Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Zhang Xiangfu
was an employee of Fangzheng County Coal Mine in Heilongjiang Province.
When he refused to give up his practice of Falun Gong, he was arrested
and tortured many times. Police from the Fangzheng County Police
Department and the 610 Office
sent him to Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp in 2002. There the guards used
over twenty different torture methods on him. They broke several ribs
and chest bones, his skull was fractured and the backs of his hands
were scorched. The guards invented a new torture to increase his
suffering. They shot needles from a homemade gun at the practitioners.
The needles go deep into the flesh, where they cause excruciating pain.
Mr. Zhang died on October 15, 2005, from brutal torture, at the age of
33.
The following is part of a video interview of Zhang Xiangfu when he was
alive, where he describes the torture inflicted on him.
Q: You said that you picked up toothpicks. Does this mean they poured
the toothpicks on the ground for you to pick up and package in the
forced labor camp?
Zhang: When we packed toothpicks, some would drop on the floor. The
foreman told us to sweep up all the dust, dirt and garbage together.
Then the foreman told us to pick out the toothpicks and pack them for
sale. Some toothpicks had phlegm on them, our hands were very dirty and
we had scabies on our hands.
Q: Are the scabies contagious?
Zhang: Ah...
Q: Your hands had blood and yellow pus on them?
Zhang: Yes, blood and pus...
Q: Were the toothpicks to be sold on the market?
Zhang: Yes, some were exported and some were sent to other places in
China.
Q: They were sold overseas?
Zhang: Yes, many were sold overseas. Later in my stay, Zhao Shuang
(group leader) ordered three prisoners to torture me using one of the
cruelest methods. I felt extremely ill from the compression of my
internal organs and was nearly suffocated.
Q: Suffocated?
Zhang: Yes, then Zhao Shuang tortured me by using an electric baton on
my head for a long time. Another time, when Wang Kai was on duty, he
used...
Q: What position does Wang Kai hold?
Zhang: Wang Kai is an instructor. When he was on duty, he ordered three
prisoners to torture me. One of the prisoners was Li Chunlong, who made
my nose bleed. He also clenched my private parts, causing me enormous
pain.
Q: Those methods are extremely obscene.
Zhang: Extremely obscene.
Zhang: After a period of time, Yang Wenjie was again transferred back
to Group 5. They tortured Yang Wenjie in the same way, and as a
result Yang Wenjie lost control of his bowels. Then they pulled him to
the big line (a line of prisoners). They slapped his face and tortured
him.
Zhang: After a period of time, my legs would often cramp when I tried
to sleep at night. The long persecution and torture severely injured my
muscles. They were extremely painful.
Q: Were you getting muscle cramps many times during the day?
Zhang: If my legs were in a slightly wrong position at night, they
would cramp. I had to use lots of effort to bring the muscles back to a
position without pain. It was very painful to do that.
Q: Was it always like that or did it happen many times during a day?
Zhang: When I slept at night.
Q: Many times a night?
Zhang: Many, many times during the night.
Q: Basically, you could not sleep well.
Zhang: I could not sleep well. They cramped as soon as my legs were not
in the right position. I had to stretch them out right away.
Q: That is a lot of suffering.
Zhang: After this long-term persecution, I had a high fever all day. I
was emaciated and the hospital diagnosed it as tuberculosis. I was in
pain all day, my high temperature did not go down and my chest felt
like I was suffocating. All of these things done to me were only a drop
in the ocean of crimes the Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp committed
against Falun Gong practitioners. Many people experienced the same
things I did. Many died from the persecution. In comparison, the degree
of persecution I suffered was relatively small compared to what others
suffered. For example, Huang Tiecheng was left hanging up in the air
for three days and nights. During those days, they also tortured him in
other ways. That caused his joints to swell. He was in great pain, and
whenever he stood he had to hold onto the wall to walk. Two people
supervised him on every shift and they did not allow him to sleep. Many
people tortured him in shifts, often punching him in the chest. Yang Yu
used an electric baton on Huang Tiecheng while he was hung up.
Q: What position does Yang Yu hold?
Zhang: Yang Yu was a head (a leader). He tortured Huang Tiecheng with
an electric baton for a long time. When Zhao Shuang was on duty, he
would torture him again with the electric baton, pour water on him, and
then shock his private parts. He used the baton all over Huang's body,
including his mouth, abdomen and head. After pouring water on the body
of Huang Tiecheng, they would open up the window to let the wind blow
directly on him. It was nearly November and the weather was very cold.
The prisoners who supervised him closed the window when they got very
cold. During the three days, he was deprived of sleep and his arms lost
all feeling from the hanging. Therefore, the prisoners let him down,
forcibly revived the feeling in his arms and then hung him back up
again.
Q: How high was he hung?
Zhang: He was standing straight up.
Q: With his arms and legs separated?
Zhang: Yes, hung with the handcuffs on...
Q: Hung on two sides of a bunk bed.
Zhang: Yes, hung on a bunk bed and tortured for three days. They
continuously beat him. As a result, he could not eat and vomited bile.
Then, head Yang Yu thought his life was in danger, so he let him down.
Huang Tiecheng fainted and was sent to the infirmary for a check-up. He
was diagnosed with liver disease and was sent to the Wanjia Hospital.
Huang Tiecheng was persecuted severely. Dong Wencheng and another Falun
Gong practitioner from Shuangcheng were hung up for several days,
during which time they were suffered beatings. A practitioner named Shi
Zuosheng also encountered severe persecution. He shouted, "Falun Dafa
is good" one day. He was wearing a cotton shirt and underpants when he
was pushed onto the iron chair. He was forced to sit on the iron chair
for one day and night.
Q: Was it during the winter?
Zhang: It was in late January and it was very cold.
Q: He had to sit on the iron chair wearing cotton underclothes? The
iron chair would be icy-cold in the winter.
Zhang: Yes, extremely cold, and they tied him with bandages.
Q: Where is Shi Zuosheng from?
Zhang: He is from Shuangcheng. When Zhao Shuang was on duty, he
tortured Shi Zuosheng with two electric batons for around 30 minutes.
