Ms. Sun Yanpei, a student from the No. 1 High School of Zhaoyuan City, Shandong Province, has been held by the Zhaoyuan 610 Office for more than two weeks. She is currently being detained in an isolated building of the Nanling Southern Gold Mine in Taishang Village, Linglong Town. In order to conceal their illegal activities, the authorities have labeled the building as the "Legal Education and Training Center," but it is actually a brainwashing center where Falun Gong practitioners are persecuted.

Ms. Sun Yanpei, 16, is a student in the eleventh grade. Despite the fact that her parents were severely persecuted, she did very well at school and academically she ranked second highest of all tenth grade students on the city's standard test at the end of the last school year. Her father, Mr. Sun Guo, was sentenced to four years in prison in the provincial prison because he clarified the truth about the persecution of Falun Gong. Sun Yanpei's mother had suffered from multiple diseases before practicing Falun Gong and became healthy afterwards. Because Sun Yanpei's mother did not want to give up her belief in Falun Gong, she was forced to become homeless for almost four years in order to avoid arrest and harassment.

Sun Yanpei was abducted from her school by the 610 officials on August 11, 2005. Witnesses told the 610 officials, "This child's character is superb, and her GPA is excellent. Don't ruin her." The Zhaoyuan 610 officials said, "It won't affect the school to lose one good student."

The high school did not inform Sun Yanpei's family about her arrest until her uncle called her teacher on August 14, a school holiday. Yanpei had not been home for three days.

As early as July 2002, the deputy head of the 610 Office and Song Shuqin, the head of Linglong Brainwashing Center, had planned to send the then 13-year-old Sun Yanpei to the brainwashing center after forcing her mother into a homeless situation. They also asked Sun Yanpei for 1,800 yuan. Yanpei dared not go home during the entire summer holiday. On February 6, 2004, the Spring Festival holiday, two 610 officials accosted the family and wanted to search their home but did not succeed. Because the authorities constantly threatened and accosted the family, Sun Yanpei's grandmother began to suffer from mental disorders and is no longer able to independently manage her own daily life.

Sun Yanpei is currently detained at Lingnan Gold Mine Brainwashing Center in Zhaoyuan City. The authorities have threatened her and questioned her regarding her mother's whereabouts. They also tried to force her to write the Three Statements to renounce her belief in Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance (the principles of Falun Gong). Sun Yanpei has been on a hunger strike in protest and has demanded that they release her unconditionally and send her back to school. Her family also went to the 610 Office and demanded that Ms. Sun be returned to them. However, the officials refuse to release Sun Yanpei. Sixty-five-year-old Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zhang Jinrong from Pulandian City, Dalian was persecuted for a long time for her belief in Falun Gong. She was traumatized by the torture death of her son Cao Yuqiang in 2004. She passed away on August 23, 2005 and left behind her husband and nine-year-old grandson.

Ms. Zhang Jinrong, 65 years old, was born on August 17, 1941. She started practicing Falun Gong in February 1997 and benefited greatly.

After the persecution of Falun Gong began on July 20, 1999, officers from the Xudatun Town Police Station in Pulandian City harassed Zhang Jinrong and ransacked her home numerous times.

Zhang Jinrong's son Cao Yuqiang was illegally incarcerated in a detention center and a labor camp and he was brutally tortured. He was not released until he was disabled from torture. He passed away on April 8, 2004, less than one year after his release. Before his incarceration, he was 1.8 m [5.9 ft] tall and weighed about 80 kg [176 lbs]. His weight dropped to 40 kg [88 lbs] after the torture he experienced in detention. His thighs were thinner than a healthy person's arms. He had numerous scars on his body and deep cuts on his wrists from handcuffs.

Cao Yuxiang, whose wife remarried, left behind his nine-year-old son Cao Xiaodong.

Ms. Zhang Jinrong was traumatized by her son's death. In addition, the perpetrators never stopped persecuting her. She passed away on August 23, 2005.

Cao Xiaodong has been living with his grandparents. After Zhang Jinrong passed away, Cao Xiaodong and his 66-year-old grandfather had to depend on each other for their survival.

Ms. Yu Yali is on the brink of death! The former judicial representative of Xinhuo Surface Materials Technology Limited Company of Jinan City, Yu Yali was illegally sentenced to seven years imprisonment on November 16, 2004, and is currently imprisoned in the Shandong Province Women's Prison. She has dropped to 77 pounds from 132 pounds. Her mother hopes that more righteous voices and media within China and overseas will sound their concern about Ms. Yu's persecution.

Since she was imprisoned, Yu Yali has had little food, and she has become very weak. There is protein in her urine, indicating serious health problems. Her mother says that Yu Yali's life is in great danger and her family is worried. Each time they visit her, Yu Yali tells her family, "We are really not some kind of [slanderous word omitted], and we are not interested in politics. Every single thing I do is because I simply love my country and its people so much. If I am able to awaken the righteousness and conscience in the hearts of the people, there will be no regrets for me when I leave this world."

