  • Thirty-Year-Old Mr. Wu Chunlong Tortured to Death in the Jiamusi Labor Camp

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Wu Chunlong from Jiamusi City, Heilongjiang Province was tortured in the Jiamusi City Labor Camp until he was near death. He was completely emaciated, was unable to think clearly, and could not speak when he was sent home on April 30, 2005. His condition gradually improved with the care of his family, but police from the Songlin Station had him under close monitoring. They constantly threatened and harassed Mr. Wu Chunlong, and he died on August 20, 2005, only 30 years old.

One week before Mr. Wu Chunlong died.

On August 20, 2005, 2 a.m., Mr. Wu Chunlong died.

On August 20, 2005, 2 a.m., Mr. Wu Chunlong died.

Mr. Wu Chunlong was emaciated from the torture he suffered.

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Wu Chunlong was a self-employed barber. He was first sentenced to three years at forced labor on November 3, 1999, and was tortured severely in the Jiamusi City Labor Camp during that term. He was forced to suffer the inhuman torture known as the tiger bench (1) for seven days at the end of November 2001. Other Falun Gong practitioners requested Mr. Wu's release, but when their pleas were rejected, they went on a hunger strike to protest. During this hunger strike, Mr. Yao Zhongliang, Mr. Xia Zhiliang, Mr. Dong Shaohua, and Mr. Li Jingfeng were locked in the Communication Room and force-fed. Their hands were cuffed on two sides of the bed, which allowed them to only sit or lie down all day. In addition their feet were bound. In order to visit his son, Mr. Wu Chunlong's father spent almost twenty thousand yuan. Finally Mr Wu Chunlong was released at the end of 2002. Mr. Wu Chunlong and his father had to move five times to avoid police harassment.

In October of 2003, Mr. Wu Chunlong had to borrow money to open a hair salon business. His studio opened on November 8, 2003. Only three days later, on November 11, 2003, policeman An Quanyi (male) from Yingjun Station arrested him and had him sentenced for the second time to three years forced labor.

Mr. Wu Chunlong was brutally tortured by prison guards Liu Hongguang (male), Yang Chunlong (male) and others. Mr. Wu went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution, and he was then force-fed and injected with unknown drugs. He started fainting a few days later, was incontinent and lost control of his bowels. Seven to eight days after he was force-fed, he lost all feeling from his lower back to his knees. He was unable to move his legs, his chest was cold, his mind blurry, he was physically emaciated and dying.

The guards, however, continued torturing him even as he was dying. One time Mr. Wu suddenly woke up, as the guards dragged him back to the washroom and doused him with cold water, then dragged him back to his cell. Another time he awoke with a shock in extreme pain, and he saw prisoner Wang Fu (male) was digging into his left collarbone with his hand.

Because Mr. Wu would often shout, "Falun Gong is good," prisoner Wang Fu was encouraged by the guards to gag him with a towel contaminated with feces. Mr. Wu often would awake with a dirty towel stuffed in his mouth.

The Labor Camp was concerned about being held responsible for Mr. Wu Chunlong's death. On April 30, 2005, prisoner guards Yang Chunlong (male) and Diao Yukun (gender unknown) sent him home in a taxi. Before allowing his family to see him, they deceived Mr. Wu's father into signing a statement that the family would assume full responsibility for Mr. Wu. They also tried to extort five thousand yuan from the family, but Mr. Wu's father had no money to give them. In the end he had to borrow three hundred yuan to give the guards.

When Mr. Wu Chunlong returned home, he was nothing but skin and bone. He couldn't sit or stand up straight, he couldn't think clearly, he had no facial expression and could not recognize his own father. His face was very pale, his left side bigger than the right side, one eye very red and swollen, the result of a beating. He could not answer any questions from his friends or family. He appeared to be without memory, thoughts or reflections.

After his fellow practitioners helped him study the Fa and do the exercises with him, his health improved greatly. His swollen face returned to normal, and he could speak a few sentences at a time.

On May 18, 2005, the Jiamusi City Labor Camp sent a guard to the Songlin Police Station, requesting that policeman Yin Xiaodong (male) closely monitor Mr. Wu Chunlong. In the early morning of May 19, 2005, Yin Xiaodong came to Mr. Wu Chunlong's home, demanding that Mr. Wu Chunlong come to the station house every month for interrogation and that Mr. Wu Chunlong return to the Jiamusi City Labor Camp once his health recovered. On May 20, 2005, Yin Xiaodong came to Mr. Wu's home again and requested that Mr. Wu Chunlong register a temporary living certification with photo identification.

Mr. Wu Chunlong was suffering with confusion in his mind. He had only recovered part of his memory. Police harassed him at his home, causing him to relive in his mind the terror of the labor camp. He lost appetite, had diarrhea, lost more weight, developed a high fever, had difficulty breathing, was very nervous and could not recognize his family.

At 2 a.m. on August 20, 2005, Mr. Wu Chunlong passed away from the terror he had endured at the age of only thirty.