He tortured his private parts and his face became swollen from the long
periods of electrocution. Another time, Head Qiang was on duty and he
entered the small cell. Then we heard the sound of someone bumping
against the wall. I heard Qiang tell the people who supervised
practitioner Shi Zuosheng to throw him against the wall until he was
close to death. One of the prisoners kicked Shi Zuosheng's head with
great force and did not stop until his shoes broke from kicking him. We
could still hear the bumping sounds the next morning. Shi Zuosheng was
protesting and his head was bleeding. They sent him to the infirmary.
When the infirmary released him, Zhao Shuang tied Shi Zuosheng to a bed
for seven days. Shi became emaciated, vomited everything he ate and had
frequent headaches. His body suffered great harm.
Zhang: The above are my personal experiences in Changlinzi Forced Labor
Camp. They are all facts. I hope fellow practitioners outside of China
will send this footage to the United Nations Human Rights Committee,
the International Justice Committee's special court and other human
rights organizations. I hope the kind-hearted people around the world
can together stop this brutal persecution of kind Falun Gong
practitioners in China. This is genocide of good people who follow
"Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance." They are a benefit to society,
causing no harm. Although I have experienced many tribulations, I won't
give up "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance." Human beings need
sincerity and kindness.

On March 9, 2006, I went to Jiuzhan,
planning to distribute several copies of "The Nine Commentaries on the
Communist Party," but I was arrested before I distributed any
copies. I
was in the residence apartment near Jiuzhan Paper Factory when the
police came and illegally arrested me after receiving a tip.
A few policemen dragged me to the Jiuzhan Police Station. With a smile
on my face, I started to clarify the truth about Falun Gong to the
police. I said to the police, "I am a senior citizen that used to live
in Jiuzhan. I returned to Jiuzhan today by bus for the purpose of
clarifying the truth about Falun Gong." I continued, "The Epoch Times
published 'The Nine Commentaries on
the Communist Party' in order to
reveal to the public an endless litany of heinous crimes that the
Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has committed since it took power in
China. The CCP has killed millions of people. Worst of all, it has
murdered by torture Falun Gong practitioners who followed the
principles
of Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance." But those policemen
refused to listen. They handcuffed me and took me back home. After
ransacking my home and confiscating several of Teacher's photographs,
Teacher's new articles and all the Falun Gong truth-clarification
materials, they dragged me back to the police station.
The police stuffed me in a special iron chair and locked my ankles,
wrists and torso to the chair. A policeman said, "You are an elder to
me. As soon as you tell us who you get these materials from, I will
release you right away without any fuss. Just say it. Take care of
yourself. Forget about others. You don't need to suffer through this."
I thought to myself, "I shall never give away any information to these
depraved policemen. I shall never give them any chance to persecute my
fellow practitioners." This special agent repeatedly threatened me to
tell him the fellow practitioner that supplied me with these materials,
but I ignored him. Eventually he gave up and left.
Next the chief of the police station entered the room with two
policemen. The three of them were very drunk when they started to
torture me. At the time I told them solemnly, "You must not inflict me
with any torture!" The police chief said, "But I will! I will not only
torture you, but also put you in jail after I am done with you!" I told
them, "You have no power over me!" They asked, "Who does, then?" I
replied, "Only my Teacher has power over me."
The police chief soaked a towel in a liquid drug and liquor. (The
liquid drug turned milky white after coming into contact with the
liquor.) They gagged my mouth and nose with the towel and tied my head
to the back of the chair with a belt, with my head tilted upward. With
my face facing up, they kept pouring the mixture over the towel. They
didn't care if I was suffocating. I used my tongue to stop myself from
swallowing any liquid. I repeatedly retched the mixture while they were
force-feeding me with it. I almost choked on it during the process.
They poured out almost an entire quart bottle of the liquid drug. I
retched all over my clothes and the floor around the iron chair.
Next, the police started a new torture. The three of them each used a
cigarette lighter to burn my fingertips and toes. Seven of my
fingertips were badly burned. My left big toe was burned badly. My
fingernails turned black. To this day my fingertips have not healed.
They continue to discharge pus and blood. The pain is unbearable, but
at the time of the torture the pain was even worse. I felt I'd be
better off dead. I thought of Falun Gong at heart while shouting out
loud,
"Teacher! Save me!" The agony subsided a bit when I did that.
While some of them were burning my fingertips with lighters, others
were shocking me with an electric baton and beating me with a very
thick wooden club. When they finally became exhausted, the police
dragged me to the ground from the iron chair. A policeman kept pulling
my arms up from the back and kept my legs straight. The police chief
produced a thick iron bar and laid it across my legs. Then he sat on
top of the iron bar, adding a lot of weight on my legs. Words cannot
describe the excruciating pain. Next, they pressed my upper body
forward, put a chair on my back and had a policeman sit in the chair,
forcing my upper body forward to the ground. Moreover, he pulled my
arms up by force while sitting on my back. The pain was excruciating.
Even to this day, my shoulders and arms are still in a lot of pain.
After a night of torture, the three of them still would not leave me
alone. They tied me to the iron chair and cuffed my arms and legs to
the chair. They did not untie me until the morning. The back of my
hands became very swollen and my legs turned blue. I was unable to walk.
At around noon of the next day (March 10, 2006), the police transferred
me to the Fengman Precinct Detention Center. At the detention center, I
asked them, "What type of drug did you put in the liquor?" They
replied, "It was a lethal drug." The police chief pointed at me and
said to another policeman, "This is a good person." I questioned the
police chief, "Since you know I am a good person. Why did you take me
here?" He didn't answer.
I developed a fever. I felt cold and shivered. I felt pain in every
inch of my body. The pain was unbearable. The liquid mixture that they
poured over me burned my face in many places. My hair and my clothes
were filthy from the vomiting. Since that day, I had severe cramps
every day. The physician at the detention center diagnosed it to be
caused by the drug. I was on medication for about two weeks to
discharge the poison out of my body. Afterwards, the cramps stopped. I
survived the poisoning, but I felt a lot of pain all over my body. I
became muddleheaded. For about two weeks I was bedridden. The warden of
the detention center and the physician notified Jiuzhan Police Station
to take me home. However, the police from Jiuzhan lied to both the
detention center and me. They told the detention center that they were
taking me home, but in fact they transferred me, as well as three
fellow Falun Gong practitioners, to Heizuizi Women's Forced Labor Camp
in Changchun City.
