"I now realize how sinister they were to have fooled me with smiles on their faces. If they had treated me harshly, I could have remained clearheaded. But whenever they approached me, they always kept a beaming smile, yet the tricks they used were the most wicked. Invariably, they do everything they can to find out your concerns. When they see that you are concerned about your father, they try to achieve their evil goal by taking advantage of that sensitive point..." This is how Wang Bo described the deception, brainwashing, and manipulation she suffered at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Wang Bo
Wang Bo and her once-estranged parents regained happiness after they began practicing Falun Gong in 1996. In 1999, eighteen-year-old Ms. Wang was enrolled in China's Central Academy of Music. The same year, China's persecution of Falun Gong started, and Wang Bo and her family lost their freedom because they refused to give up their faith and spoke out for Falun Gong.
At the end of 2000, Wang Bo was illegally sentenced to forced labor for clarifying the truth about Falun Gong, and in early 2001, she was transferred from Shijiazhuang Forced Labor Camp to Xin'an Forced Labor Camp in Beijing, where she was deprived of sleep for days on end. Later, she was held and forced to undergo brainwashing at the Provincial Center for Legal Education in Hebei. On April 8, 2002, abusing the young woman's innocence and honesty, the talk show In Focus from China's Central Television Station (CCTV) broadcast a fabricated program about Wang Bo and her family, and the CCP's other media outlets, including the Xinhua News Agency, hyped it up with additional lies. During the three years during which Wang Bo was allowed to attend college, the 610 Office designated a female police officer to "accompany" Wang and keep her under constant surveillance.
The following is a transcript of Wang Bo's recount of how she was deceived, brainwashed, and used by the CCP.
Greetings, citizens of the world!
My name is Wang Bo and I am a Falun Gong practitioner from mainland China. I appeared on CCTV's In Focus in 2002, because I was deceived and used by the Chinese communist regime. Here I want to apologize to Master Li Hongzhi, and tell all the people in the world who have been misled how officials from the CCP tricked me, used me, and brainwashed me.
I was introduced to Falun Gong in 1996 when I was a senior in high school. At the time I seldom did the exercises or studied the Fa, as I was busy preparing for my college entrance exam. When I finished taking the exam in 1999 and was about to take the practice more seriously, the Chinese government started its frenzied attack on Falun Gong. At the end of 2000, I went to Tiananmen Square to clarify the truth by unfurling a banner and telling the public that Falun Gong is a righteous practice. Because I spoke the truth, I was sentenced to a three-year term of forced labor.
I Was the First One to Be Taken Out of the Van
The CCP was holding its annual sessions of the People's Congress and the Political Consultative Congress in early 2000. As Falun Gong practitioners, we wanted to submit a co-signed letter to the people's representatives, hoping they'd discuss the Falun Gong issue, get to know us better, and rescind a range of unfair policies enacted against Falun Gong. I went to make copies of the letter, but we didn't know that our phones had been tapped and we were being followed wherever we went. We never even thought about it. I was arrested while I was making copies, and they took me to the Qingling Street Police Station. Later, I learned that they had picked up my parents, too, as well as some other Falun Gong practitioners.
They kept me separated from other practitioners at the Qingling Street Police Station. It was cold, and they cuffed me to the stair rails in the police yard. They let me stand there for a whole day, with my hands cuffed to the rails on both sides of the stairs. It was not until around midnight that they led me into a room, where the police chief began to interrogate me. "You must tell us where you got this." he barked. I told him that I didn't want more Falun Gong practitioners to get persecuted. Furious, he jumped to his feet and walked over to me. He began to punch me in the face, causing my head to hit a container behind me. Frustrated by my refusal to talk, he dragged me out of the room and cuffed me to the stair rails again. I was left there, cuffed, for three more days before they released me. They also took 200 yuan that I had with me.
The police also savagely beat my father and many others in the station. They were so ferocious that they broke the sticks they used to beat them with.