    (1) Practitioners are forced to sit on a small iron bench that is approximately 20 cm (6 inches) tall with their knees tied together. With their hands tied behind their backs or sometimes placed on their knees, they are forced to sit up straight and look straight ahead. They are not allowed to turn their heads, close their eyes, talk to anyone or move at all. Several inmates are assigned to watch over the practitioners and force them to remain motionless while sitting on the bench. Usually some hard objects are inserted underneath the practitioners' lower legs or ankles to increase their pain. See illustration on

Mudanjiang Practitioner Ning Jun Dies after Suffering Repeated Torture

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Ning Jun from Mudanjiang City, Heilongjiang Province steadfastly practiced Falun Gong and exposed the truth of persecution. He was illegally held in a detention center, a brainwashing center and a forced labor camp. He was brutally tortured. Later, he was sentenced to five years of imprisonment and persecuted in Mudanjiang Prison. He was released on bail for medical treatment and died on August 12, 2005. More details follow:

    1. Introduced Falun Gong in Russia at Own Expense in 1999

Mr. Ning Jun, over 50, lived at western Second Road, Xi'an District, Mudanjiang City, Heilongjiang Province. He began to practice Falun Gong in 1996, and strived to be a good person as well as continually improving his Xinxing. After practicing Falun Gong, he returned the extra housing space that he did not deserve. He spent his own money to purchase Falun Gong book s and equipment to play Teacher's lectures on video tapes and cassettes. He also taught others the exercises.

Ning Jun and fellow practitioners went to Russia to introduce Falun Gong. On July 20, 1999, the unprecedented persecution of Falun Gong started in China. On July 30, practitioners who went to Russia were issued a warrant for arrest and repatriated in Haishenwai Russia. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs teamed up with the National Security Bureau and Public Security Bureau, and arrested them at Dongning Customs. Their passports, identifications and belongings were confiscated. They were held in Dongning Public Security Bureau, Mudanjiang City Public Security Bureau, Xi'an Public Security Sub-bureau in Mudanjiang City, and Xianfeng Local Police Station in Mudanjiang City. After many investigations, the police could not find any evidence of crime, and then obtained their fingerprints and a signed statement that they would no longer go abroad. Only then did the police notify practitioners' families to bail them out.

    2. Persecuted in Sidao Forced Labor Camp, Bailed out for Medical Treatment

On September 7, 1999, Ning Jun went to Beijing to appeal on behalf of Falun Gong with fellow practitioners. Three days later, the local police of Beijing arrested them and took them to Lizhiyuan Local Police Station in Beijing. On September 11, the police tried to send them to a detention center but were rejected. The next day, the 610 officers of Mudanjiang City in Beijing handcuffed them and took them to Mudanjiang City Public Security Bureau, and they also confiscated more than 4000 yuan from practitioners. Afterwards, all the practitioners were in Mudanjiang City No. 2 Detention Center for further persecution. In the end of 1999, Mr. Ning was sent to a brainwashing center. Ning Jun firmly believed in Falun Gong. On January 2, 2000, he was taken back to the detention center and sentenced to two years of forced labor.

On March 17, 2000, Mr. Ning Jun was transferred to Sidao Forced Labor Camp. While in the forced labor camp, because Ning Jun was a steadfast practitioner, the police transferred him to many groups for torture. While he was in the 3rd Group, the police locked up several Falun Gong practitioners and more than ten inmates in a small room of six square meters with no ventilation. They ate, used the toilet and slept in the room; the sanitary conditions were extremely poor, the bedding was very dirty, and the room was wet and hot. Ning Jun had scabies all over his body. Policeman Long Fei, the instructor of the 3rd Group shocked Ning Jun with an electric baton. With the help of Mr. Ning's righteous thoughts, the policeman, however, shocked himself instead.

Ning Jun was also tortured by the so called "riding an airplane". Both his hands were cuffed behind his back, and a rope was hanging from above and tied to the handcuffs. When the rope was pulled up, the person would suspend in the air like "riding an airplane."

Mr. Ning was tortured to the point of having fluid accumulate in the liver, and his abdomen became very large. He had difficulty in walking and also had bloody urine. Qiao Jianwei, the secretary in charge of administration even incited inmates to assault Ning Jun, but the policemen turned a blind eye to it. They could not transform Ning Jun, therefore they sent him to the group that was designated to persecute Falun Gong. The police there feared that he might die in the prison, so they sent him to the hospital. He was diagnosed with liver ascites and unable to live much longer. The forced labor camp had to release him on bail for medical treatment.

Kou Wei, the policeman of the 3rd Group reported more medical expense, and it added more financial burden to Ning Jun. Ning Jun exposed the scandal of excessive hospital charge, and Kou Wei retaliated later.

After he returned home, the police officers from the prison regularly interrogated him. The local police officers often harassed him, and disturbed him even further. Five months later, the chief of administration section Ma Libiao and political instructor Li Longyu deceived Ning Jun into the forced labor camp for further persecution, and detained him for nine months beyond the term. He was released on October 11, 2001.