At the time I refused to
cooperate with the police. I told them, "I did not commit any crime. It
is you that have committed crimes. You are persecuting me and you are
now trying to throw me into a forced labor camp. I refuse to enter such
a place. You are the criminals. It is you that should be locked up."
However, they dragged me into the forced labor camp by force.
Once in the forced labor camp, I started to expose the police's crimes.
I said, "The Jiuzhan Police Station almost killed me. They tried to
kill me by force-feeding me with a mixture of liquor and poison.
Moreover, they burned my fingers with lighters. They have inflicted
excruciating pain upon me. They persecuted me. They are the criminals."
An official at the forced labor camp inspected my fingers and saw that
they were terribly burned and that my fingernails were black. She
declared right away, "We cannot take her. She must be released right
now." However, the police from Jiuzhan Police Station refused to give
up. They dragged me somewhere with no one else present and started
kicking and cursing at me while declaring fiercely, "I cannot put you
in there now, but I will give you hell!"
In order to put me into the forced labor camp, they devised a scheme.
They took me to a police hospital in Changchun City and
brought me to the emergency surgical center. They asked the physician
to guarantee in writing that I was fit enough for labor education. Once
they obtained a guarantee, they brought me back to Heizuizi Women's
Forced Labor Camp. It was already after 6:00PM when we were at the
camp. Everyone had left work, so they had to make some phone calls to
ask the admissions official to come back. She looked at the doctor's
note and inspected my hands again. She said, "No. She will develop
infections in her hands, which will affect her ability to perform
labor. We cannot take her." The police from Jiuzhan Police Station
pleaded with the admissions person for a long time, but she was very
determined not to take me. Eventually, they gave up and brought me back
to the police station. I felt cold and was in a lot of pain. They kept
me in the police station until midnight.

Because I didn't give up my belief and
firmly believe in "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance," I suffered all
kinds of persecutiuons. I was close to death several times due to
Jiang's regime's persecution. In 1999 I was illegally dismissed from my
job. I was locked up many times. My original happy family was
destroyed. Then I opted to become homeless to avoid further
persecution.
Obtaining Falun Gong, I was freed from disease
I was a person who was formerly tormented by many diseases. During the
1998 Lunar New Year I got into a car incident, which made things even
worse for me. I lost hope in everything. In June 1998, a friend gave me
a copy of Zhuan
Falun. After that I began to read Falun Gong books and do
the exercises. A miracle happened several months later. All my diseases
disappeared without a trace. The pain disappeared completely. I could
walk so fast on my injured legs that I felt as if I were flying.
I went to Beijing twice and was tortured so badly that the bones
showed through the skin of my feet
Just when I was immersed in happiness, on July 22, 1999, the media
stopped all other programs and broadcast only one program all day long,
slandering Falun Gong. On September 20, I took the train to Beijing,
intending to tell the government my experiences of how I benefited from
studying Falun Gong.
I was shocked as soon as I arrived at the Appeals Office of the State
Council in Beijing. The People's Appeals Office had already become an
arrest site. Police officers were aggressively arresting practitioners.
I couldn't approach. Helplessly, I returned.
On October 25 I once again went to Beijing. Just as I arrived at
Tiananmen Square, several police officers walked toward me and tried to
arrest me. I asked, "What are you trying to do?" They said, "We want
you to curse the Falun Gong Teacher. Do you dare to do so?" I said, "I
don't even curse or beat anyone when I educate my son!" They said, "She
is a Falun Gong practitioner!" They pushed me onto a police car and
sent me to Miyun Prison.
There, several policemen pushed me to the floor and put me in shackles
and handcuffs that weighed about 30 to 40 pounds and were covered wih
rust. I was handcuffed behind my back. The vicious policemen took off
my shoes. They dragged me to the yard covered with cobblestones and
forced me to walk circle after circle wearing only pantyhose without
shoes. When I had walked for several hours I really couldn't walk
anymore. The policemen then came and dragged me by my arms and ran
around the yard, with my legs bouncing off the ground. Because I was
exhausted from walking for so long, I was unable to protest the
torture. They stopped when they were too tired to walk. My pantyhose
was by then torn and my legs were chafed. The handcuffs and shackles
had cut deeply into the flesh and my skin had become a mixture of flesh
and blood. In spite of this, they did not remove the handcuffs or
shackles and kept them in place for six days. When I was sent back to
the Jilin City Detention Center, my feet were so injured that the bones
showed through. It hurt as badly, as if someone had cut me with a
knife. I had difficulty walking for more than six months.
On February 15, 2000, when I was sharing Falun Gong experiences and
understandings with other practitioners, I was again
arrested. I was sent to the No.1 Detention Center in Jilin City. The
police there ordered the criminals to monitor us. They prohibited us
from talking or doing the exercises. I was punished twice with having
to squat for long periods of time. I was forced to squat for more than
10 hours once. My legs were swollen and I couldn't stand. I went on a
hunger strike. On the sixth day the police force-fed me. A criminal
told me, "I made the corn paste. A half bag of salt was added to two
handfuls of corn flour." About eight people pushed me down and
force-fed me. When they did so, my stomach began to hurt. My mouth was
cut, and my stomach was in such pain that I couldn't stretch my back. I
couldn't eat normally for a long time.
Darkness in the forced labor camp
On March 8, 2000, I was sentenced to a one-year term in the Heizuizi
Forced Labor Camp in Changchun. Seven practitioners and I were arrested
at the same time, including Wang Rui, who was just 18 years old. Once
we were sent there we were locked in a solitary cell.
Policewoman Hou Zhihong, who was in charge of the newcomer's team in
the 4th Group, screamed, "Stand up! I'll tell you that no
exercising is permitted in the forced labor camp. If you do the
exercises, these things are waiting for you!" She then took out
electric batons, straps, handcuffs and other instruments of torture.
She said, "Do you see these? There are still some things that are even
more terrible. I will choose to use them according to your attitude."
We were forced to sit on benches every day, with no talking or moving.