Plainclothes police trailed Falun Gong practitioners Yu Yali, Liu Xiangyun, Chu Zhongmei and Su Shuzhen in early April 2004. On April 21, they were arrested one after the other at home and at the east gate of Baotu Spring in Jinan City. Police officers broke into their homes illegally and confiscated their computers, printers, photocopiers and Falun Gong materials. On November 16, 2004, the Jinan City Tianqiao District Court illegally sentenced Liu Xiangyun, Yu Yali, and Chu Zhongmei to seven years in prison, and Su Shuzhen to four years in prison.

Yu Yali is being held in the Shandong Province Women's Prison. She has been forced into slave labor for her refusal to give up her belief in "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance," and is on a hunger strike to protest the inhumane persecution. Shandong Province Prison has forced Yu Yali to receive so-called "treatments" in the hospital, so they can extort money from her family. So far, they have taken more than 1,000 yuan in cash that Ms. Yu's family has been forced to pay for these "medical expenses."

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Xia Aixiang, about 42 years old, lived in Qiujiahe Village in Wutu Town of Changle County in Weifang City, Shandong Province. On August 16, 2001, Ms. Xia was secretly arrested when distributing Falun Gong truth-clarification materials. Since then her whereabouts have been unknown. The local town government officials deny the arrest.

According to sources, Ms. Xia was arrested on the evening of August 16, 2001, when she was distributing truth-clarification materials. She was probably first taken away by Qiaoguan Town Police Station officials and then transferred to Wutu Town Police Station. Her whereabouts remain unknown.

A witness saw a body that was totally wrapped up in the crematory. The police accompanied the body, but no family members were present. When asked, a person nearby said the body was of a Falun Gong practitioner.

According to a crematory employee, several days after August 16, 2001, the police sent over a female body. That body was secretly cremated.

Wutu Town officials had brutally tortured Ms. Xia before arresting her. The officials included Wang Xinbiao, Tian Benquan, Yin Yuankui, Liu Baowen, Zhao Dehui, Wang Dianfu, Zhang Yimei, among others. After the incident, officials such as Yin Yuankui, Tian Benquan, Wang Xinbiao were transferred to other towns.

After Ms. Xia went missing, Tian Benquan and Wang Xinbiao spread the rumor that Ms. Xia had divorced her husband, gone to work in Yaogou, and would no longer return home. In fact, Ms. Xia had a harmonious life with her husband and mother-in-law. Plus, she also has a lovely son who is a middle school student. The family had a happy life, and they are still asking around and looking for Ms. Xia Aixiang.

(5) Persecution Cases

Chen Shuangfei, age 32, was from Tongliang County, Pingtan Town, the Baihe District. He was unlawfully detained in a labor camp in October 2000.

Jiang Zaihong, age 35, was from the Shapingba District, Chongqing City and worked at the Changhang Company in Chongqing. He was detained in a labor camp from 2000 to 2001. In 2002 he was again sent to a labor camp for three years.

Cao Xianlu, age 49, was a mason from Bishan County. From 2001 to 2002, he was incarcerated in a labor camp. In 2003, he was sentenced to seven years in prison. The prison refused to accept him because of his injuries sustained from being beaten in detention.

Xiao Zeju, in his sixties was detained in a labor camp from 2000 to 2003.

Bai Tianshi, age 60, was a retired employee from the Wangjiang Factory. He was sent to a labor camp between 2000 and 2001.

Gu Liangjun, age 38, from Liangping County, was detained in a labor camp from 2000 to 2001.

Tan Hongyi, age 48, from Bishan County, was detained in a labor camp from 2000 to 2002.

Wei Xia, age 28, from the Yuzhong District, was detained in a labor camp from 2000 to 2001. In 2002, he was again arrested and sentenced.

Jin Tao, in his thirties, was a teacher.

Cheng Jianhua, around 40 years old, made a living selling fruit in Hechuan County. He was detained in a labor camp from 2000 to 2002.

Liu Youxin, age 32, from Yongchuan County. On March 15, 2005, local police officers once again arrested him.

Zhang Zhengwei, around age 23, from Dadukou County, Chongqing City, was persecuted in a labor camp from 2001 to February 2003. In 2002, when he was under severe stress from abuse and torment, he fell to the ground from the platform of the guard's office.

Chen Jiawu, age 28, from the Yubei District, was detained in a labor camp from 2000 to 2002. In 2004, he began a three-year term in the Xishanping Forced Labor Camp.

Wang Zhengrong was from Jianglu City. At the end of 2001, he was beaten severely three times and was sent to a hospital.

Yang Bin, age 31, was a doctor of the surgical department in the Western Suburban Hospital in Chongqing. In August 2000, while he looked after another practitioner's home, he was monitored and arrested. He stayed in a labor camp for one year, plus eight months beyond the term. At the beginning of November 2003, Yang Bin went back to Suining City from Chongqing. Police abducted him at his temporary dwelling, together with another person named Li Guangjing (female, over 40 years old). The police had been waiting for him. In 2004, Yang Bin was illegally sentenced to nine years in prison. Now he is serving his time in the Deyang Prison in Sichuan Province.

