  • Practitioner Mr. Lin Shusen from Beijing on a Hunger Strike for Over One Year; Currently in Critical Condition

Mr. Lin Shusen, 32 years old, is a Falun Gong practitioner from Beijing. He was originally from Qing’an County, Heilongjiang Province. At the end of April 2005, he was illegally arrested. On January 23, 2006, the Xicheng District Court of Beijing "illegally sentenced" Mr. Lin to five years in prison because "in 2004, Lin used his real name to publish a Minghui/Clearwisdom website article, which revealed the persecution that he and other Falun Gong practitioners in Qianjin Prison suffered." (from "A Beijing Falun Gong Practitioner's Three Years of Abuse, Mistreatment, and Persecution in the Qianjin Prison," May 14, 2004, on Clearwisdom.net) Mr. Lin appealed, but the appeal was rejected.

At the end of May 2006, Lin Shusen was imprisoned in Beijing's second detention center—Xicheng Detention Center. He has now been transferred to another location. It was said that he was transferred to Daxing Dispatch Center. Currently, his whereabouts are unknown.

On April 28, 2005, after being arrested by policemen including Fang Ge from Xinjieko Police Station in the Xicheng District of Beijing, Lin Shusen started a hunger strike to protest the persecution and illegal detention. The hunger strike has lasted for more than one year. During this period of time, Mr. Lin's family members tried to visit him, but they never had a chance to see him in person. While he was in the Seventh Division of Beijing City Police Department, Mr. Lin exhibited signs of renal failure due to his long-term hunger strike. Therefore, he was transferred to Beijing Police Hospital for force-feeding. The authorities not only refused to release Lin Shusen, but also lied to his family members and told them that his condition was very good. Therefore, none of his family members knew that he was on a hunger strike.

Before June 14, 2006, Lin Shusen’s family members had lost contact with him for half a month. When his family members contacted the dispatch center and asked for Lin Shusen, a worker told them that there was no such person. However, the responsible person at Xicheng Detention Center was very sure that he was imprisoned at the dispatch center. In general, the dispatch center should inform a prisoner’s family members within five days after a prisoner arrives. Currently, more than two weeks have gone by since the family last heard from Lin Shusen.

From 2001 to 2003, Mr. Lin was persecuted in Qianjin Prison located in Tianjin. He was forced to run around a basketball court 100 times per day. His energy was drained from being handcuffed with his arms behind his back. He was made to sit on a small stool, which was only 10 centimeters high, for 15 to 16 hours per day. He was deprived of sleep for 15 consecutive days. He was shocked by 11 electric batons at the same time. He was forced to wear "strait jackets" and was tied on the death bed for seven months. Finally, he was tortured for seven months—until he became mentally disordered. Officials used the article, "A Beijing Falun Gong Practitioner's Three Years of Abuse, Mistreatment, and Persecution in the Qianjin Prison" as "evidence" to sentence Lin Shusen to prison.

Young Teacher Dies after Suffering Cruel Torture at Jinzhou City Labor Camp in Liaoning Province

Mr. Zuo Zhongyou was a young teacher at the Dayubu Middle School, Yi County, Jinzhou City, Liaoning Province. He was twice sent to a forced labor camp for his belief in Falun Gong. After long-term abuse and persecution, he suffered a great deal of physical and mental trauma. His heart, lungs and kidneys deteriorated and he suffered brain damage. Zuo Zhongyou passed away on May 29, 2006.

Zuo Zhongyou was 36 year old. He began to practice Falun Gong in 1997. Since 1999, when the evil Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began to persecute Falun Gong, Zuo Zhongyou and his family members made several trips to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong. He was incarcerated in the Yi County Detention Center in October 1999 and was later sentenced to two years of forced labor. In late March 2000, Mr. Zuo escaped from the labor camp and went back to Beijing again to appeal. Unfortunately, he was arrested at the Xingcheng Railway Station and brought back to the labor camp.

Zuo Zhongyou was first detained in a small cell at Jinzhou Forced Labor Camp for seven days. Later he returned to the camp's Team Six. Guards Liu Huaizhong and Xu Guangquan cruelly tortured him. They first kicked him hard. Later they shocked his back, neck and other places with two electric batons. His skin was severely burned for days. During the day, he was forced to work wearing handcuffs; at night he slept with handcuffs on. The guards assigned him extra work and often verbally abused him.