On December 5, 2000, another Falun Gong practitioner and I planned to unfurl a long banner in Tiananmen Square. There were many people in the square on that day, but they looked more like plainclothes police than tourists. We began to hear and see a commotion not long after we entered the square. As we approached the monument and took out the banner, plainclothes police officers rushed over and grabbed the banner from us. Meanwhile, they punched and kicked us viciously. As a result, the stems of my glasses broke and I sustained bruises on my hands. They furiously dragged us toward the police van and kicked us in, not forgetting to add a punch. The van, packed with Falun Gong practitioners, took us to the Tiananmen Police Station.
Once we arrived, I saw a boy about my age, whose mouth and nose were both bleeding. As more and more Falun Gong practitioners were arrested and brought in, they started sending us to different places in police vans. I was taken to Huangshan District along with many other practitioners. We didn't know whether it was Huanshan's police station or detention center that we were driven to. What we knew was, as our van entered a big yard, we saw an office building and many police officers in the yard. When the van stopped, the officers began to look into the van. After they spotted me, one officer shouted, "Bring down the girl first. She'll be easy to deal with."
They brought me down first and took me into a room in a three-story building. They wanted to know where I was from and planned to send me back. But I refused to tell them because I didn't want my school and the local authorities to face pressure. I didn't want the local law enforcement officials to get involved in the persecution either. Besides, if I told them, I'd be kept under police custody and possibly be sent to a labor camp.
So, they kept interrogating me until one o'clock in the morning. I heard a woman's piercing scream coming from a room near mine, and I knew that they were torturing Falun Gong practitioners. I still refused to talk, so another officer came in and took me away. As I was led into the corridor and arrived at another room, I saw a Falun Gong practitioner who was about forty years old and short. A fierce-looking, intimidating officer stood by her side. Caked blood was visible in the corner of her still bleeding mouth and standing beside patches of blood-stained water, she smiled at me.
I heard the fierce-looking officer say, "Why didn't you tell us earlier? You would've avoided a lot of suffering." With those words, he led her out of the room and took me in.
He forced me to squat and tied my left wrist to one of the legs on the chair, so I wouldn't be able to stand up. The officer stayed close to me and said, "Look, little girl, it's so late now. Just tell us where your home is. I really don't want to shock you with electricity." He then used his electric baton to shock my right hand.
This officer left a clear memory in my mind with his rugged features and wide face. He saw that I was not afraid, so he said, "Aren't you afraid" as he went to bolt the door. He then placed his electric baton in a charger on the table and said he would shock me with it when it was fully charged. After that, he sat across from me and said as he held my hands, "Tell us, little girl. You see, it's already so late." I pulled my hands back and he held them again, and it went on like this for a while.
Later into the night I became afraid, so I told him that I came from Shijiazhuang. They then asked the Shijiazhuang Office in Beijing to take me back.

2. Torture -- the First Systematic Top-down Arrangement
In early 2001, at Shijiazhuang Forced Labor Camp, we practitioners did the Falun Gong exercises as a group. The guards thought that I had organized the activity. They didn't treat me the same way they did other practitioners. The others were subjected to physical and verbal abuse, and handcuffed at will. They faked kindness towards me. Zhang, the head of Hebei Province Judicial Bureau visited me at the labor camp. They wanted to make me feel their "kindness." They made systematic arrangements from the top down in an effort to entrap me and further use me. This form of persecution is quite shameless, because while they lull you into trusting them, they persecute you. You are unaware of their true intention, and eventually they'll put you in a position where you feel better off dead than alive.
The camp guards tried to "reform" me the whole time, but they couldn't convince me. Later I learned about the "self-immolation incident" in Tiananmen Square. In the time that followed, reporters from Xinhua News Agency came to the Shijiazhuang Forced Labor Camp twice to interview Falun Gong practitioners, including me. They focused on me and hoped they could brainwash me and fabricate news to deceive the public.
On April 3, 2001 they put me in a car and drove to the Xinan Forced Labor Camp. They lied and told me that I was going to see an exhibit. By the time they took me to the "psychiatric counseling room" at that camp I still had no idea what they wanted from me. I heard the word "reform" for the first time when they forced me to wear a prisoner's uniform. They talked to me around the clock and would not let me sleep. I was extremely drowsy and could barely open my eyes. They didn't want me to sleep, so they forced me to stand up. They also forced me to squat in a corner without moving.