Zhang Ping, age 38, a teacher from Liangping County, was detained in a labor camp from 2001 to 2003.

Zeng Guozhi, age 65, from the Shapingba District, was detained in a labor camp from 2001 to 2003.

Yuan Yugang, age 32, was from the Yuzhong District. He served in the military before working in Chongqing City's electricity sector. Yuan Yugang was detained in a labor camp from 2000 to 2002.

4. Tortured to the Brink of Death

When I was in the Strictly Controlled Team, Zeng Zhiping from Tongnan County asked me, "Oh! how did you come to look like this?" I said, "Zhang Liang sent me to a labor camp. Policemen and convicts in the Xishanping Labor Camp abused and brutalized me. My condition is proof." Zeng Zhiping looked surprised. When I was sent back to Tongnan County, Zeng said, "You stay here for several days, then you can go home." But I was delivered to a custodial center and detained there. Liu Yong came to visit. When he saw me he said, "How come you look so old?" On the morning of March 5, I began a hunger strike. Vicious officers said, "As soon as you eat and write a guarantee statement, you can go home."

There were practitioners who didn't write the guarantee statement during his or her stay in the labor camp between year 2001 and 2002. When they were released from the labor camp, they would be detained in a brainwashing class or custodial center for an unlimited term. The authorities tried to force them to write a guarantee statement. If they couldn't get a "not practicing Falun Gong" statement, they would insist that the practitioners write statements about not going to Beijing [to appeal for Falun Gong] and not distributing truth-clarifying materials, or they would order practitioners' family members to write the statements on their behalf. The Tongnan County brainwashing classes ran many times, off and on, from September 2000 to 2004.

On March 12, 2002, the 8^th day of my hunger strike, perpetrators from the 610 Office brought three female doctors from the county hospital to force-feed me. Li Nongyun and Liu Yongjian from the 610 Office, Mr. Liu from the custodial center and two other officers held me down on a bench. Three doctors inserted the feeding tube into my nose. They force-fed me with a large amount of liquid food. After the force-feeding, I felt dizzy, had chest pain, and was extremely nauseous.

The clinic section of the county hospital has always participated in the force-feeding and injection of Falun Gong practitioners. Liu Guanghai (clinic section) was a permanent prison doctor who participated in force-feeding Zhang Hua, Wu Yongmei, and others. When other doctors came to do these tasks, he would make the arrangements. One of the county hospital officials, Zhang Daiyou, was Zhang Liang's (the National Security Team leader) older brother.

My condition continued to worsen and my weight dropped. On the 16^th of March, Li Nongyun, Liu Yongjian, Deng Guoxin, Mr. Liu and others, seven or eight people, held me down on a chair. They ordered three doctors (female and male) to force-fed me. They inserted the tube into my trachea three times. They pulled the tube out and stuck it in repeatedly, two or three times. I was unable to breathe. The pain was unbearable and I almost suffocated. My body went into convulsions. I was at the brink of death. On of the vicious doctors said, "Oh, you even want to jump up?" They pushed me down harder.

On the 18^th I started to vomit blood. My cellmate called for the guards. Liu Yong called the 610 Office. On the 19^th, officials from the 610 Office brought three doctors. They measured my blood pressure and then left. On the afternoon of the 20^th, perpetrators dragged me to the county hospital against my will. I was put into the Internal Medicine Inpatient Care Center and was given an injection. Later, Cai Pin (from the 610 Office) and another five or six people came to the hospital. They were afraid of taking any responsibility for my death and told Zeng Zhiping, Liu Yongjian and another guard to send me home. At that time my body was nothing but skin and bones.

5. Becoming Homeless; Separated from My Four-year-old Daughter

After I went back home on March 20, 2002, and was recovering from the persecution, policemen Li Hengyi, Luo Yonghong, Zeng Zhiping, and Zhou Nanmin often came to my home to harass me.

Nearly a year passed. One day, my mother and mother-in-law went to a grocery market and were arrested by Zhang Liang (from the National Security Team), Li Hengyi (policeman), and others. Li Hengyi struck my mother-in-law on the head in front of the public in the market. Later, they took them to the Tongnan Police Department. My mother-in-law underwent a hunger strike in protest of their unlawful arrest. They force-fed her. When the feeding tube was pulled out, it was covered in blood. She vomited blood for many days afterward. They detained her for over 40 days. When she was released, Zhang Liang produced a fifteen-day detention card; he had left the dates blank.

In the beginning of October 2003, the County Head, Wei Shouming, gave a speech in a meeting, "Tighten Control on Falun Gong." On October 13, Li Hengyi and Luo Yonghong (policemen from the National Security Team), ignoring the law, came to my residence and searched my home. They took a copy of the book Zhuan Falun and also attempted to arrest me and my wife, Wu Yongmei, and take us to the Tianyuanhua brainwashing class. But at that time only my mother (Fu Ruxian) and my mother-in-law (Fu Ruhuan) were at home, so their plan didn't succeed.