On October 12, 2000, former political commissar Zhang Haiping and deputy head Jin Fuli ordered team leader Liu Tielin and some criminal inmates to attack several Falun Gong practitioners using electric batons. The victims included Zuo Zhongyou, Liu Yongsheng and Shi Zhongyan. Afterwards, guards Zhang Haiping, Jin Fuli, section chief Chen Ligang and the No. 2 Team leader Han Lihua launched a brainwashing session to try to force Falun Gong practitioners to give up Falun Gong. They made practitioners wear a safety helmet, handcuffed them and then made them sit at a corner table. Two guards and one common inmate were assigned to monitor each practitioner. They were forbidden to sleep or even sit down and were forced to watch videotapes of fabricated lies about Falun Gong. If a practitioner closed his eyes, lowered his head, or showed any sign to resist the program, the guards and inmates would not hesitate to hit their head with a stick, or shock the head, as well as the face, genitals, stomach and the rest the body. They even tied people to a metal chair for the whole day.

To protest the persecution, Zuo Zhongyou and several other practitioners went on a hunger strike. The guards and some criminal inmates subjected them to force-feeding, not out of concern for their lives, but as a torture method. The solution they fed the practitioners consisted of very salty corn meal gruel. They also forbade Mr. Zuo to sleep. All the hunger strikers were forced to sit on a small stool continuously for 44 hours. Subsequently, the stool-sitting torture became a 20-hour-a-day daily routine, from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. Anyone daring to challenge the torture was handcuffed to the stool. When camp doctor Chen subjected Zuo Zhongyou to force-feeding, he used a hard tool to pry open his mouth and damaged Zuo Zhongyou's teeth. If Zuo Zhongyou refused to open his mouth, Chen would use his fist as a "drill" to twist his face. After a one-month hunger strike, Zuo Zhongyou became emaciated and his blood pressure dropped very low. His leg suffered from edema. Doctors in the Jinzhou Labor Camp were afraid he might die on their hands, so they invited the chief of the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp Hospital to see him. That doctor said, "He is ok. We have someone in Masanjia who went on a hunger strike for 80 days." Zuo Zhongyou compromised with the evil under the severe persecution, the pain and the huge mental pressure, and was thus released on April 25, 2001.

In October 2001, Zuo Zhongyou was arrested again after he openly said, "Falun Dafa is good." He protested the subsequent arrest with a hunger strike again. Later he was sentenced to two years of forced labor and suffered tremendous tortures in the Jinzhou Forced Labor Camp. Compelled by the guards, three criminal inmates beat him badly. Once, the guards used four electric batons to shock him. They locked him in a small cell, forced him to sit on a metal stool and deprived him of sleep for a long time.

In July 2002, officials at the Jinzhou Forced Labor Camp started another round of ruthless persecution against steadfast Falun Gong practitioners. They called this action "psychological correction." Guards Yin Jiejin, Jiao Zhonghua and Zhang Huidong attacked Zuo Zhongyou violently. Zuo Zhongyou suffered severe injuries and his legs were badly swollen. Persecutor Yin Jiejin repeatedly threw punches at his chest 50 to 60 times, making his chest swell and leaving bruises that lasted more than ten days. It was too painful to touch. He didn't even dare cough. Zuo Zhongyou wore handcuffs for the following three months. He also had to sit on a stool for 15 hours a day, with only three bathroom breaks. This stool sitting torture lasted more than four months.

On the evening of March 31, 2003, guard Feng Zibin led a group of criminals to escort practitioners Li Zhongjie and Zuo Zhongyou to a small room on the second floor. When the others were watching TV, they stretched Li Zhongjie's arms apart with handcuffs to form a cross. Criminal inmate Guo Weibin said, "Now we have orders from higher up to beat them anyway we want." Then they started a round of unrestrained violence against Li Zhongjie and Zuo Zhongyou.

Despite the torture, this time Zuo Zhongyou refused to compromise. Before he was detained, he weighed 75 kg, but in the Jinzhou Forced Labor Camp he weighed only 45 kg (approximately 92 lbs); he was in critical condition. The labor camp feared that his physical condition may cost them money; or, if he died in custody, they would have to take responsibility. They sent him home in September 2003. By then Zuo Zhongyou vomited every day and coughed badly; even family members and friends could not recognize him after his release.

After he got home, the labor camp guards often harassed him by telephone. Before he had recovered his health, ten people from his school, including several leaders, came to his house to pressure him to give up Falun Gong. To avoid another detention or additional persecution, he escaped to his relative's house. By this time, Mr. Zuo had poor heart, kidney and lung functions following the long-term abuse under the persecution. He coughed frequently. He often felt disoriented, had trouble walking, and could not perform normally at work. Zuo Zhongyou died in the afternoon on May 29, 2006.