    3. Arrested Again and Persecuted to His Last Breath in Mudanjiang Prison

After he was set free, Ning Jun was still being harassed, interrogated, and his home was ransacked. He suffered a great deal emotionally and spiritually, and was forced to become homeless in order to avoid the persecution. On November 11, 2001, he was arrested again by officers from Xi'an Public Security Sub-bureau in Mudanjiang City. He was beaten, shocked with an electric baton and tempted with monetary gain. They used various means to interrogate him and attempted to force a confession. He held his righteous thoughts firmly, and went home within a week. He continued to clarify the truth.

The police treated Ning Jun as a wanted criminal. They issued a warrant for his arrest, secretly recorded his voice, took his photos and hunted him everywhere. Ning Jun could not work and returned home, and became destitute.

On September 9, 2002, after he had been wanted by the police for half a year, Ning Jun was reported by a patient when clarifying the truth at Hongqi Hospital in Mudanjiang City. He was arrested and tortured by officers from Aimin Public Security Sub-bureau of Mudanjiang City. He was later held in the detention center.

During the illegal detention, Ning Jun was in critical condition due to the persecution. At the end of 2003, the detention center issued two terminally ill notices to Aimin Public Security Sub-bureau that was handling the case, but the notices were ignored by the officers for various reasons. Meanwhile, he was sentenced to five years of imprisonment, and sent to Mudanjiang Prison before the 2004 Chinese New Year.

In September 2004, Ning Jun was extremely ill and needed to go to the hospital. After his family paid the fee, the prison delayed and did not sent him to police hospital until November, and at the same time, released him on bail for medical treatment.

After Ning Jun went home, he studied the Fa and improved his inner nature, helped others, woke up other practitioners, and continued to tell the truth about Falun Gong. Because of the long term persecution, Ning Jun died on August 12, 2005.

9-Year-Old Ma Fan Dreams of Her Parents, Locked Away in Forced Labor Camps

    Charming and happy Ma Fan

(Clearwisdom.net) Ma Fan is a happy and charming nine-year-old girl who, until recently, was always smiling. However, she has not smiled much since March of 2005, because now she can only be with her parents in her dreams. In March, her parents were arrested by police for helping a friend named Gao Rongrong get out of prison. Gao Rongrong's face was disfigured during her detention in prison for her belief in "Truth, Compassion and Forbearance."

Photo: Baby Ma Fan with her dad Ma Yuping and mom Zhang Lirong

"Truth, Compassion and Forbearance are good. Falun Gong is good!" Ma Fan repeats this sentence. Her mother used to suffer from stomach pain, headaches, and postpartum back pain. All of these disappeared after she started practicing Falun Gong.

In July of 1999, the large-scale persecution of Falun Gong began. On October 13, 2000, four-year-old Ma Fan and her mom went to appeal in Beijing. They consequently were sent to Longshan detention center in Shenyang. The police there were very vicious. Little Ma Fan was terrified when they body-searched her. Several days later her grandma took her home but her mom was still detained there until nearly two years later.

Ma Fan found that her mom had become skinny and pale. She also lost lots of hair. From the adults' conversation, Ma Fan learned that the police ruthlessly tortured her mom in order to force her to give up her beliefs. The torture methods included being forced to stand in the corner in a certain position, to kneel down, squat on a stool, force-feeding, sleep deprivation for one week, and being sent to a male labor camp (Zhangshi Labor Camp). After practicing Falun Gong, her mom became more kind and patient. She was always ready to help others. The neighbors all praised her. A grandfather patted Ma Fan's head and sighed, "No place for justice."

Photo: Her mom Zhang Lirong was tortured in Shenyang Longshan Labor Camp for her belief. This is a re-enactment of "force-feeding"

Although confused, Ma Fan was happy that her mom was finally back home. However, her happiness did not last long. Her dad clarified the truth to passengers when he worked as a taxi driver. As a result, he was sent to the Shenyang City's Zhangshi Labor Camp in September, 2002 when she was just in first grade.

Since starting practicing Falun Gong in 2001, her dad became very kind to others. He would help his wife to do housework and clean the public stairs. He would help seniors and children in his work. Several times he found cell phones worth more than one thousand yuan and he returned them. When people gave him money to thank him, he said, "I practice Falun Gong. I was taught to always think of others and be kind. How can I accept your money?" They were very touched, marveling that, "such a good person truly exists in today's society."

However, this good person was detained for over one year for speaking the truth. This March, Ma Fan's parents were once again taken away and sentenced to labor camps for three years. Her mom is detained at the 1st division of Masanjia labor camp in Liaoning province. Her dad is detained at the 1st division of the Shenxin Forced Labor Camp. Now she has to live with her grandmother who is over sixty years old and in poor health. This summer, Ma Fan heard that the friend, Gao Rongrong, who her parents helped to rescue and managed to get out of prison, died mysteriously in an emergency room under police surveillance. Now she is even more worried about her parents' safety.