From then, on I chose to leave home to avoid illegal arrest. I was apart from my family and my daughter. On December 23, 2003 my wife, Wu Yongmei, was arrested. One week later the police took away my four-year-old daughter Zhang Yuanyuan. My wife went on a hunger strike to protest. After more than fifty days of detention, she walked out of there. She had to go into exile as well. The authorities didn't release my daughter until half a year later, when my family demanded her return. My daughter hasn't seen her parents since. Relatives are now taking care of her. She's suffered a lot of trauma at a very young age. On the sensitive dates the perpetrators come to harass my family and attempt to arrest us.

My mother-in-law suffered severe mental trauma from the persecution . She has become afraid of strangers. Her memory is almost gone. My mother, Fu Ruxian, also suffered severely from the persecution. Her condition prohibited her from leaving Xinjiang Province to go to her hometown, Tongnan County. My fifth aunt, Fu Rufen, has been homeless for many years to avoid persecution and arrest. Her son is now in college, but she is unable to be there for him. Her son also lost financial resources after she was gone. After my sixth aunt walked out of a labor camp in October 2001, Zhang Liang arrested her for the fourth time. They didn't release her until she was tortured to the brink of death.

Appendix: A list of persecutors in the Xishanping and Tongnan Forced Labor Camps

(1) The persecutors in the Xishanping Forced Labor Camp

Zhang Bojun: prisoners' group leader, over 30 years old, resident in the Beibei District, Chongqing City. He colluded with police officers to beat people and extort money from them. The previous group leader was Xia Xianke (a criminal drug addict, about 40 years old), resident of Tongnan, retired. In late 2002, when he was once again sentenced to forced labor, he was selected to be part of the severe surveillance team in the Education Division to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. It was said that his mother worked in a procuratorate in Chengdu City.

Chu Ming: criminal drug addict, over 20 years old, resident of Shapingba, Chongqing City. It was said that he died of an incurable disease in the forced labor camp.

Chen Gangquan: guard, over 40 years old, very brutal

Liu Song: criminal, male, over 30 years old, was sentenced to 7 years in prison. He was from Chongqing City

Xu Guangfu: dead of No. 11 Team, over 40 years old

Lei Kejin: deputy head of the No. 11 Team, over 30 years old. He was shifted to the No. 7 Division to specifically persecute Falun Gong. In 2002, he was promoted to head of the No. 2 Team in the No. 7 Division. He is still active in persecuting Falun Gong.

Liu Qidou: guard, in his sixties; he was adept at exploiting drug criminals to earn achievements points prior to his retirement. In early 2003, he was still in the Education Division.

Li Yong: a policeman, over 30 years old. He was awarded one of the "the ten best police officers" awards. As a reward he toured Hong Kong, where he learned that Falun Gong is practiced worldwide. Since 2002, he hasn't been seen to personally have used violence. In 2003, he was still in the Education Division.

Tian Xiaohai: in his 30s, before November 2000, he was in the No. 11 Team to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. After that he was appointed to deputy head of the Education Division. He was one of the major organizers of the persecution of practitioners in detention. In 2003, he was still in the Education Division.

Chen Jianping: guard, in his 20s, he was once a prison doctor and lived in Beibei. In May 2002 he was transferred to the No. 2 Team.

Tian Xin: former section chief of the Education Section, male, in his forties. In early 2002, he was appointed to head of the Education Division. He often drank excessively. He is currently still involved in the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.

Several criminals from the Farming Group: they used much physical strength while beating people.

Wu Tao: supply chief, female, in her thirties, lived in Beibei City. She embezzled money.

Gao Xiaohong: prison doctor, female, about 40 years old, very vicious.

Wang Zhaohui: guard, male, in his sixties, retired around 2003. In 2002, he was in the Less Disciplined Squad where he feigned kindness, but he was vicious in his heart. He made use of the criminal drug addicts to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. In February 2002, he used enticement of a three-month sentence reduction to incite criminal Wang Jun to scheme and attempt to "reform" practitioners. Practitioners Zhang Ping, Yuan Yugang, Zeng Guozhi and others were thus tortured and forced to write the Three Statements. This made an opening to force all the practitioners to write the "Three Statements." Wang Zhaohui only shortened criminal Wang Jun's sentence by one month, for which Wang has always been resentful.

Yan Rongzhi: criminal drug addict, about 30 years old, resident of Yongchun, Chongqing City. From 2002 to early 2003 he continually took part in the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in the Education Division.

Gao Ding: male, about 30 years old; officer in the No. 7 Division. He was once the office secretary in the Xishanping Forced Labor Camp. In early 2002 he was promoted to Division Head of the Maojiashan Women's Forced Labor Camp.

Li Zhongquan: guard, in his 50s, very cruel. Since 2001 he was in the Education Division. He was transferred out around 2003.

Sun Ping: guard, about 48 years old. In 2002, he was head of the No. 1 Team of the Education Division. He did not personally beat people, instead, he always ordered the drug addict criminals to torture practitioners. Because he was efficient in the persecution, in only a few months he was promoted to the head of the Farming Group.