We were forced to sit that way for more than 10 hours a day. Later we
were forced to do slave labor, as least 17 or 18 hours a day. Sometimes
they let us sleep only two or three hours. If we worked a little
slower, they would either beat or verbally abuse us.
Because of the camp officials' illegal tactics, more than 10
practitioners held a hunger strike and requested to be unconditionally
released. The camp authorities had us force-fed brutally. The guard
said to me, "You are the first!" They pushed me on the bed and inserted
a long rubber tube into my mouth to my stomach. After a long time the
corn paste just couldn't be poured in. I was suffocating and couldn't
take a breath. I broke loose and sat up, out of reflex. Realizing that
I would die unless I did so, I quickly pulled out the tube. I was
completely exhausted, however, and coughed constantly. After that, I
often coughed and vomited blood.
On May 13, 2000, the practitioners locked up in the 4th Group held a
group hunger strike to protest our illegal detention and persecution.
This time the officials escalated the persecution against us.
Administration Chief Yue Jun and others held electric batons and bound
the practitioners undergoing hunger strikes to a metal wire bed. They
shocked the practitioners' mouths, necks and entire bodies while
force-feeding them. The metal wire bed bounced up, along with the
practitioner's body. Sparks flew everywhere. The sounds of the electric
batons, cries, shouts, and sounds and smell of vomiting filled the
hallway of the health care building. It was a miserable sight. Yue Jun
then walked up to me and said, "I only recognize you. I will start with
you today!" They kept shocking me for a long time. Immediately, big
blisters rose on my body and neck. My wool sweater was burned. She
still wouldn't stop. She took off my sweater, re-bound me to the metal
bed, and shocked me again for a long time. The last thing I remember
was darkness before my eyes and intolerable pain.
In August 2000, policewoman Zhang Guimei said that she would use a
different technique on us. She ordered several practitioners who didn't
renounce Falun Gong to go to a small storage room, where she forced us
to sit
on the ground in the lotus position for eight hours every day. Our
hands were put behind our backs and we were prohibited from moving.
Policewoman Li Xiaohua said, "Whoever moves will be shocked with a big
electric baton!" We were forbidden to use the restroom. All of us
suffered from blood blisters on the feet. Some vomited. The extreme
pain made us hover between life and death. When Ms. Wang Xiufen moved a
little, she was dragged forward and kicked and beaten by several group
leaders. Then she was forced to continue to sit for three days.
Zhang Guimei threatened, "The state gives us a death quota! I will
first use that on you three," which meant Wang Xiulan, who was
eventually persecuted to death, Jin Min, and me.
By the end of November 2001, I had been locked up for ten months beyond
my term.
Newly arrested practitioners were constantly sent to the Heizuizi
Forced Labor Camp . The authorities used violence on steadfast
practitioners. They were forced to stand for several days in a row,
deprived of sleep, bound to a bed, and shocked with electric batons.
One day Zhang Guimei stared at me and said, "As soon as the Chinese
Communist Party Central Committee closed the meeting, they issued new
documents. We will send all of you that don't 'reform' to the northwest
region where there are no signs of human habitation. You will have no
way to come back. You will die of hunger or cold!"
They subjected the newcomers to violence on a daily basis to force them
to "reform."
Seeing this pained my heart.
On November 30 I again held a hunger strike. I put forward three
requests: 1. Stop violating the law while executing the law, meaning,
stop the violent persecution of practitioners using electric batons and
other instruments of torture. 2. No term extensions. The forced labor
camp officials have no right to extend victims' terms at will, which is
disobeying the law. 3. Release all the Falun Gong practitioners who are
"illegally imprisoned."
After I finished stating my request, group leader Guan Wei said,
"It's impossible! When are you going to eat?" I replied, "If you don't
promise me, I won't eat."
On the third day of my hunger strike they force-fed me as a means of
persecution, not to save my life. Several people pushed and held me
down and inserted a rubber tube into my nose. I coughed badly and
couldn't breathe. They tried to insert it into my nose but it came out
of my mouth. I had a severe nosebleed and vomited a large quantity of
blood. They didn't care about my life and said, "No matter what
happens, we have to insert it!"
It frequently happened that the tube needed to be inserted five or six
times. I was nearly suffocated several times. In fact, even if the tube
were inserted, they wouldn't feed me many things. They knew that it
wouldn't help anything, but they had to force-feed me twice a day. Each
time after they force-fed me, I was exhausted and felt that I had had a
narrow escape from danger. I clearly knew what the torture of
force-feeding meant. I already was mentally well prepared: I'm still
alive today, but I might lose my life tomorrow. They saw that they
couldn't change my mind. On the eleventh day they decided to send me to
the police hospital.
The above incidents are only part of what I've experienced and
witnessed in the forced labor camp.
The police hospital
Before they sent me to the police hospital, the forced labor camp
authorities extorted 2,000 yuan from
my younger brother. On December 9 the camp administrators, guards, and
doctors sent me under escort to the police hospital. They threatened me
all the way to the hospital, "Didn't you refuse to eat? You thought
that the forced labor camp was bad. After you get to the police
hospital, you will see that they have plenty of methods to punish you!"
Wang Kefei was tortured to death the end of 2001 and died in that
police hospital.
The guards bound me to a bed with hand and foot rings. I could only lie
down and couldn't move, not even a little. They then took a very thick
rubber tube and inserted it into my stomach through my nose. Because
the tube was too thick, they attempted to insert it several times but
still couldn't succeed. It made me cough violently. The guards didn't
care about my life and forcibly inserted the tube into my nose. They
tortured me for a long time and finally succeeded in inserting the
tube. I had broken out in a sweat and was exhausted. They said, "Let's
continue!" They then inserted a catheter. My body was shaking from the
pain, and the tube in my nose kept me from breathing properly.
It was extremely painful, and death was a blink away. At night, saliva
kept running into my mouth, but I could not take care of myself because
of the bindings. Sometimes when I could not spit I felt almost
suffocated. They had inserted the tube but did not feed me. They kept
the tube constantly inside me as a form of abuse, keeping it inserted
so long that my throat was swollen and I coughed continually. Since
nobody was taking care of me and I was tightly cuffed to the bed, I
could only turn my head to the side when I had to spit. My face and
body were covered in filth. When the catheter leaked and urine spilled
onto the floor, the criminal detainees cleaned the floor with my cotton
pants while cursing at me "for was polluting the ward." During the day
they were too disgusted to be around me and stayed in other rooms.