Photo: Handwork by Ma Fan: my parents sit on moon boat

Little Ma Fan always dreams about her parents. In handwork art class, she made a poster. She said, "In my dream, my parents are sitting on the moon boat. They believe in Truth, Compassion and Forbearance. Bad people cannot reach them. Thus my parents will never leave me."

Practitioner Violently Abused by Political Policeman in Zhu City, Shandong Province

On December 18, 1999, Ms. Qiu Jiaxiu, a Falun Gong practitioner from the Qiujiazhuang village, Zhucheng, Shandong province, rode her bicycle along with another fellow practitioner to Beijing to appeal on behalf of Falun Gong. In Beijing, they were arrested and taken to the Xinghua police station and interrogated.

It was a very cold day. Cao Jinhui, the assistant leader of the Politics and Security Department of the police bureau at Zhucheng, came. Cao slapped Qiu Jiaxiu's face repeatedly. Later on, he beat her with rubber clubs and forced her to sit on the ground with her arms straight up. He would beat her if she did not hold her arms up straight. Qiu Jiaxiu was forced to sit like that for a long time.

In the evening, Cao Jinhui and others came back after getting drunk, and they started to interrogate her again. One of the young men said, "We drank some alcohol, and tonight we will beat you until you tell us something." Cao Jinhui and that young man beat her body, hands, and arms with rubber clubs. They tore her hair out and flicked her forehead with their fingers. After that, they asked someone to take Qiu Jiaxiu back to the Qiujiazhuang office. Qiu Jiaxiu was detained there for one month. They confiscated the 1,300 yuan that she had with her and fined an additional 5,000 yuan.

On March 2, 2000, Qiu Jiaxiu went to Cangwan Park to do the Falun Gong exercises, and subsequently was taken to the detention center. She was detained there for four days. Zhu Wei called her into the office, where Cao Jinhui slapped her face hard twice. He asked whether she would go to appeal again while he was beating her. He said he would make her family destitute. Zhu Wei then went outside and found a wooden board about four centimeters wide and two centimeters thick, and used it to beat Qiu Jiaxiu's legs. He sarcastically told Qiu Jiaxiu that he would help her "get rid of her karma." The wooden board was cracked during the beating. Wang Yongjuan, a Falun Gong practitioner who was washing the quilt covers in the detention center, heard the beating in the room and ran in to stop them. She was also beaten with the wooden board a few times. Cao Jinhui asked Wang Yongjuan to beat Qiu Jiaxiu, but Wang refused and asked him why she would beat up a good person. Cao Jinhui said viciously, "It does not matter if I beat you Falun Gong practitioners to death."

The staff members beat Qiu Jiaxiu so badly that she could not sit down. She had to kneel first and then slowly sit down. A few days later, in order to protest the persecution, Qiu Jiaxiu went on hunger strike for seven days. She was forced fed with a tube sticking into her nose and going all the way down into her stomach. It was extremely hard to endure. She was forced fed three times like this. On the fourth time, they pinched her nose and poured powdered milk into her mouth. They would not stop until they finished pouring in all the powdered milk while several people restrained Qiu Jiaxiu. It is hard to describe such suffering, as someone's life is being choked out of them. For each forced feeding, they would charge Qiu 50 yuan. During that time, the village director Gao Yunhai came and tried to force Qiu Jiaxiu to eat. He slapped her face several times and then sent her back to the village.

Because Qiu Jiaxiu insisted on not eating, on the 8th day of her hunger strike, the staff members had to ask her family members to take her home.

Qiu Jiaxiu's family members did not know that Qiu Jiaxiu was on a hunger strike in the detention center. When the police station asked her husband, who was not a practitioner, to go to the police station, he was scared because he was beaten up there earlier and fined 2,000 yuan by his factory. Under those circumstances, he did not know what would happen. Some time after that, he was fined another 1,000 yuan.

In May 2000, Qiu Jiaxiu went to Beijing to appeal for the second time. She was taken back by Shi Dechang, the security director. One night after a few days had passed, Cao Jinhui, Shi Dechang and others approached her. Cao Jinhui slapped Qiu Jiaxiu's face and dragged her around by the hair. While beating Qiu, he said, "It will be fine if I beat Falun Gong practitioners to death. It will be within the law no matter what we do." The next day, Zhang Xijie, the head of the police for the 2nd police district on People's Road, came and beat Qiu Jiaxiu again. For the next two days, they beat her day and night. The final time, Shi Dechang ripped her hair out and cursed her. Cao Jinhui and another perpetrator stomped on her body and struck her with their hands. Cao found a broom and beat Qiu with it until it fell apart. Cao Jinhui and Shi Dechang twisted Qiu's wrists and injured them badly. Shi Dechang fined Qiu Jiaxiu 7,000 yuan. Later, her husband was coerced into writing a 6,000-yuan acknowledgement of debt.