When I was semi-conscious and groggy from lack of sleep they forced me to wear the prison uniform. When I came to my right mind, I tried to take it off. The guards made me sit in a chair, and they handcuffed me to a rung on the chair that was between the two front legs of the chair and a few inches off the ground. After they handcuffed me this way, my hands were almost touching the ground, and my upper body was lying on top of my thighs. After a while my hands turned black and were badly swollen. When it came time for them to un-cuff me, they could not do it because the handcuffs had cut deeply into my swollen wrists. In the afternoon of the sixth day my mind was a blur. I was so drowsy that I could not think straight. I felt nauseous and I wanted to do nothing but sleep.
3. Manipulation of the Good Side of Human Nature - the Second Top-down Systematic Arrangement
I was muddle-headed from sleep deprivation and from their lies. At that time, I thought a practitioner should unconditionally look inward, rather than at them. The labor camp guards took advantage of this, and I went astray.
On April 8 when I was taken back to the Shijiazhuang Forced Labor Camp, I saw that the whole labor camp had changed and the highly intense atmosphere was gone. In fact, this was part of their deceptive scheme to target me, planned by high level officials and implemented at the camp. Labor camp head Zhao Yinong said to me in the car on the way to the Shijiazhuang Forced Labor Camp, "The labor camp is completely different now." I was so naïve, I believed him. When I walked through the camp gate, I was welcomed with such pomp and fanfare, it made me think they were welcoming a government inspector. I was muddle-headed enough to believe them.
All of the camp's detainees had been relocated. I was sent to Group 304, where I saw almost none of the Falun Gong practitioners I knew before. They didn't want me to come into contact with practitioners I was acquainted with. They let me see that all practitioners were wearing the prison uniforms we had refused to wear before (despite the labor camp officials' coercion on numerous occasions).
I thought it was strange. Once, a practitioner told me in private, "Do you know that probably the next day after they sent you to Beijing, the guards took all Falun Gong practitioners to the cafeteria downstairs in several groups. They piled prison uniforms on the table and asked each practitioner whether he would wear it. Those who said no were immediately taken aside and savagely beaten with electric batons and rubber clubs until the practitioners reached their physical limit and compromised."
More than one month later, when we were taking a shower, I saw many practitioners' buttocks and thighs were all black. Many of them could not lie on their backs at night and instead had to lie on their stomachs while sleeping. I felt terrible. I couldn't believe they didn't even spare older people in their 70s.
I felt awful because I thought I had betrayed Falun Gong. I was not with these practitioners when they were enduring such tremendous abuse under the persecution. I said to them, "I feel very bad when I see you. I know all of you have suffered a great deal. I don't know if I made the right choice. I hope you can talk to me if you want and help me." The guards heard me and stopped me.
What I had not known and I had never thought of was that the people whom I now lived with had all been "transformed." The guards purposely arranged for them to live with me. I had always held an attitude of trusting everyone. I had been brainwashed to the extent that I could not tell right from wrong. Some guards were superficially kind to us, so I completely let my guard down and shared with them whatever doubts or confusions I had. Afterwards, I was brainwashed day after day and had the so-called "talk" day after day. I would never have thought that everything had been meticulously premeditated in an effort to target a single person - me. Later, when I was asked to answer the questions on a piece of paper, I was unwilling to answer their questions. When they asked, "Who is Master Li Hongzhi?" I said, "I don't want to directly answer this question." They knew that I was not completely reformed, so they spared no effort to continue brainwashing me.
I felt the great pressure and my mind became more and more muddled. Only now do I realize that physical torment and abuse is not enough to make someone give up his belief. The suffering from the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) non-stop brainwashing and sleep deprivation can wear down and destroy your will.