Factory director surnamed Lu: male, over 30 years old, the former director of the packaging factory at the forced labor camp. In March and April 2002 he was in the Loosely Controlled Group. He stayed in the Education Division for a short time.

Huang Yong: guard, male, about 38 years old. In early 2002 he was in the Generally Controlled Group, the No. 1 Team. In May, he was transferred to the No. 2 Team and acted as the deputy head.

Wang Jing: guard, male, in his twenties. In early 2002 he was in the Generally Controlled Group, the No. 1 Team.

Xiao Xingming: Head of the Strictly Controlled Group and the driver for Long Shishun. In early 2003 he was promoted to the director of the packaging factory at the forced labor camp. He was in forties and very vicious. In late 2002 he called a movie team to play the slanderous film Abyss in the Education Division.

Wang Chen: guard in the Strictly Controlled Group, male, over 20 years old. He is still persecuting Falun Gong practitioners.

Zhou Benzhong: guard, male, in his fifties. After December 2001 he was specifically in charge of the Farming Group. He participated in the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.

Tu Deyu: political head of the Labor Re-education Bureau in Chongqing, in his fifties. He often came to the forced labor camp to supervise and advocate the persecution.

Long: director of the forced labor camp.

Long Shishun: deputy director of the Xishanping Forced Labor Camp and head of the Education Division, in his forties. He was often stationed in the Education Division. He was the mastermind of many persecution schemes. 86-13908319712 (Cell). His wife Xiang Xiuqing was an English teacher in the Chaoyang High School in the Beibei District, Chongqing.

Liu Hua: male, in his thirties, resident of Changshou County. He was team head from December 2001 to early 2002. Later, he was transferred to the Living Administration Section of the Xishanping Forced Labor Camp and acted as the section chief. He was very vicious, and personally beat practitioners.

Li Qiwei: guard from the Education Division, the Xishanping Forced Labor Camp, about 38 years old. He was once a history teacher in Beibei Chaoyang High School. He was in the Education Division since 2001. He was the head of No. 1 Team from June 2002 to 2003. He created the high-pressure atmosphere, ordered criminals to brutally persecute practitioners, and often read loudly books and newspapers that slandered Falun Gong. In late 2003 he was promoted to a position in the headquarters of the forced labor camp (specific position is unknown). Since he burned Falun Gong practitioners' clothes, his apartment once caught fire. His wife was Li Zongyuan, a teacher from Jianshan High School in the Beibei District. (2) Persecutors in Tongnan County

Li Hengyi: male officer from the Tongnan Police Department, about 40 years old. Since 1999 he has constantly persecuted Falun Gong practitioners.

Zeng Zhiping: male officer from a police station (Zhengxing Street) in Tongnan. He has participated in the persecution of the Falun Gong practitioners many times.

Zhong Ming: deputy No. 1 Section chief of the Tongnan Police Department, male, about 51 years old.

Zhang Liang: No.1 Section chief, the Tongnan Police Department, male, 40 years old. He was promoted due to his involvement in the persecution of Falun Gong and later became head of the State Security Team. Since 1999, he has kept on with the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. He personally arrested most of the practitioners in Tongnan. The practitioners were sent to forced labor camps or sentenced to prison. These actions were either carried out under his orders, or he compiled and reported them. To date, Zhang has sent 61 Falun Gong practitioners to forced labor camps.

It was said that after receiving bonuses for persecuting Falun Gong for several years, he was able to afford a house valued at several hundred thousand yuan.

Tongnan National Security Team was called the No. 1 Section of the Tongnan Police Department in 2000. The section chief then was Zhang Liang and the vice section chief was Zhong Ming (in his fifties). In early 2001 Zhong Ming retired; thus Zhang Liang allocated power to himself. He is now still doing evil in the persecution of Falun Gong.

Since 1999, the perpetrators at Changsha Women's Prison have used extremely inhumane methods to abuse and torture Falun Gong practitioners. The prison authorities organized a group that specializes in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. Li Chunhui, head of the group and guard Xue Fang divided the practitioners into three sections: Most Strictly Controlled Class, Strictly Controlled Class and Basic Class. All 19 Falun Gong practitioners sent to the Most Strictly Controlled Class were brutally tortured, even those over 70 years of age.

Group head Li Chunhui was especially cruel toward practitioners who remained in the Most Strictly Controlled Class throughout their incarceration. Practitioner Ms. Yan Hong from Changsha City refused to wear the prison uniform. She was detained in solitary confinement for three months in the heat of summer and was not allowed to take showers or change her clothes. She was forced to stand on the concrete ground that heats up to over 40⁰C [104⁰ F] during the day while shackled. The shackles weighed about 20 kg [44 lbs] and were especially made for use on Falun Gong practitioners. After Ms. Yan fainted, the perpetrators poured cold water on her to revive her. They continued to torture Ms. Yan after she came to. She was given only a small bowl of rice for each meal. In the evening she was shackled and locked in a solitary confinement cell, shrouded in stench and attacked by swarms of bugs and mosquitoes.