On June 22, at around 9:30 pm, Zhang Xijie brought some people over to Qiu Jiaxiu's home and searched it without a warrant. They confiscated Falun Gong material found on her body. Qiu Jiaxiu asked them why they did all of this without a warrant. Zhang Xijie said, "For people like you, there is no need to give notice." Then, they arrested her and took her to the police station and locked her there for the whole night. The next morning, Cao Jinhui and others came and interrogated her, looking for information about practitioners who produce Falun Gong material. Qiu Jiaxiu didn't tell them anything. The police then beat her with rubber clubs until she lost consciousness. Four days later, they illegally searched her home again and confiscated her tape recorder and tapes.

On the morning of September 16, Qiu Jiaxiu was arrested and taken to the police station while she was making clothes at home.

In December 2002, Qiu Jiaxiu wrote a letter to her village party secretary Guo Shuhua. In the letter, she stated the benefits that she personally experienced after practicing Falun Gong and exposed the persecution of Falun Gong. Guo Shuhua then reported Qiu. Qiu Jiaxiu was arrested and not allowed to go home, even during the Spring Festival. Qiu Jiaxiu protested by initiating a hunger strike, and was sent home when her life seemed to be in peril.

On February 22, 2003, Cao Jinhui and others went to Qiu Jiaxiu's home again. They arrested her and sent her to the labor camp at Wang Village the next day without any legal proceedings. They sentenced her to two years of forced labor.

Details Regarding Practitioners Illegally Detained in Jiuquan Area, Gansu Province

Since July 20, 1999 Jiuquan Detention Center of Gansu Province has illegally detained over 40 Falun Gong practitioners from Jiuquan, Yumen, An'xi, Jiayuguan and Jinta etc.

Every day they are forced to do all kinds of tedious and lengthy labor, such as polishing gemstones. They are forced to polish 900-1000 gemstones every day.

Since the beginning of 2004, the Vice President of Jiuquan City Police Station, Shan Yubin has been responsible for persecuting Falun Gong in that city. He has coordinated with National Security Team Leader Chen Jianhua, Zheng Jun, Zhang Yanhong, Gaoqing (female) and others, to illegally arrest Falun Gong practitioners. Mr. Zhao Qingshan on the Verge of Death as a Result of Persecution, Daqing Prison Still Refuses to Release Him

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Zhao Qingshan from Harbin has been sentenced to 11 years in prison and is currently being held in the Daqing Prison. Due to the persecution he has suffered, he is now on the verge of death. He cannot hold down any food and has pain all over his body. He is no longer able to look after himself, and is in critical condition. The prison authorities had previously notified his family to bail him out for medical treatment, but lately, the prison authorities are refusing to go through the procedure, using various excuses.

Nearly one hundred Falun Gong practitioners, including Bu Fanwei, Cheng Feiming, Bi Yunfei and Wang Yudong are currently being held at the Daqing Prison. Their lives are in danger. We urgently call on the world human rights organizations, the world organizations that investigate the persecution of Falun Gong, and justice-loving people from all walks of life to lend a helping hand to stop the persecution and to return the freedom of belief back to the people in China.

Mr. Zhao Qingshan, born in 1951, was an employee of the Harbin Vegetable Company. Before practicing Falun Gong, he suffered from various physical problems including insufficient blood supply to the brain and numbness of the right hand. After he started practicing Falun Gong in 1997, he became very healthy both physically and mentally. However, since the suppression of Falun Gong by the Chinese Communist Party began, Mr. Zhao was forced to become homeless in order to avoid being arrested and persecuted. Later, he was detained in the No. 7 Division of the Harbin City Police Department. He was brutally tortured during the interrogation. He became extremely weak and frail due to the torture, and he was released on bail for medical treatment. Mr. Zhao was arrested again in May, 2003 by the police from Harbin City Police Department. Zhao Guang, Fan Jiayuan and other officers tried to extort a confession from Mr. Zhao by cruel torture. Afterwards, Mr. Zhao's face was misshapen and his health was severely damaged, and he was sent to Harbin's Dongli District Detention Centre for recovery. When his health was getting better, Mr. Zhao was sentenced by the Dongli District Court in a secret trial to 11 years of imprisonment. After the Chinese Lunar New Year of 2003, Zhao Qingshan was transferred to Harbin Prison. On July 1, 2004 Mr. Zhao was transferred to Daqing Prison to be further persecuted.

In July 2004, when his family members went to Daqing Prison to visit him, they found that Mr. Zhao was extremely weak. In October 2004, his family members came to visit him again and brought him warm cotton-padded clothes, but they were not allowed to see him and even the cotton-padded clothes were returned.

In 2005, during the Chinese Lunar New Year, his family members traveled a long way to visit him. Prison guard Pan Shaolin tried every means to stop them. They persevered and finally saw Mr. Zhao. By that time, Mr. Zhao was extremely frail and his voice was very weak. One could hardly hear him, even talking to him in close proximity.