A Practitioner from Wuxue City, Hubei Province Recounts the Persecution She Suffered

My name is Rao Mianhua. I'm 41 years old now. I live in Group 3 in Jiangjialin Village, Wuxue Town, Wuxue City, Hubei Province. Before practicing Falun Gong, I suffered from a bad stomach, enteritis, and gynecological problems as a result of an induced abortion. I went to different doctors and spent large amounts of money, but nothing was effective. Hence, we were short of money, which caused many conflicts at home. Right when I was very miserable, I met a practitioner who introduced Falun Gong to me. Due to the severity of my illnesses, however, I was unable to let go of them and missed that first opportunity. In February 1997, I saw the same practitioner again who once again told me about Falun Gong. From then on, I have started to practice Falun Gong.

That practitioner took me to the practice site where we watched the videos of Teacher's lectures for several days. I felt very relaxed. After practicing for a period of time, all my illnesses disappeared. After that, the leaders of my village introduced several people to me to learn Falun Gong. Unfortunately, the relentless persecution soon started. The situation back then was very severe. The policemen from the Kanjiang local police station and the village leaders often came to my home to harass me. With several fellow practitioners, we went on our way to clarify the truth of Falun Gong to the public. The police illegally arrested us and detained us in a detention center for 13 days. I was released only after my family paid some money, an amount I still don't know. In November 1999, I practiced the Falun Gong exercises on a river bank and was illegally detained in the detention center again. I protested with a hunger strike for seven days, and my family paid some more money. I was released again.

In March 2000, the Kanjiang Police Station put me in the detention center once again. Because I refused to sign the guarantee statement to give up practicing Falun Gong, they beat me and handcuffed me with my arms behind my back for several hours. I was unable to eat or go to the toilet. The handcuffs left deep, bloody scars on my wrists. Fifteen days later, I paid 300 yuan and was let go.

In April 2000, I once again went to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong. I was detained by the police from the Qianmen Police Station for 24 hours. They asked for my name, but I did not tell them, so they beat me [Note:Because of the government policy of implicating and persecuting practitioners' family members and work units, practitioners often refuse to reveal their names when they are illegal arrested]. After that, they said that I did not waste my three-year practice at all. The next day, the police deceived me into telling them my home address. Kanjing Police Station officials had someone bring me back to Wuxue, where police officer Zou beat me and then detained me in the Detention Center for more than 40 days. During this time, the police from the Kanjiang Police Station broke into my residence and ransacked my home. They even took away my bed, rice cooker, steam cooker, the bathtub, and almost everything in my home.

Without any legal documents or procedures, the authorities sentenced me to one and a half years of forced labor and sent me to Shizishan Forced Labor Drug Addicts Rehab Camp in Wuhan, where I was physically tortured. I suffered from a torture called "Tieqiang" ("sticking onto the wall") and then "Waqiang"("digging the wall"). I was forced to squat down with my legs spread and curved, but not totally down. It was called the "Number 8 step." I had to do these moves repeatedly every day. After a month, I was forced to do hard labor. I got up at 5:30 a.m., and went to bed between midnight and 3:00 a.m. In September I was finally allowed to go home.

In October, policemen Zou and Cai from the Kanjiang Police Station dragged me to their police car and again took me to Shizishan Forced Labor Drug Addicts Rehab Camp in Wuhan City. The leaders in that camp got a 10,000-yuan bonus if they "reformed" a Falun Gong practitioner. Hence, they treated practitioners very cruelly. Practitioners were forced to take cold water showers in all seasons, summer or winter. On one occasion, the section head, Jiang, locked up all of the practitioners together. Our hands were all cuffed together behind our backs. After that, one by one, we were taken to the guard chamber to be shocked with electric batons. I felt numb after being shocked. Then we had to do strenuous military training. We had to do parade steps and hold our legs up for 15 minutes. We would be beaten if we stepped on the ground. The temperature then was nearly 40 degrees Celsius in Wuhan, which is nicknamed "Fire Stove" because it is so hot and humid the the summer. Immediately after the military training, before our sweat had dried, we were forced to shower in extremely cold well water.

After such long-term persecution, my feet could not move anymore. I was disabled and had to use a wheelchair. Then the police took me to the Military Hospital in Wuhan. The doctor told the police something which they would not let me hear. A few days later, on September 10, 2001, I was released before the end of my term. However, the police from Qinglin police station and the local National Security Bureau often came to my home and harassed me. My husband (who is not a practitioner) stood up for for me. The police then threatened him many times. They were about to put handcuffs on him. I lost my ability to work. Our two children still needed to go to school. My husband had to go to work out of town. The police still repeatedly came and harassed us.