Before they left they would leave the windows open. It was December,
the coldest month of the year and this was in northern China. I only
had my underwear on. The mattress was wet, and the quilt covered me
only up to my chest, and yet I couldn't move. Pain, cold, physical
abuse, and insults came together. Every day I suffered in great misery.
The criminal in the same cell told me, "I've been here for more than a
year. I've already seen a lot of things. How about Yu Lixin? She was
from the city government, but she was still tortured. Later, nobody
took care of her and they abandoned her in the hallway!"
After I returned home I heard that Yu Lixin underwent a hunger strike
for four months in the police hospital. Nobody took care of her there,
either. It was the hospital rule. Later they force-fed her. The
catheter broke and left her soaked in urine. Feces accumulated so much
that it touched her hair. Bedsores covered her whole body. She died on
May 4, 2002 from the torture.
On the fourth day the camp authorities were afraid that I might die and
they would have to take the responsibility. They let my younger brother
take me home. Finally I left the evil den. After only four days in the
police hospital I developed the profound opinion that this hospital was
not for curing illnesses or saving lives, but for intensifying the
abuse and torment of people under the persecution.
The above incidents are only part of what I had to endure under the
persecution. Jiang's regime is so vicious and inhumane. Their crimes
are too numerous to record. But none of the difficulties and hardships
could shake the kind and righteous people's belief in Falun Gong and
"Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance."

Since August 2005, Tuanhe Forced Labor
Camp in Beijing has intensified its persecution of Falun Gong
practitioners.
Practitioner Guo Zhenge was tortured until he became muddleheaded. Gao
Changze, Zhang Qingshan, and Wang Jiping were viciously beaten. The
guards even put drugs in practitioners' food in order to "transform"
them. The following are partial accounts of the persecution of
practitioners in Tuanhe Force Labor Camp.
1. "Sandwiching"
The most common tactic that the guards used is to order inmates
convicted of theft or drug abuse to monitor the practitioners. In Team
III, guard Yin Hongsong was the most vicious. Sometimes one inmate
monitored one practitioner, but more often than not two, and sometimes
even four inmates monitored and sandwiched one practitioner. The
practitioners would be placed under close monitoring around the clock,
completely losing their personal freedom. Moreover, they were
frequently beaten and verbally abused, which caused them bodily and
psychological harm.
2. Vicious Beatings
The guards entice the inmates with sentence reduction, privileges to
buy food or order dishes, and at the same time intimidate and threaten
them to persecute practitioners. Practitioners Gao Changze (a
60-year-old farmer in Huirou City), Zhang Qingshan (close to 40 years
old), and Wang Jiping (30's) were physically attacked and verbally
abused by the inmates.
Guard Yin Hongsong beat practitioner Xing Baoxiang to the ground and
claimed that he fell due to high blood pressure. Guard Li Wei also beat
Mr. Xing.
3. Starving practitioners and not letting them use the restroom
For those practitioners who refuse to be "transformed," the guards
often do not give them enough food. They are only given a steamed bun
and a small amount of vegetable soup. They are often not allowed to
drink water or use the restroom.
One practitioner was held in a storage room. He was not allowed to go
to the restroom and was forced to urinate on the ground. When a
practitioner goes to the restroom, he is often held by the inmate by
the collar and the arm.
4. Sleep Deprivation
The guards often keep the practitioners up until very late at night,
and sometimes not let them sleep at all. When they do let the
practitioners go to sleep, they often poke at them from time to time to
disturb them. In the winter, they keep the windows wide open when the
practitioners are sleeping.
Practitioner Guo Zhenge (close to 50 years old, a farmer in the Beijing
suburbs) has been deprived of sleep over a long period of time by
guards Gao Jianguo and Li Weichang, and is now mentally disoriented.
5. Lacing drugs in food and savage force-feeding
Practitioner Gao Changze often called out "Falun Dafa Is Good" while
being tortured. The guards ordered the inmates to gag him with a mop.
Guard Li Wei secretly put drugs in his food.
Some practitioners went on hunger strikes in protest. The guards
ordered the practitioners to pay for the cost of their force-feeding.
They also forced the practitioners to do hard labor.
6. Confinement
Guards put the steadfast practitioners in a small room and have the
inmates watch over them and beat them. When the practitioner appealed
to the authorities, the guards would collude with the inmates and said
that they were not aware of any beatings taking place.
7. Sitting in a child's chair
The guards force the practitioners to sit in a small child's chair.
They force the practitioners to sit still and hold a piece of paper in
between their legs. The sitting can last half a day, a day, or even
weeks at a time. Practitioners are beaten if they move at all.
8. Slave labor
The guards force the practitioners to do slave labor to make money for
the guards. The labor includes braiding hair for wigs, making
unsanitary tourniquets, constructing advertising products, making
pieces of hardwood floors, packaging DVD's, and other forms of manual
labor.
9. Covering up the truth
Sometimes the guards conduct an "audit" to cover up their crimes. They
would have some inmates fill out surveys but only pass them out to the
ones that would give favorable feedback. Occasionally they would ask
everyone to fill out surveys, but those are used to determine who is to
be subjected to brainwashing.
I hope that all people of conscience can pay attention to the harsh
persecution against the practitioners in China. The Chinese Communist
Party has utilized the entire nation's resources to persecute innocent
Falun Gong practitioners. They have written the darkest chapter in
China's history.

In late February of 2006, Zhang Mingqian and Wang Wei, director and
deputy director of the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp; Ma Jishan,
Management Section Leader; Su Jing, leader of the Masanjia Women's
Second District (the so-called "Thought Education School"); Wang Naimin
from the Political Committee; Li Mingyu and Xie Chendong, Leader and
Deputy Leader of the First Large Team; as well as Li Mingyu's husband,
Liu Yong, Section Leader of the Masanjia Labor Camp Protection Section,
jointly subjected all persevering practitioners "illegally imprisoned"
in the First Large Team to torture. Their methods included handcuffing,
beatings, and forcing the practitioners to sit on stools for long
periods of time. Each practitioner also had her prison clothes forcibly
put on by at least three or four male guards. Those who refused to
submit were brutally beaten.