On July 14, 2005, Pan Shaolin informed Mr. Zhao's family that the prison authorities had sent him to Daqing No. 4 Hospital for treatment. Not long after, the prison authorities had to send Mr. Zhao to Daqing Oil Field Hospital for a checkup. The hospital diagnosed him with a blood clot in the brain, high blood pressure, and other diseases (his family has not been allowed to see the medical reports).

On July 26, Pan Shaolin notified Mr. Zhao's family to go through the procedure of bailing him out for medical treatment. On August 1, Mr. Zhao's family finished the necessary paperwork. On August 9, the Provincial Justice Department approved the bail and at the same time the department's verification center notified Daqing Prison to go and pick up the forms for the bail. However, Daqing Prison suddenly refused the bail. It argued that an official surnamed Zhou from the Procuratorate, stationed in the prison, objected because Mr. Zhao Qingshan had served less than one third of his sentence.

Mr. Zhao's family asked to see the prison leaders. The prison officials refused their request. When the family members argued with them, one prison guard even threatened to report them to police for "obstructing official business." The prison authorities claimed that Mr. Zhao Qingshan's life was not in danger and said that the verification report from the Provincial Justice Department did not contain the words of "life threatening."

On the evening of August 12, when Mr. Zhao's family phoned Pan Shaolin about the bail, Pan said, "Zhao Qingshan has not served one third of his sentence, therefore he cannot be released on bail for medical treatment." The family members said, "When the prison authorities notified us to post bail for Mr. Zhao for medical treatment, he had not served one third of his sentence. Why do you raise this issue now?" Pan Shaolin said, "Zhao Qingshan's life is not in danger." Pan claimed, "The verification report did not contain the words 'life threatening.' Only when an authorized hospital certifies that his life is in danger can we release him on bail." Mr. Zhao's family said, "Now we formally request to take Zhao Qingshan to the hospital for a checkup." Pan Shaolin turned down the request and said "We have already given him a medical checkup."

Mr. Zhao's family asked, "From Zhao Qingshan's present status, his life is really in danger. We want to take him to the hospital for another checkup but you disagree. If Zhao Qingshan dies, who will shoulder the responsibility for his death?" Pan said with a bit of excitement, "The prison would not shoulder this responsibility. It is Zhao Qingshan who does not admit his guilt and refuses to submit himself to the law." Mr. Zhao's family said, "As a matter of fact, you all know that all Falun Gong practitioners are good people. We must look at the issue from the angle of cherishing his life. We must not ignore people's lives." Pan claimed, "People die in prison. Birth, old age, sickness, and death are only natural. Some time ago, several inmates in their 40s old died in Daqing Prison. Wasn't that very normal?"

From the above conversation, it's not hard to see the hooligan nature of the guards and prison authorities, deliberately creating difficulties and ignoring people's lives. The officials even described deaths from abuse in detention as "dying of natural causes."

The following is an open letter that Mr. Zhao Qingshan's family wrote to the leaders of Daqing Prison.

    ********* ********* *********

An Open letter to the leaders of Daqing Prison,

The authorities and the prison guards,

We are the family members of Mr. Zhao Qingshan and we want to talk to you about bailing Mr. Zhao out for medical treatment.

Zhao Qingshan had suffered from various illnesses before practicing Falun Gong. He had fully regained his health after practicing the wonderful exercises. He was transformed from a person who had severely suffered from lingering illnesses to a person who was disease-free. During the process he also regained his hope for life. Falun Gong also helped him to shed all his bad habits and understand how to conduct himself well in society.

Since 1999 when Falun Gong was suppressed, Mr. Zhao, who had benefited so much from practicing Falun Gong, naturally continued to practice the exercises. He also clarified the truth to the government officials and the people. As a result, he was illegally detained and was physically and emotionally abused. When we said illegal detention you might not accept this, however, the suppression of Falun Gong was illegal from day one. The Chinese Constitution stipulates, "Citizens of the People's Republic of China enjoy freedom of belief," "Citizens of the People's Republic of China enjoy the freedom of speech" and "The personal dignity of citizens of the People's Republic of China is inviolable." Besides, you all said that all Falun Gong practitioners are good people. Since they are good people, then why do you want to "transform" them? What kind of people do you really want them to become? Since they are all good people how come the word "evil" is associated with Falun Gong? As Falun Gong practitioners, we can understand your prison guards' difficulties in dealing with the orders from above. However, you must be very clear that objectively you are doing a wrong deed. The issue of Falun Gong will be resolved sooner or later, and history will reveal the truth.

Now, Zhao Qingshan's life is in danger. You asked us to go through the procedures to bail him out for medical treatment not long ago. We don't understand why all of a sudden you refuse to follow through. Your only reason is that Zhao Qingshan has not served one third of his sentence and his life is not in danger.