Many practitioners who refused to give up practice under cruel treatment in other places were deceived at this labor camp. During the long, drawn-out detention at this camp we grew increasingly muddle-headed. They basically didn't give us any time to think and completely filled up our daily schedules. They feared that we might reflect and share our understanding of Falun Gong with other practitioners. They simply wanted to completely put our minds in this condition in order to solidify the brainwashing result.
The guards later asked me whether I wanted to go back to school. I knew they were actually trying to earn promotions by using me as a pawn. I said, "I don't want to go back to school." They didn't give up and continued brainwashing me. I felt conflicts, "I still have to practice Falun Gong! I can't let people think that I don't do anything and don't go to school." In the end I said, "If I can go back to school, I'll cherish the opportunity."
I knew they wanted to present me as a role model and the fruit of their reform work. I didn't want them to use me, but I had no freedom inside the labor camp. I longed to get out. The "school" they sent me too, however, was nothing other than a brainwashing "class."
4. CCTV Lies in its "Focal Point" Program
In November 2000 they told me that I was being released early, but in fact they sent me to the Hebei Province Legal Education Training Center, which is in fact a brainwashing class. They wanted me to work as a "collaborator" and help them brainwash other Falun Gong practitioners. I thought I was walking on the right path, so I went to the center.
Overtly I had freedom at the brainwashing class, but in reality I became mired in even greater lies and deception. Everything that happened there was carefully designed. They made plans to zero in on each individual practitioner, how to deceive the practitioners according to their individual circumstances. They have different ways to target your weakness and to persecute you. They talked to me about my father. They said, "We know that your father is doing big things out there. If he gets arrested, he'll receive a prison term for sure." They then told me, "So-and-so was just sent to a labor camp." They often insinuated that my father was in danger and made me worry about my father. They also pretended to know my father's whereabouts and his activities and said, "[We know it all], it's just that we don't want to arrest him right now. We only hope you can do something." I was muddle-headed at the time and I didn't want my father to suffer any longer. They lied to me and said, "The sooner your father comes to his senses the better off he will be." I believed them and cooperated to arrest my father.
I regretted my decision terribly after my father was arrested. From any perspective, I should not have lured my father to the brainwashing center. I thought at the time, "Right now people don't understand me, but my father will probably understand later on." But I was wrong!
In late March 2002, the head of the brainwashing class suddenly told me that four major media would come to interview me the next day. I was caught off guard and talked to my father about it. He felt it was quite bizarre. The following day, people from Focal Point Interview TV program, People's Daily and Xinhua News Agency came to interview me. I was really afraid.
Li Yinqiang, the reporter from Focal Point Interview did most of the talking. At first he chatted with me and said, "The government made a wrong initial decision of suppressing Falun Gong, they turned so many people to the opposite side. How is this going to end? This decision itself is irrational." Then he changed his tone and said, "I hope these Falun Gong practitioners will come to their senses." Maybe these were his true thoughts, maybe he had ulterior motives, but he indeed succeeded to confuse me. I really thought I was clarifying the truth to the public and I truly believed the reporters. I thought as a reporter and a media, respecting facts is the most important thing. My father and mother had the same thoughts. Through us, we hoped to let the public know that the people who practice Falun Gong are not irrational and would never commit suicide through self-immolation or any other means. This is why we agreed to accept his interview.
The interview lasted about three hours, but the aired Focal Point Interview was very short. Although some words were from me, they quoted them out of context. They were not truly what I wanted to say. Right after the program was broadcast, Li Yinqiang phoned me at the brainwashing class from Beijing. He said, "I was afraid you might not be satisfied with this. You also know that some content was censored. This is due to political need. I hope you are not angry."
I want to mention in particular that an article published in People's Daily contained some very venomous words that are absolutely not what I said. I would never say such vicious words from my mouth. My father and I were indignant after reading the article, because we never imagined the largest newspaper in China would make such bold-faced lies. They wanted to cut off the path for me to return to Falun Gong practice. I never said those words but I did accept the interview, therefore I must take responsibility.
Because of these fabricated reports, I couldn't bear to face other practitioners. I think the reporters are so debased that they would do anything to achieve their goals, completely discarding ethics. My father and I both knew then that this was a trap, and they took advantage of us nonetheless.