Practitioners Ms. Sun Suxiang, Ms. Yuan Shuzhe, Ms. Yang Baoying, Ms.
Qiu Li, and others were all brutally beaten. Among them, Ms. Sun, Ms.
Qiu, Ms. Huang Sumei, Ms. Liu Guiyuan amd Ms. Zhang were confined to
small prison cells to be persecuted. In order to resist the
persecution, Ms. Qiu Li and Ms. Liu Guiyuan went on hunger strikes. On
March 22, 2006, Ms. Qiu, Ms. Liu, and Ms. Huang Sumei were moved out of
their individual small cells and imprisoned in three empty houses in
the First Large Team. Other practitioners imprisoned in these empty
houses include Ms. Zhou Hua, Ms. Meng, Ms. Guiqiu, Ms. Yuan Shuzhe, Ms.
Xie Xinying, and others. In order to resist the persecution, they have
all begun a hunger strike.
From 6 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. police guards handcuffed these
practitioners and forced them to stay in a squatting position almost
every day. The pressure on the practitioners' hands often resulted in
numbness and swelling. Some of their hands and legs became frozen. When
practitioners are asked to stretch out their hands, they have to
stretch their hands out straight or diagonally in the air. Sometimes
the guards force the practitioners to squat down for long periods and
don't allow them to stand, a very inhumane form of persecution. All
this is done while they are handcuffed to bed frames, unable to move.
Ms. Qiu Li, Ms. Liu Guiyuan, Ms. Huang Sumei, Ms. Meng Guiqiu, and Ms.
Zhou Hua were not allowed to wash themselves or even to change their
clothes for a month. They were be handcuffed everyday, even when they
went to sleep at night. On April 10, they were transferred out and illegally
detained in the Third Group of the Masanjia Labor Camp Women's
First District's First Large Team. For refusing to wear prison uniforms
in the Third Group, they were brutally beaten many times by
criminals Wang Liying and her gang. Much of their hair has been pulled
out. Even though the Team Leader Sun Mei was present, she refused to
stop the criminals from torturing the practitioners.
Currently, Ms. Qiu Li is still on a hunger strike. She has been
force-fed everyday and given injections, which cost 20 yuan per
bottle. They are force-fed corn porridge, salt, an egg, and small
amounts of sugar, yet it costs 20 yuan each time. Another practitioner
undergoing hunger strike is Ms. Jiang Chunxia from Dalian City. Ms.
Jiang has already been persecuted to the point where she cannot walk,
while Ms. Qiu Li can only stumble. Both of these women have become
severely emaciated.
Other practitioners imprisoned in the Masanjia Labor Camp include Ms.
Wang Xiuyan (Benxi City), Ms. Qu Shumei (Dalian City), and Ms. Xin
Shuhua.

Practitioner Ms. Li Xiaoyu persisted in her belief in Falun Gong. She was illegally sentenced to 10 years in prison. She is currently extremely weak and cannot care for herself unassisted.
(Photo of Li Xiaoyu)
Ms. Li, 36 years old, used to be a teacher at the Jiefangbeilu First
Elementary School. Since becoming a Falun Gong practitioner in 1997,
she did everything according to the principles of "Truthfulness,
Compassion, Forbearance." She was very attentive to her teaching job,
and her colleagues considered her to be a top teacher. Teachers at her
school said that the students in her class had the best discipline and
moral character.
Agents from the Lianxin Police Station in the Jinjiang District of
Chengdu City arrested Ms. Li in April 2002 when she was at a Falun Gong
materials production center. Two other practitioners were arrested at
the same time. They were Mr. Zhao Yong, 35 years old, who lived at
Group One, Chen Village, Jingshan Township in Bazhou District, Bazhong
City, Sichuan Province, and Mr. Min Qinjun, 30 years old, who lived at
#5 Gujinsi Road, Shaping Township, Ebian Yi Autonomous County, Leshan
City.
In July 2003, Jinjiang District Court officials held an illegal hearing
in which the three practitioners openly exposed Jiang Zemin's crimes in
persecuting Falun Gong. They each received a 10-year jail sentence.
Ms. Li Xiaoyu was steadfast in Falun Gong practice and suffered from
long-term persecution. The police frequently arrested and detained her.
She lost her job and the right to live a normal life and was often
harassed and intimidated by people from the Jinniu District Political
and Judiciary Committee. The persecution even extended to her young
son. Even a holiday gift, to which he was entitled, was withheld from
him.
According to an insider, because she refused to perform any forced
labor, Ms. Li endured very severe physical and mental trauma. Her face
was disfigured and swollen. She lost quite a few teeth from violence.
Ms. Li is extremely weak, and her situation is very critical.

Ms. Zhao Tingyun, 54 years old, was from
Xinxiang City, Henan Province. On January 6, 2006, the police arrested
her. Her home was then searched and her husband was arrested and
detained, as well. Section head Qian from the Muye Police Branch of
Xinxiang City led the police do this unlawful deed. At around 9:00 p.m.
on January 15, at a detention center, Xu Qiang, head of the Monitoring
and Supervision Branch of the Xinxiang Police Department, told Zhao
Tingyun's husband that Ms. Zhao died between 4:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.
that morning. He ordered Ms. Zhao's husband to sign the autopsy
authorization. Xu Qiang refused to let the family see the body first
and threatened that an inspection would not be accurate 12 hours after
death.
To seek justice in the death of his mother, Ms. Zhao's son, Liu Yan,
has been to all of the law offices in Xinxiang City but no one dared to
accept the case. He only option now is to appeal to the provincial
capital. Here is his Letter of Appeal:
Appellant: Liu Yan, 26, son of Zhao Tingyun. Lives in the Bus Factory's
residential community, Tielu West of Xinxiang City. Phone number:
86-373-2162149
Pleadings:
1. Investigate how my mother died
2. Uphold justice and punish the murderers
The Facts:
My mother, Ms. Zhao Tingyun, 55, was a retiree from the Xinxiang Bus
Factory. On January 6, 2006, when she was visiting a friend, agents
from the Hongqi Police Branch of the Xinxiang Police Department
arrested and interrogated her in Dongfang Hotel in Xinxiang County. She
was then detained with a charge of "disturbing the social order." That
same day in the evening, Muye Police Branch section head Qian led more
than 10 policemen to break into my parents' home to conduct a search.