Practitioner Ms. Guo Boqin had been illegally held at a local detention center in Chenzhou before she was transferred to the Changsha Women's Prison and was already very weak as a result of mistreatment. She refused to memorize the prison rules, refused to say "report" when entering the office [as an inmate is required to do] and held a hunger strike to strongly protest the abuses against Falun Gong practitioners. The guards ordered inmates Zhang Li and Li Can to torture Ms. Guo. Guo Boqin was held in a solitary confinement cell for one month, after which her black hair turned white. When she shouted, "Falun Dafa is good!" Zhang Li and Li Can jabbed her mouth with a mop handle until blood gushed from her mouth. Zhang Li and Li Can have been abusing other practitioners as well.

An inmate found a slip of paper with the words "Teacher" and "scripture" in the hands of practitioner Mo Xiaoyan from Yueyang. Group head Li Chunhui immediately ordered six inmates to drag Mo Xiaoyan by her feet from the third floor to the first floor, which left numerous cuts and bruises on Mo Xiaoyan's head and back. She was carried into a car and sent to a mental hospital, where she was forced to undergo an examination. The doctor lied and claimed that Mo Xiaoyan had mental illness. Ms. Mo was held in a solitary confinement cell until her release.

Luo Aizhen, a 67-year-old practitioner from Yiyang refused to squat when ordered to and denied the false accusations that she was a criminal. Group head Li Chunhui forced her to do push-ups, frog jumps, forced her to run, do half squats and handstands for an extended period of time. Due to physical torture and mental torment, Luo Aizhen lost control of her bladder and bowel and her blood pressure rose to 280/140 mmHg.

Practitioners sent to the Most Strictly Controlled Class were never allowed to meet with their families. They are isolated from the outside world all year long and are deprived of their basic dignity. Among the 4,000 detainees at the prison, only Falun Gong practitioners are not allowed to take showers. The practitioners are assigned nearly four times as much work as the regular inmates. They have to knit nine mats or pick 29 kg [63 lbs] of beans each day, which takes more than 20 hours to complete. They are not allowed to sleep until they finish their assigned work.

Practitioner He Lijia from Changde suffered from rapidly declining vision due to chronic lack of sleep. She was forced to make nine mats each day in March, April and May. She worked for more than 20 days a month with only half an hour of sleep daily (from 5:30 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.). When there is no work, the practitioners in the Most Strictly Controlled Class are either forced to stand against a wall, or Li Chunhui would order special male police officers to put the practitioners through intensive physical training. Some practitioners have swelling from their feet to their backs, yet they are still not allowed to take a break in between new work assignments.

Li Chunhui would also trick a practitioner to come to the office, saying she wanted to "talk" with her. Two male officers waiting in the office would jump at the practitioner upon entering the room, hang the practitioner up and shock her with electric batons. If the practitioner refused to give up Falun Gong, they would send her to a solitary confinement cell to further torture her. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) promoted Li Chunhui to deputy head of the Education Section a reward for her display of cruelty.

What is listed above represents only the tip of the iceberg of the atrocities at the prison. Countless cases of gross abuse have taken place at Changsha Women's Prison during the past six years of persecution.

Practitioner Chen Chujun suffered complete memory loss and muscular atrophy and can no longer walk normally.
Practitioner Jia Cuiying passed away less than 20 days after her release.
Practitioner Zhou Yunxia had a mental breakdown lasting for over six months, yet the perpetrators still refuse to release her.

1. [Henan Province] Practitioner Mr. Dong Hongqiang Tortured in Prison and Sustains Incurable Diseases

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Dong Hongqiang, 40 years old, is a farmer from Xichang Village, Chengguan Town, Yinchuan County, Henan Province. In May 1996 he started to practice Falun Gong for fitness. After July 20, 1999, personnel from the County 610 Office and the Political and Security Section from the County Police Department arrested Mr. Dong several times and sentenced him to three and a half years of imprisonment. During his imprisonment he was inhumanly tortured. He suffered a mental collapse and ascites resulting from liver dysfunction. Eventually he was tortured to the brink of death and diagnosed with incurable disease. On August 4, 2005, the police had his family take him home and put Mr. Dong under house arrest.

2. [Jidong County, Heilongjiang Province] Practitioner Mr. Cao Yajun Tortured to the Point of Illness

During the afternoon of March 15, 2005, personnel from the Jixi City Police Department arrested 40-year-old practitioner Mr. Cao Yajun from Jidong County, Heilongjiang Province. Police interrogated him under torture and also tied him to a metal chair for three days. They did not allow him to eat, use the bathroom, or go to sleep. Though they maltreated him in this way, they still did not get any information from him, so they fabricated evidence and sentenced Mr. Cao to two years of forced labor.

After being put into the labor camp, Mr. Cao had symptoms of hypertension. His blood pressure reached 240, so his family requested his release from the labor camp. The labor camp authorities reported the case to the Jixi City Judiciary Bureau, but the bureau denied his release. At present, Mr. Cao has heart disease and the hospital doctors say his life is in danger. The doctors suggested that Mr. Cao be released on bail for hospitalization.