[To be continued]
In mid-January of 2006, Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Liu Lihua was in critical condition in the Liaoning Province Women's Prison. Her family was advised to bail her out "for medical treatment," but she passed away on January 27. The details are still under investigation. Ms. Wang Xiuxia, 41, was also persecuted into critical condition at Liaoning Province Women's Prison. She passed away on January 24 after being released.
Ms. Liu Lihua, 61, was a Falun Gong practitioner in Zhuanghe City, Liaoning Province. She began practicing Falun Gong in early 1996. She was illegally arrested several times after the CCP began its frenzied persecution of Falun Gong in 1999. On September 4, 1999, more than 30 practitioners, including Ms. Liu, were arrested while attending an experience sharing conference in Zhuanghe City. Ms. Liu was detained for 48 days.
In June 2000, Ms. Liu was arrested again from her home. She was illegally sentenced to three years in a forced labor camp. She was persecuted in Masanjia Forced Labor Camp in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province until her release in March 2001.
In July 2001, Ms. Liu went to Beijing to clarify the facts about Falun Gong. After she returned, Xingda Police Station in Zhuanghe City arrested her while she was distributing truth-clarifying flyers. She was illegally sentenced to seven years of imprisonment. She suffered brutal persecution for nearly five years in Liaoning Province Women's Prison (formerly called the Dabei Prison of Shenyang City, now named the Shenyang Prison).
On around January 16, 2006, the prison staff advised her family to bail her out "for medical treatment," however, they would not allow her family to take her back to her own home. Ms. Liu Liuhua was brought to her son's home in Dalian City, where she passed away on January 27, 2006.
Ms. Wang Xiuxia, a Falun Gong practitioner from Shenyang City, was brutally persecuted in the Liaoning Province Women's Prison for nearly four years. She was brutally beaten, forced to sleep on a cement floor, and forced to work overtime doing slave labor. The guards poured buckets of cold water on her. In December 2005, she was tortured until she was nothing but skin and bones. Her whole body was swollen, and she was in critical condition. The prison released her to avoid responsibility. Ms. Wang passed away on January 24, 2006 after enduring all kinds of persecution. She was only 41 years old.
Early in the morning of September 23, 2005, a large number of police officers from Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province arrested Falun Gong practitioners. Ms. Lu Lihua was tortured to death only nine days later (see /emh/articles/2005/10/6/65618.html). Mr. Li Hongkui, Mr. Dai Jingmin, Ms. Wang Zhulan, Ms. Yang Maohua (Mr. Dai Jingmin's wife), Mr. Li Ge, and his wife Mrs. Lu Yan, among others, have been missing ever since.
According to inside information, these arrests were directed by Luo Gan, who came to Harbin twice in mid-September 2005. After his trips, police from Harbin City, Daqing City, Jiamusi City, Hegang City, Mudanjiang City, Jixi City, Shuangyashan City, Acheng City, Hailin City, Bayan County, Yichun City, etc. started the large scale arrests of Falun Gong practitioners. Led by the Harbin City 610 Office, a Special Case Group established in Zuishulin Village, Harbin City transferred many agents from each District 610 Office system.
Under instruction of Luo Gan, these agents beat Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Lu Lihua brutally, with bruises covering her neck down to her thighs. When she could not move any longer, the police saw that there was no hope of forcing her to give in, but they were afraid she would become evidence of their evil deeds, so they planned to silence her forever. The police officers forced her to climb a ladder, but Ms. Lu refused. Then they placed her on the ladder and forced her to climb up with electric baton shocks. When she was at the top of the ladder, they kicked the ladder, causing her to fall to her death. This murder took place in the afternoon of October 2, 2005. Ms. Lu's child is still not aware that her mother was killed so tragically.
The CCP officials have sealed the information of all Falun Gong practitioners who were arrested on September 23, 2005. They have denied all visitation and blocked information from coming out. Mr. Li Hongkui's wife has been trying so hard to find out where he is, but still doesn't have a clue. She tried to appeal for Mr. Li many times, but no lawyers dared to represent her, and no offices agreed to accept her case. An insider revealed that Mr. Li Hongkui was sent out of Harbin City and locked up in a prison, with handcuffs and ankle shackles.