Later my father was arrested and sent to the No. 760 Factory guest
house. He was illegally
detained there for two days and three nights and then sent to the
municipal detention center. At around 9:00 p.m. on January 15 in the
detention center, Monitoring and Supervision Branch head Xu Qiang told
my father that my mother had died between 4:00 and 5:00 am. that
morning and ordered my father to sign the autopsy permission slip. My
father did not agree to sign but agreed to discuss the issue after my
mother's family viewed the body. Agent Xu Qiang didn't agree and
threatened that the exam would be inaccurate because death had occurred
12 hours before. My father had no recourse but to sign the permission
slip. They finally released my father the next morning.
At 9:00 a.m. on January 18, agent Xu Qiang came to my home and said the
cause of my mother's death was "collapse from hunger strike." My mother
was detained the afternoon of January 6 and was declared dead on the
morning of January 15. How could she have died of collapse due to a
hunger strike? We have many doubts. The officials then did not try to
explain to or comfort us. In fact many people, including those from the
Muye District municipality, the police department, and my mother's
workplace, came to my home in turn to advise and intimidate us to sign
the cremation permission, otherwise they would do it anyway.
We later repeatedly requested the written results of the autopsy
report. Xu Qiang, who was in charge of the case, stated that the
autopsy report was a legal document and the family was not privileged
to receive a written copy but was only entitled to an oral report. Xu
Qiang also intimidated us and said that the municipal procuratorial
court and the police department's Discipline Inspection Committee had
been involved and believed there were no violations.
To see my mother for the last time and provide a change of clean
clothes for her, we had asked the related offices and persons in charge
many times to permit us to do so. Finally, on January 27 we got
permission. When we arrived at the funeral home, dozens of police were
already there waiting for us. As it turned out, only four of us were
permitted to see her body. To cover up the fact that my mother had
suffered brutal beatings when she was alive, they already changed her
clothes and covered her with a set of old-style, big, loose clothing.
My mother's hair was messy. When we tried to put on makeup, we found
congealed blood on the left side of her neck. There was a five
centimeter-long wound behind her left ear and a strip of bloody bumps
on the back of the head. A hunger strike could never have caused these
injuries. They were wounds from being struck with a solid object. When
we asked to see the original clothes my mother had worn, Xu Qiang
hemmed and hawed and lied, and finally said to check with the Hongqi
Police Branch. Since our visit to determine my mother's cause of death
made the officials very uncomfortable, Xu Qiang refused many times to
accede to our family's right to view my mother's remains again.
On February 23, the police department agents notified us to come see
the autopsy report. It reported cavities in my mother's lung and
concluded that long-term malnutrition had caused her death.
From what we saw, the cause of my mother's death was not what the
report said.
First, before my mother was interrogated on January 14, she looked very
normal. When she was sent back, she kept vomiting blood and moaning
painfully. At night she experienced stiffness all over her body.
Second, if my mother's death was caused by "collapse from hunger
strike," how are the wounds on her head and her neck to be explained?
Third, if lung cavities caused her death, as it stated in the autopsy
report, it was the savage beatings that caused these internal injuries.
Several hours before my mother died, she was interrogated and subjected
to ruthless torture. It is likely that they subjected her to
force-feeding.
The above facts are convincing evidence that it was not a hunger strike
but the savage beating during interrogation or the force-feeding that
caused my mother's death.
To find justice for my mother's death, I have been to every law office,
but no one has dared to accept my case. I have no other recourse but to
appeal to the provincial capital and hope that you can give me a
satisfactory answer.

The thugs in the Lanzhou Women's Jail are
cruelly persecuting Falun Gong practitioners.
Falun Gong practitioner Lei Zhanxiang from Jinchang City, Gansu
Province, was transferred to the Lanzhou Women's Jail on April 26,
2006. On the morning of April 27, as soon as Lei arrived, the policemen
instigated two prisoners to beat her. They also deprived her of sleep
for three days and nights and forced her to watch the brainwashing
videos. Lei's face and shoulders was swollen from the beatings and her
eyes became reddish. The jail even forced her to take unknown drugs.
After taking these drugs the police forced her to protrude her tongue
for an examination, forbidding her from moving or using the washroom.
She suffered from abdominal pains after taking the drug.
The thugs, while forcing her to watch the relatives of Falun Gong
practitioners slandering Teacher and Falun Gong, said, "1. If you do
not
transform upon the completion of your term, we will let you die inside
the jail. 2. No bail will be granted to you till your death in the
jail. 3. The insiders have labeled Falun Gong as being
'counter-revolutionary.' They do not dare to kill Falun Gong
practitioners openly, but they will try to kill them secretly."
A fellow practitioner, name unknown, was persecuted to such an extent
that she needed the support of other persons to walk. Despite this, the
jail still denied her bail for treatment.

Wang Xi, a college professor at Shihezi
City Business College, Xinjiang, was illegally
arrested on January 5, 2004. Two months later she was sentenced to
seven years of imprisonment and detained in Xinjiang's No. 2 Jail in
Urumqi City. During the first two years in jail, Ms. Wang Xi's hands
were handcuffed between the bunked beds and she was not allowed to go
to bed until 2:00 a.m. every day. Then she was handcuffed again in the
same way beginning at 4:00 a.m. Her health seriously deteriorated due
to the long-term persecution. On May 10, 2006, Ms. Wang's family
members went to the jail to see her, since according to the regulation
set by the jail, there could be visits at three-month intervals. They
arrived there very early, but did not get the permit until 11:30 a.m.
Then a woman guard said they were not allowed to see her since Ms. Wang
violated jail regulations during the Labor Day holiday. Ms. Wang's
family pleaded with them, saying, "We live far away from here, so it is
not easy to get here. Please let us take a look at her!" But the guard
peremptorily said, "You can see her next time." Ms. Wang's family said
to her, "That would be three months later, what kind of regulation did
Wang Xi violate?" The guard responded impatiently, "You know what it
is!"