3. [Shenyang City, Liaoning Province] Reports about Four of the Eight Practitioners Arrested at Shenyang City Agriculture University

Because of the family's initiative and efforts, practitioner Ms. Bo has been released from the Luotai Mountain Resort Brainwashing Center.

Ms. Kong Fanzhen is still being held at the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp.

Li Yourong is being held at Fushun City Forced Labor Camp.

Practitioner Ms. Kong Fanyan was refused admission to a detention center because of her hypertension and heart disease. They sent her home. Personnel in Fushun County Police Department and Hou'an Town Police Station still secretly sentenced Ms. Kong to three years of forced labor and attempted to put her into the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp. The police often harass her family.

4. [Sichuan Province] Ms. Yuan Yuju and Mr. Liang Jinhui, Mother and Brother of NTDTV Reporter, Still Detained

On July 19, 2005, authorities from Luzhou City arrested Ms. Yuan Yuju and Mr. Liang Jinhui, the mother and brother of American citizen and NTDTV Hong Kong reporter Liang Zhen. They were arrested only because they practice Falun Gong. On August 17, Ms. Yuan Yuju was sentenced to one year of forced labor. The authorities originally planned to send her to the Zizhong City Nanmusi Forced Labor Camp. Due to overseas rescue efforts, the pressure of public opinion, and intervention from the U.S. Consulate, they temporarily sent Ms. Yuan to the Jiangyang District Detention Center in Luzhou City. Liang Zhen's brother Mr. Liang Jinhui is still under criminal detention at Luzhou City Detention Center. His situation is unknown.

On August 19, 2005, personnel from the Sichuan Province Police Department replied for the first time to a U.S. Consulate inquiry and confirmed that the two practitioners had been detained by the Luzhou City Police Department. The officials stated that the case was under investigation.

On August 21, Liang Zhen's father was allowed to visit her mother for the first time. Liang Zhen's father said that his wife, Yuan Yuju, had lost some weight and had more gray hair, but that her overall health was okay. Watched by prison guards, they only talked about some domestic trivia for about ten minutes. The mother was most worried about her son's situation in prison and felt sad when she found out that nobody has been allowed to visit him yet.

5. [Dashiqiao City, Liaoning Province] Ms. Li Yazhen Abducted in Harbin City

On July 5, 2005, practitioner Ms. Li Yazhen from Dashiqiao City went back to her hometown in Heilongjiang Province to visit her family and relatives. On July 11, on her way back to Dashiqiao City, police searched her bag at the station and found her MP3 player. Police then arrested and held Ms. Li at the Railway Hospice. They are planning to sentence her to forced labor.

6. [Shenyang City, Liaoning Province] Police Arrest Ms. Gao Huijie

Practitioner Ms. Gao Huijie from Shenyang City is 40 years old. On August 22, 2005, a group of people speaking with Beijing accents arrested her at the typewriting center she owns. They took Ms. Gao to the nearby Chongshan Police Station. They ransacked her typewriting center and her home and confiscated five notebook computers, a desktop computer, and other valuables. Ms. Gao is unaware that her possessions have been confiscated

7. [Langfang City, Hebei Province] Senior Engineer Ms. Li Chunying Sentenced to Forced Labor

On August 10, 2005, practitioner Ms. Li Chunying, a senior engineer employed at the Langfang City Piping Science Research Institute, went three times to look for the leaders of the institute to ask them to let her return to work, in accordance with a document issued in 2003. (Note: She was fired in 1999 only because she browsed the Internet and went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong.) Xue Zhenkui, the director of the institute, and the other leaders not only didn't let her resume her work but also collaborated with personnel from the Guangyang District Police Department and sent Ms. Li to the Women's Division of the Kaiping Forced Labor Camp in Tangshan City on August 15. They did not go through any legal procedures or notify her family members.

8. [Anshan City, Liaoning Province] Mr. Xin Rihui Arrested for Distributing Truth-Clarifying Materials

At around 3:00 a.m. on May 29, 2005, personnel from the Tiedong Police Department arrested practitioner Xin Rihui from the Lishan District in Anshan City while he was distributing truth-clarifying materials in the Duilu Jianshen Street residential area. Mr. Xin is still being held at Anshan City's No. 1 Detention Center.

9. [Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region] Zou Kewen's Three Children Describe Their Father's Persecution

We are three young Falun Gong practitioners. In 1998 we started practicing Falun Gong together with our parents. We practiced diligently and steadily. But after the persecution began on July 20, 1999, police ransacked our home several times and often monitored and threatened us. Our father, Zou Kewen, was sentenced to five years of imprisonment. Mother and the three of us have consequently had a difficult life. In 2004 our father's prison term was up and he was released. Even though our family had not been together for a year, on August 9, 2005, personnel from the "610 Office" in Wulumuqi City and the Shuimogou District, as well as local police station officials sent our father to the Legislature Education Class at the Hygienic Institute in Banfanggou Township to brainwash him. Our mother chose to leave home to avoid persecution. We went to the brainwashing class, clarified the truth to them, and asked for our father, but they deceived us. They even ordered more than 20 police officers to push, drag or beat us. We were hurt. They took us to a police station against our will. At present, government personnel often harass and threaten us.

