On April 23, 2008, a group of officers led by Liu Wenhui, who is the head of the Liu Fangzi Police Station, broke into our residence at Liufangzi Mine when nobody was at home. They confiscated a bank deposit book with 20,000 yuan, another bank deposit book with 4,500 yuan, a TV, a motorcycle, 5,000 yuan in cash, an umbrella, an alarm clock, and some other personal belongings. Our home was a mess after they left. Later we were only able to recover the bank deposit book with 4,500 yuan and the motorcycle.
"By following my younger sister, who goes to a secondary school, Wang Wenhui and others were able to track down my parents' other residence. On December 12, without showing any cause, they went to that residence, ransacked it, and arrested my parents.
"After that, the head of Liufangzi Police Station, Wang Wenhui, and others lied by claiming that, on April 23 when they searched our home, they found evidence sufficient to detain my mother."
Ms. Lu Yiming sued the police officers for fabricating evidence. She said in her letter: "Officers from Liufangzi Police Station claimed that on October 22, 2008, at our Gongzhuling residence, they found computers, DVDs, and so-called 'promotional items.' This residence was occupied by my parents and my younger sister. They rent it because it's close to my sister's school. They only rented one room in this three-bedroom apartment, which they shared with the landlord. The landlord owned the computer. It was re-installed the night before the police came in and searched the room, so there was nothing on it. The "100 DVDs" listed as evidence doesn't hold water, either, because I have asked the landlord, and all the DVDs contained either video-recordings of her child documenting his growing up or songs, and none of them belong to my mother.
"Apparently, it was police officers from Liufangzi that fabricated this evidence. It stipulates in Article No. 703 in our country's Criminal Act: 'For people who either destroy evidence or fabricate evidence, according to the degree of seriousness, they will either be sentenced to three years imprisonment or detention. For people in the judicial field who commit this crime, they are to receive more severe punishment.' It also stipulates in Article No. 45 of the Criminal Litigation Law that, no matter which party is involved in either fabricating or hiding or destroying evidence, it is against the law."
In closing, Lu Yiming stated: "My mother is a good person. She is innocent. Please find her not guilty and release her immediately."