Further information revealed that many Falun Gong practitioners who were arrested on September 23, 2005, have been locked up at the Shengdashanzhuang Resort located in Acheng City, which is equipped with all sorts of torture devices. Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Lu Lihua was tortured for seven days there and died at around 7:20 p.m. on October 2, 2005. Additionally, in October 2005, another fellow practitioner with last name Li (gender unknown) was tortured on a tiger bench for 24 hours while in Shengdashanzhuang.
Ms. Wu Yueju from Mahudao Village in Lioning Province is on hunger strike at Masanjia Forced Labor Camp.
Ms. Wu Yueju, born in 1952, is a Falun Gong practitioner from Mahudao Village of the Tiexi District, Pulandian City, Liaoning Province. After Ms. Wu went to appeal on behalf of Falun Gong in 1999, she was illegally detained at Liaoning Province Pulandian City Detention Center, and was not released until late April 2000.
Ms. Wu was arrested again in October 2000 and taken to the aforementioned detention center. She had been appealing for an environment to freely practice Falun Gong, and she held a hunger strike. Consequently, she was locked into an isolation cell for an entire week. It was January and the cell was damp and cold. Apparently, this was the first time a woman was locked into this isolation cell. Prison guards cuffed her hands and feet to a metal chair to prevent her from moving.
On December 4, 2003, Ms. Wu was released after serving three years and two extra months of illegal imprisonment at Dalian Forced Labor Camp.
On January 5, 2004, Ms. Wu exposed the persecution to Ms. Rong Qin, a lady from the same village. Ms. Wu also delivered truth clarifying materials and a DVD to Rong Qin's home. However, Rong Qin turned around and reported her to the authorities. At around 4:30 p.m. on January 6, Pulandian Tiexi Police illegally arrested Ms. Wu at her home. She was sent to the Pulandian Detention Center on January 7, and her family was not notified. She was then transferred to Dalian Forced Labor Camp and illegally sentenced to two years of forced labor. At Dalian Forced Labor Camp, Ms. Wu was brutally tortured again. As a result, she lost the full use of her hands. In October 2004, she was sent to Masanjia Forced Labor Camp's Group No. 3 and cruelly tortured.
In March 2005, Masanjia was reorganized, and she was sent to Group 1 for even more cruel persecution. At present, Ms. Wu is on hunger strike at Liaoning Province's Masanjia Forced Labor Camp. Her situation is critical.
The 2nd Prison in Xinjiang Province brutally persecutes female Falun Gong practitioners. Falun Gong practitioners Ms. Zhao Shuyuan, Ms. Wang Xi and Ms. Li Xianghong have been brutally persecuted each day for as long as two to three years. They have been seriously harmed both mentally and physically.
Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zhao Shuyuan from Kelamayi, Xinjiang Province is illegally detained at the 9th Ward of the 2nd Prison in Xinjiang Province. For nearly three years, she has participated in hunger strikes and she refuses to wear the prison uniform. Each day, the police in the prison order inmates to wrap her body up with white bed sheets and send her to the hospital for force-feeding. Due to the long-term persecution, she is very weak.
Female Falun Gong practitioner Wang Xi from Shihezi, Xinjiang Province is detained in the 9th Ward of the 2nd Prison in Xinjiang Province. After she loudly shouted, "Falun Dafa is good," the prison police violently persecuted her. She has been detained for over two years. Each day, the prison police hang her up, with both of her hands over the bed. They release her to go to bed after 2 a.m. each morning. Then at 4 a. m. each morning she is again handcuffed and hung over the bed. Due to long-term persecution, Ms. Wang Xi has suffered a great deal both mentally and physically.