10. [Jiaozhou City, Shandong Province] Gao Siping and Gao Ruifen Arrested

At around 10:00 a.m. on August 18, 2005, personnel from the Jiaozhou City 610 Office colluded with more than 10 officers from the Nandu Village Police Station and broke into practitioner Ms. Gao Ruifen's home at Nandu Village. They arrested Ms. Gao and another practitioner named Gao Siping. Their arrests are a direct result of monitored phone conversations between practitioners.

11. [Baoding City, Hebei Province] Personnel from the City National Security Bureau Arrest Three Practitioners

At around 8:30 a.m. on August 7, 2005, as soon as practitioner Ms. Song Wenjun from Mancheng County, Baoding City, opened the door to go out to buy breakfast, a group of plainclothes officers, who were waiting outside, pushed her back in. Without showing any identification, they broke the windows in the room and confiscated a laptop computer, some CDs, and Falun Gong truth-clarifying materials. They took Ms. Song Wenjun and a young practitioner named Ms. Du to the City National Security Bureau.

At around 6:00 a.m. that same day, policemen headed by Zhang Changlin arrested practitioner Mr. Wei Haiwu from Mancheng County. Detailed information is not available.

These three practitioners' whereabouts remain unknown.

12. [Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region] Ms. Gao Shuqin Abducted and Taken to the City Brainwashing Class

At around 10:40 a.m. on August 19, 2005, Shen Xiping from Chifeng City's Pingzhuang Xilutian Mine Police Station in the Inner Mongolia AR led Liu Weimin and five officers from the National Security Team from the Yuanbaoshan Police Station, all in plainclothes, and broke into practitioner Ms. Gao Shuqin's bakery shop. They took Ms. Gao under force and put her into a car. Afterwards, Gao Shuqin's brother and husband went to the National Security Team at the Yuanbaoshan Police Station to request her release. After talking with Liu Weimin, they found out that Ms. Gao had been sent to the Chifeng City Brainwashing Class.

13. [Gaoling Town, Shandong Province] Six Practitioners from Xiayu Village Arrested in One Night

During the evening of August 15, 2005, personnel from the Gaoling Town Police Station in the Muping District, let by local public safety team members, ransacked the homes of practitioners Sun Houqi and Sun Houzhu in Xiayu Village. They arrested six practitioners including Sun Houlian, Sun Houxuan, Sun Xuejin, Mr. Wang Dejiang, Sun Houqi and the Wang Chunxiang couple.

During the arrest, Mr. Wang Dejiang escaped. But when the police ran after him, they shouted to the crowd, "Catch the thief!" Villagers who did not know the truth believed the police and prevented Mr. Wang from leaving. The police then brutally beat Mr. Wang into a coma. According to witnesses, a wooden bench used to beat him was broken into pieces. It was said that Mr. Wang was sent to a hospital for emergency treatment due to the severe injuries, but his family and friends didn't find him in the hospital.

Sun Houlian and Sun Houxuan were sent to Muping District Detention Center. Sun Xuejin and Sun Houqi and the Wang Chunxiang couple, in their 60s, were first taken to a brainwashing class run by the 610 Office near the Muping District Committee Party School. Their families went to visit but were told they had already been transferred elsewhere. Their current whereabouts are unknown.

At 11:00 a.m. on August 22, 2005, 610 Office personnel from the Jiuquan City National Security Team arrested practitioner Ms. Liu Suping, in her 50s, from Jiuquan City, and confiscated some truth-clarifying materials.

15. [Wuhan City, Hubei Province] Ms. Yang Yongzhen Arrested and Taken to the City's Kanjiaji Brainwashing Class

At around 9:00 a.m. on August 10, 2005, about seven officers from the Laodong Street Community Office and from the Jiang'an District 610 Office arrived in two cars at practitioner Ms. Yang Yongzhen 's home. At 12:00 a.m., Ms. Yang was arrested and taken to Wuhan City's Kanjiaji Brainwashing Class.

16. [Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province] Police Arrest Ms. Gao Huanlian for Distributing Truth-Clarifying Materials

During the morning of August 20, 2005, a security guard reported 46-year-old practitioner Ms. Gao Huanlian from the Tianhe District of Guangzhou City when she was distributing truth-clarifying materials. The police arrested her that same morning and ransacked her home. At present, Ms. Gao is being held at the Tianhe District Detention Center.

17. [Jiamusi City, Heilongjiang Province] Ms. Liu Yanqin Arrested for Having Truth-Clarifying CDs in Her Possession

On August 15, 2005, 65-year-old practitioner Ms. Liu Yanqin from Jiamusi City went to visit friends. At the Jiamusi City Railway Station she was found to have truth-clarifying CDs, and the Railway Police Station arrested her. The police also ransacked Ms. Liu's home that same day. Ms. Liu is currently being held at the Railway Detention Center.