Wang Xi was illegally sentenced to two years of forced labor in 2001
and detained in Ulapo Forced Labor Camp.
In May of 2003, Wang Xi was released on medical parole. She lives a
very difficult life because she got divorced and lost her job. So she
asked to resume her previous work and sent a letter entitled "My
experience of illegal arrest and forced labor during the last four
years" to the responsible department to expose the inhuman treatment by
the authorities. This included such things as brutal beating,
handcuffing behind the back, sleep deprivation, forced feeding, and so
on. Because of this, Wang Xi was arrested again on January 5, 2004 and
sentenced to seven years of imprisonment in March of the same year.
Wang Xi appealed several times but never got a response.
Currently, Wang Xi's family members are very much worried about her
situation and her health.

1. Ms. Shi Xizhi
Ms. Shi Xizhi lived in Apartment 402, Building No. 2, Yinfu Community
Area, Kunming City, Yunnan Province. She was reported to police for
practicing Falun Gong and was arrested at home in April or May of 2003.
She was tried secretly and sentenced to four years in prison and
detained in the No. 2 Prison of Yunnan Province.
Late at night on March 8, 2005, the prison called Shi Xizhi's daughter
and informed her that Ms. Shi was in the Gongren Hospital, in critical
condition. The next morning, when her family members arrived at the
hospital, Shi Xizhi was already in a coma. She had been tortured and
suffered from the persecution for a long time. Ms. Shi was unable to
recover and died the early morning of March 17, 2005.
From the time Shi Xizhi was arrested until she died, her family members
didn't know what happened to her during that time. When Ms. Shi was
secretly tried and sentenced to prison, no one from her family was
permitted to attend the trial. When they visited her in prison, there
was always someone nearby to monitor them. Even when Ms. Shi was
comatose in the hospital, the police still stayed around to monitor
everyone. No one knows exactly how she suffered and died.
2. Mr. Lu Shilin
Mr. Lu Shilin, 69 years old, lived in Huangmei Town, Huangmei County.
He was the gatekeeper for the county department store outlet. He lived
alone in the outlet's courtyard. Since Mr. Lu began Falun Gong practice
in
1995, he improved greatly both physically and mentally. He was regarded
widely as a good man at the outlet. Since 1999, when the evildoers
started to persecute Falun Gong, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) kept
harassing him. His home was searched and his Falun Gong books were
taken
away. Mr. Lu was arrested and detained in the Huangmei Town Police
Station and in the No. 2 Huangmei Detention Center several times. In
2004, he was sent to a brainwashing center in Wuchang City, Hubei
Province and suffered a lot, both mentally and physically.
Early in the morning of March 10, 2006, some residents in the outlet's
courtyard heard a loud sound like a "bang" in the yard and a person
crying. Around 4:00 a.m., a driver found Mr. Lu lying face down on the
courtyard ground. There was a lot of blood around. His hat and shoes
were one meter away from his body. His relatives later found a big hole
in his forehead. The details need more investigation.
3. Ms. Liu Suzhi
Ms. Liu Suzhi, 57, lived in Dangba Town, Bingquan County, Hebei
Province. Before she practiced Falun Gong in 1998, she had multiple
diseases, which all disappeared after she began the practice. Since
1999, when Jiang's regime started persecuting Falun Gong, Ms. Liu's
family
members didn't support her practice, causing her to be unable to
regularly perform the exercises and read book. In
2004, her old heath problems returned. She died on October 6, 2005.
4. Ms. He Weixian
Ms. He Weixian, 61, lived at an oil company base in Chongqing City.
Someone threatened her in July 2001 for clarifying
the truth. She decided later to leave home and go from place to
place to avoid further persecution. On October 24, 2002, Ms. He was
sent to the Maojiashan Women's Forced Labor Camp in Chongqing City,
where they injected her with toxic substances that harm the central
nervous system. She was in constant pain since then. On October 13,
2004 Ms. He was released to go home, but the persecutors kept harassing
her. She died on April 24, 2006.
5. Ms. Wen Shuqiong
Ms. Wen Shuqiong, 68, lived at Chengbei Village, Wujing Town, Xinjing
County, Chengde City, Shichuan Province. Before she practiced Falun
Gong, she had many diseases including diabetes, nephritis, rheumatism,
cholecystitis, cataracts and other ailments. For years she had to
depend on medicine to sustain her life. Not long after Ms. Wen started
the practice in 1996, her health problems disappeared miraculously. In
March 2000, she went to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong.
She was
arrested and sent back to Xinjing County. She was detained for 45 days
and was fined 10,500 yuan. Her
home was searched. On June 30, 2000, the local officials arrested Wen
Shuqiong on the street. They were Chen Zichao and Chen Guihua from the
Wujing Town government, and the head of Chengbei Village, Lin Jun. Ms.
Wen was held in a detention center for 30 days. She was arrested again
in January 2002 when she clarified the truth in Qinglong Town, Pengshan
County. She was later sent back to Xinjing County, was fined 1,200 yuan
and sentenced to two years of forced labor, to be served at the Nanmusi
Women's Forced Labor Camp, Sichuan Province. In April 2002, Ms. Wen was
released on bail for medical treatment. She suffered a lot during
arrest and detention, and her health deteriorated. Ms. Wen Shuqiong
died in April 2006.
6. Mr. Xu Yunzhang
Mr. Xu Yunzhang, 61, was from Beijing. In 1995, he was diagnosed with
stomach cancer and underwent surgery. The doctor asserted that he could
live only for five years at most. In 1996, Mr. Xu began Falun Gong
practice
and recovered, becoming a normal, healthy person. He had appealed for
justice for Falun Gong many times, including taking part in the "April 25"
appeal in 1999. In 2000, local police agents detained Mr. Xu. For
several years, he kept clarifying the truth to people in his area and
suffered continuous harassment from the local residential committee,
from agents of the 610 Office,
and the police station. Mr. Xu's health deteriorated as a result of the
high pressure and threats during the long-term persecution. He died on
April 30, 2006.