Similarly, Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Li Xianghong from the Urumqi City Engineering Institute, Xinjiang Province has been severely persecuted. In October 1999, her work unit sent her to the 4th People's Hospital (a mental hospital) for two months. They injected some drugs into her body without her permission. In April 2001, she was sentenced for a three-year term in a forced labor camp. In March 2002, she was arrested again and was sentenced for eleven years and kept in the 2nd Prison in Xinjiang Province. In the prison, she suffered all kinds of persecution. The police beat her, abused her, would not allow her to sleep and tried to brainwash her. They asked those who succumbed to the torture and brainwashing to talk to her around the clock, but Ms. Li Xianghong is very firm in her belief. Their tricks failed. At present, the prison police have ordered Chen Dan and others who succumbed to the violence to brainwash her around the clock.
Police officer Ma Ling from the 3rd Ward of the 2nd Prison of Xinjiang Province is very violent
Ma Ling is a prison guard from the 3rd Ward of the 2nd Prison of Xinjiang Province. She lives in a small district in Guanghui, Urumqi City. She is extremely violent. She often threatens and orders other inmates to use force and violence to persecute Falun Gong practitioners in her section. Moreover, she tries to cover up what she has done.
The persecution towards male Falun Gong practitioners in the 5th Prison in Xinjiang Province is also astonishing. During the hot summer days in 2005, the prison police wrapped Falun Gong practitioners in plastic bags and dragged them outside to bake under the hot sun. Not long after they were brought outside, the Falun Gong practitioners would faint due to lack of oxygen. Being beaten became a daily routine.
Falun Gong practitioner Chen Yujiang has been on a hunger strike for over a year. He is very weak. In spite of his condition, the prison police still use violence on him. They use all kinds of persecution methods and force-feed him every day.
Ms. Wang Zanmei, 60 years old, lives in 18 Qinglongnan Street, Qixian County, Henan Province. She had polio when she was a child and could not move her left leg at all. She had great difficulty walking and fell down five to six times a day. About 15 years ago, she was in a car accident and her left leg received a comminuted fracture (a fracture in which the bone is splintered or crushed). After two major surgeries, she could not bend her knee and had to use crutches for two years. Afterwards, Ms. Wang got heart disease. Her brain did not receive enough blood and she lost feeling in half of her body. She went to the hospital for a brain scan and was diagnosed with cerebral thrombosis. She really did not have the courage to live any more.
Ms. Wang began to practice Falun Gong in 1998. She has become healthy and has recovered from all her ailments through practicing Falun Gong. She used to not be able to bend her knee, but now she can sit in the double lotus position (double leg crossing) for two hours. Although she still walks with a limp, she can walk fast. She takes the initiative to do all the domestic chores. She also goes out frequently to be a baby-sitter in order to help with her household expenses.
After July 20, 1999, Ms. Wang Zanmei felt distressed at seeing Jiang's regime persecute Falun Gong. In order to enable more people to become healthy, to help everyone in China learn the truth, and to tell the government how wonderful Falun Gong is and that everything about Falun Gong is beneficial to the nation and the people, she went to Beijing in November 2000. She was arrested at Tiananmen Square and was "illegally detained" for 18 days. She was then sent back to the local police department and detained there for more than a month. She was not released until January 6, 2001 and was illegally fined 3,000 yuan.
In the afternoon on January 18, 2001, when she was cooking dinner, the police from the National Security Group of the county police department again illegally arrested her through trickery. Her son said at that time, "Please let my mother celebrate the New Year at home." The police replied that she could not stay unless they paid 5,000 yuan.
Her family had just paid a 3,000-yuan fine, and only 12 days later the authorities wanted to extort another 5,000 yuan. Her son did not have that much money, so the police accused her of "disturbing the public order" and detained her for a long time.
After 45 days of illegal imprisonment, she was transferred to the detention center. The police handcuffed her and practitioner Lixia together by the hands for 30 days. During this time, Ms. Wang needed help eating and going to the restroom. Later on, she was sentenced to three years in the forced labor camp.
Ms. Wang was extremely weak due to torture in the detection center, so the forced labor camp refused to accept her for fear of having to take responsibility for her condition. She was locked up in the detection center until May 25, 2005. The police released her after extorting another 500 yuan.