As we all know that at the time when you first notified the family about releasing Mr. Zhao on bail for medical treatment, he had served less than one third of his sentence. Why has this become an issue today? If Mr. Zhao Qingshan's life is not in danger, why did you repeatedly send him to the hospital for checkups and ask the family to bail him out for medical treatment? All this clearly shows that Mr. Zhao Qingshan's life is in danger and he is in critical condition. Even if his life is not in danger, we also request that you release him right away. This is because Falun Gong practitioners held in the Daqing Prison have no safety guarantee and they could be in a life-threatening situation at any time. Xu Jishan was a very healthy person and was tortured to death in only four hours. We hope, from the consideration of humanitarianism and for being responsible for Mr. Zhao's life, the leadership at Daqing Prison will release him for medical treatment at an early date.

At the same time, our whole family has the following requests:

We ask Daqing Prison to allow us to go through the necessary procedures so that Mr. Zhao Qingshan can be released unconditionally for medical treatment.

If Daqing Prison does not allow us to bail Mr. Zhao out for medical treatment, then we need a clear statement from the prison authorities -- who will take the responsibility if Mr. Zhao dies.

As long as Mr. Zhao is not released, we will continue our efforts to rescue him. If he dies in the prison, we will definitely claim his body, conduct investigations and affix responsibility for his death. We will carry this out to the end.

    The Zhao family

Atrocities in the Guizhou Province Women's Labor Camp

I was illegally detained in the Guizhou Province Women's Labor Camp for three years, and I witnessed and experienced the CCP's (Chinese Communist Party) savage persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.

The labor camp ordered prisoners to monitor Falun Gong practitioners closely twenty-four hours a day. They lived and worked together. Two people had to share one narrow metal bed. We were forced to work for long periods of time to produce colored Christmas lights. Some practitioners were forced to work past midnight or 2 or 3 a.m. They were emaciated after the torture and lost their appetites. Some vomited blood.

Every two weeks or so, they forced us to watch false news and lectures slandering Falun Gong, and to write so-called "reform" essays. If someone did not meet the requirement, she would be sent to solitary confinement and even to the guards' chamber. In solitary confinement and the guards' chamber practitioners endured extreme torment and the guards constantly yelled at and beat practitioners. Sometimes several people brutally beat and kicked a practitioner. They broke some practitioners' legs. They banged practitioners' heads on windows and doors, force-fed practitioners with excrement, and put practitioners in refrigerators to torture them. Even worse, some were raped in the guards' chamber. I knew one Falun Gong practitioner who was tortured to death.

There was a female practitioner from Guiyang City who suffered 24 kinds of tortures, including having long bamboo shoots forced under her fingernails.

Most practitioners who were illegally detained in the Guizhou Province Women's Labor Camp had been sent to the so-called "attack team" twice, three times or even more. The guards incited prisoners to verbally abuse and brutally beat practitioners. A female practitioner was hung up for 3 days. The guard said, "Do you give up?" Then he pressed a lit cigarette into her breast.

The above is just the tip of the iceberg of the brutal persecution of Falun Gong practitioners at Guizhou Province Women's Labor Camp.

After July 20, 1999, under the instigation of the evil CCP, some institutions and organizations participated in the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. For example, from August to November 2000, many Falun Gong practitioners were affected by the CCP's "Judicial Bureau Re-education Assistance League." They became collaborators and formed a "Re-education Assistance Group." They brought practitioners from the Men's Labor Camp (i.e. Zhongba Labor Camp) to the Women's Labor Camp (i.e. Guizhou Province Women's Labor Camp). Seven or eight female collaborators besieged one male practitioner; they tried to brainwash the male practitioner with the so-called "using Fa to break Fa" according to the requirement of the CCP.

From August to December 2002, an evil person locked a female practitioner in the guards' chamber of the Garrison Division in the men's labor camp. He told criminals to rape the female practitioner. One of these criminals is Wang Jianqiang from Guiyang City.

(Note: "Guizhou Province Women's Labor Camp" was originally a team of the Zhongba Labor Camp, and in 1997 it became an independent camp.)

Five Practitioners Die as a Result of Persecution in Shandong, Hebei, and Henan Provinces

Ms. Sun Yuqiu was a 58-year-old Falun Gong practitioner living in Jitai Town, Shouguang City, Shandong Province. On December 22, 1999, her daughter, sister, and brother-in-law, plus several other Falun Gong practitioners, went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. On the way there, they were illegally arrested and detained. They suffered brutal beatings and were paraded through the streets like criminals. On top of this, each of them had to pay ten thousand yuan for being kept in captivity. Sun Yuqiu and her husband, plus about 100 other Falun Gong practitioners, were also illegally detained by the village commission for three days and three nights. They all encountered cruel beatings and torture. Sun Yuqiu was forced to watch her daughter being tortured in public. At the same time, Ms. Sun and her husband were also threatened by the officials and forced to pay over 2,000 yuan. After suffering all kinds of serious physical and mental torture, Ms. Sun was released, but by that time she was already in a coma. She died 9 days after she went home. The murderers who persecuted Falun Gong practitioners include Liu Xuxin, Liu Zhiqiang, Zhang Shaoyong, Yang Yongzhong, Yang Guizhong, Ding Shiguo, Zhang Yuqing and Su Xiuhua.