On August 12, 2001, when she was working in the night market, Yang Yumei, the director of the local police station in Qi County, and other police officers arrested her and took her to Qi County. Yang Yumei instigated the police to put Ms. Wang together with three male criminals dressed only in their underwear and locked the door. She resisted very strongly and eventually they opened the door, but they sent her to stay with another two men the whole night.
On July 19, 2002, the Qi County Court illegally tried Falun Gong practitioners Li Junxia, Geng Hongli and Yang Hongren. On that day Ms. Wang Zanmei was an observer in the court. About an hour after the session started, the police suddenly started arresting people in the court. They grabbed Ms. Wang's clothes and dragged her outside. She did not know why the police did this. She started shouting, "The bandits are arresting innocent people. Falun Gong is good! Falun Gong is the righteous!" Later on, the police admitted that the reason they arrested people was because they were afraid of practitioners in the court. The 610 Office and the police arbitrarily detained three practitioners for 15 days.
After Ms. Wang was released, she wrote a letter to the Qi County Court saying, "Who gave you the right to kidnap innocent people from the courtroom?" She sent the letter to both the Qi County Court and the police department. However, the police department plotted to arrest her again. To avoid further persecution, she was forced to become destitute and homeless for more than a month.
In the middle of the night on September 26, 2002, when Ms. Wang was sleeping at home, she heard loud knocking on the door. When her husband opened the door, six or seven men rushed into the house. They neither wore uniforms nor had any formal documents. They were just like bandits searching Ms. Wang's house and confiscating her property. They dragged her away and locked her up in Qi County Detention Center.
In the detention center, Ma Shaozhong from the political department, along with a large man, beat and kicked her violently and stole her Falun Gong book. While in the detention center, Ms. Wang was brutally tortured by police officers Ma Shaozhong and Xu Canjun. After half a month, she was transferred to the County Police Station.
Because she refused to cooperate in the county police station, she was handcuffed together with another four practitioners. The police used three heavy foot shackles (each shackle is over ten kilograms) to chain the four practitioners together.
The practitioners' legs were swollen because of the extremely cold weather. They wrapped small towels around their ankles to reduce the pain, but the cell leader Zhu Yu threw their towels away. In addition to these hardships, every day they had to face and listen to the policemen's insults and verbal abuse. Even in the face of such cruel treatment, the practitioners stood by the principle of "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance" and kindly clarified the truth about Falun Gong to the police.
At 5 p.m. on October 17, 2003, while Ms. Wang was looking after her aged and sickly uncle and aunt, Director of the local police station in Qi County Yang Yumei led more than 10 policemen and suddenly broke into her uncle's house. They searched Ms. Wang's house and confiscated her property. She was again arrested, accused of so-called "disturbing the public order," and imprisoned for 50 days. She was soon sentenced to forced labor and sent to the Shibalihe Women's Forced Labor Camp in Zhengzhou City. However, the forced labor camp refused to receive her due to her poor health.
For several years Ms. Wang tried to submit an appeal about the long-term persecution she was being subjected to. She went to the upper level department of Kaifeng Political and Judiciary Committee at 2 p.m. on September 13, 2004. Kaifeng Political and Judiciary Committee personnel tore up her appeal on the spot and handcuffed her in the office. Later, the Qixian County Political and Judiciary Committee 610 Office took her away and angrily threatened, "We have to sentence you." Ms. Wang was held in Qixian County Detention Center and persecuted. Her family members were not allowed to visit her or send clothes to her. She was released after being on a hunger strike for eight days.
On December 6, 2005, the 610 Office of Kaifeng City tricked her into going to the police department, where she was arrested. She was sentenced to one and a half years of forced labor and taken to the Shibalihe Women's Forced Labor Camp in Zhengzhou City.
During the past six years, Ms. Wang has been arrested by the 610 Office and the police department several times, illegally detained, and sentenced based on fabricated evidence for more than one year. She suffered cruel torture and inhuman maltreatment. Every time she was arrested, her family was damaged spiritually, physically, and economically. Each time, her mother came down with a serious illness due to the angst and stressed placed on her by her daughter's arrest.