Ms. Zhang Xiuhua was 80 years old and lived in Changle County, Weifang City, Shandong Providence. She began to practice Falun Gong in 1995 and became very healthy both mentally and physically. After the persecution of Falun Gong began on July 20, 1999, she was arrested, harassed, threatened and detained over a two-year period. Due to this intense pressure, her old illnesses relapsed, and in July 2001 she passed away.

Mr. Shao Yaming was 66 years old and retired from the Baoding Prison of Hebei Province. Before he practiced Falun Gong, he was in very poor health and had a very serious skin problem. After starting to practice in 1995, he became very healthy. On April 25, 1999 he went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong and to clarify the truth. After July 22, 1999 when the CCP started to persecute Falun Gong, he once again went to Beijing to appeal for  the Fa. Police officials and other authorities attempted to arrest him, so he was forced to leave his home. Later the police and other officials coerced his family to call him back, and he was arrested on the way home. His house was ransacked, and all of his Falun Gong books were confiscated. Shao Yaming was constantly harassed during the last 6 years. The 610 authorities and police officials came regularly to his house to hound him. As a result, Mr. Shao lost his practicing environment and the mental pressure caused his physical condition to get worse and worse. Because of this continual harassment, he passed away in May 2005. His colleagues said that if they had allowed him to practice Falun Gong, he would not have died at all. Before Mr. Shau passed away, he asked other practitioners to post his solemn declaration and his statement of resignation from the CCP.

Mr. Liu Aichen was a 60-year-old practitioner living in Nanxule Village, Zanhuang County, Hebei Province. He started to practice Falun Gong in1996. After the persecution began on July 20, 1999, Mr. Liu walked between 30 and 40 miles to the provincial hall, passing through the patrols, in order to appeal for the rights of Falun Gong practitioners. Because he was deprived of a safe environment to practice Falun Gong and maintain his health, he died on December 21, 2004 from stomach cancer.

Mr. Kang Anrong was a Falun Gong practitioner who was approximately 60 years old and lived in Zhonghua Village, Huagong Town, Mengzhou City, Henan Province. In the winter of 1999, he was arrested in his city. They took off his coat and handcuffed him to a tree until his family paid 2,000 yuan for his release. He passed away in 2002.

    2. [Henan Province] Ruthless Persecution of Practitioners in the Third Forced Labor Camp, Henan Province

We are practitioners who are being held in Henan Province's Third Forced Labor Camp in Xuchang City. Since the Nine Commentaries were published, the labor camp police escalated the persecution of practitioners . The torture method they often used is "Tightening the Rope." They would insert a bottle or bricks between the rope and the practitioner's skin to further tighten the rope if they didn't hear the practitioner scream. Each tightening of the rope would cause more bleeding, injury, or even disability. To force the practitioners to give up Falun Gong, they selected a few thugs from the prisoners. They poured urine into practitioners' mouths, spit on them and daubed feces on practitioner's faces, pounded their toes with hammers, pricked their fingers with needles, brushed their rectum with a tooth brush, hit their genitals, pulled their pubic hair, handcuffed them behind the back, and exposed practitioners to blazing sun or heavy rain.

The police praised the prisoners who tortured practitioners and reduced their detention terms. Because they tortured practitioners savagely and forced some practitioners to give up Falun Gong practice, in the past four years, this forced labor camp was given the recognition award "Prinvincial Advanced Law-Execution Unit."

The policemen who brutalized practitioners included Yan Zhenye, Jiang Qingtai, Yao Jieshi, Jin Long, Ma Huating, Tan Junmin, Xu Shuiwang, Zhao Zhimin, Shen Jianwei and Xu Zuwang.

Furthermore, for many years he was unable to father a child due to health reasons, but his wife had a baby boy after he began practicing Falun Gong. Policemen said someone reported that Wang Yunlong distributed truth-clarifying materials. They stated if they found five copies of the book the Nine Commentaries, they could send him to a forced labor camp. Later they sent Wang Yunlong to a detention center for 15 days.

During detention, the National Security Team and Legal System Section went to Songyuan City to request authorization for one year of forced labor for Wang Yunlong, but failed. After practitioners published Wang Yunlong's circumstances of his arrest on the internet, practitioners overseas called the Fuyu County Police Department to clarify the truth. (1) For fifty days practitioners were forced to sit with backs straight and hands in their laps on hard benches for 18 hours per day. The authorities even limited practitioners' restroom use time. Because of the long time spent sitting on hard benches, practitioners' buttocks developed painful sores. Practitioners could not even urinate normally because of the pain. The labor camp was very wet, but the police would not allow practitioners to have fresh air or sunlight. Practitioners were locked up for so long that countless painful, itchy red scabs grew on the bodies of practitioners. See case on: /emh/articles/2002/7/29/24631.html