On May 2005, Tian Shuiqing from Qinglin Police Station brought several policemen to our home. They broke into our residence and grabbed my children's reading machines. The children asked the police to return their reading machines. The police then threatened the children. I repeatedly requested the return of the machines, but the police would not return them. In June 2005, I went to Qinglin Police Station to ask the police to return the reading machines. The police told me to go to the city's CCP committee to get them back, but the personnel there told me to go to the police department. I went there and met the head of the 610 Office, Pan Linfa. I asked for the return of the reading machines and the payment of our basic living costs. They told me to return the next day. When I went there again the next day, they told me that they would not return the reading machines and said that they were not responsible for my basic living costs. On the third day, I went again. I found Wang Shaozhai. He lied to me and told me to go inside another room to get the reading machines. Actually, he wanted to lock me up again. After I saw his intention, I rolled my wheelchair trying to get out. They immediately grabbed my wheelchair. I then crawled on the floor. They still would not let me leave, but pushed me over onto the floor. Then they carried me to the police car. I refused to get into their car by leaving my feet and head out of the car. Seeing this, they immobilized my head and feet with the car door. They drove me to the detention center and took me out of the car. I sat on the ground. Police officer Dong slapped me twice. Two nights later, they took me home, but my parents-in-law would not take me in. The chief of the detention center, Liu Tangyi, and policeman Wang carried me out of the car and ran away. My in-laws took me to the home of policeman Tian Shuiqing, who called 110 (an emergency number, similar to 911 in the United States). The 110 authorities then took me home again, but my in-laws still would not let me come in. Then the 110 office took me to the detention center. The next day, the chief lied to me and said that the Municipal authorities and Wuxue Town both had someone waiting to see me at the local Communist Party Branch Office. When I got there, I only saw one village leader, who ordered people from Wuxue Town to send someone to get me. The Wuxue Town personnel did not want to take responsibility for me, which caused me to become homeless and destitute for several days. Eventually, my mother in law let me go home.

Recent Information about the Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioners in Maojiashan Women's Forced Labor Camp in Chongqing

Currently, there are about seventy Falun Gong practitioners being illegally detained in the Maojiashan Women's Forced Labor Camp in Chongqing. The following is information about the persecution taking place there:

    I. The 4th Group

    1. The 4th Group of the Maojiashan Women's Forced Labor Camp in Chongqing has been set up especially for persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. The 1st Team (on the second floor) of the 4th Group is filled with practitioners. Drug addicts act as "package clamps" and "personal cangues" [Note: cangue is the name of an instrument of torture; it is now used to indicate the person designated to supervise practitioners]. The 2nd Team (on the third floor) contains mainly drug addicts who are used as a backup force for persecuting practitioners. The guards and the "personal cangues" conduct torture in five small rooms (they are called the two back rooms, the 2nd room, the 3rd room and the 4th room). Currently the five small rooms are filled with Falun Gong practitioners. If the five rooms do not provide enough capacity, the guards will open up another room.

The guards set up a "Beat Die-Hard Team," with the responsibility of planning and carrying out the tortures in the five rooms. The guards who are involved in the "Beat Die-Hard Team" are the following:

    1) Su Chang (Police ID#: 5032050), in her forties. She is the head of the 4th Group, and very enthusiastic about persecuting practitioners.

    2) Hu Xiaoyan (Police ID#: 5032130), age 27, is a deputy head of the 4th Group. She was recently promoted and works really hard. She wants to gain more notoriety than Su Chang. (Background information: she graduated from the Department of Literature, Chongqing Teacher’s College in either 2000 or 2001. She lives at the Chongqing Teacher’s College, near Shaping Park.)

    3) Tan Qingyue (Police ID#: 5032125), in her thirties, is a deputy head of the 4th Group.

    4) Dai Wenjuan (Police ID#: 5032135), in her thirties, is also a deputy head of the 4th Group.

    5) Chen Yanyan (Police ID#: 5032193), age 27, the head of the 1st Team under the 4th Group. She once studied law in the Chongqing Police School. Although she is pretty and charming, she has worked outside the law, viciously persecuting good people in secret. She is completely indoctrinated by the Chinese Communist Party. Last year, Chen traveled abroad in order to investigate Falun Gong. This year she attempted to go overseas again (practitioners should be careful, Chen Yanyan may act as a communist party spy). She has done many evil things in the Chongqing brainwashing center.

    6) Chen Xiaoqin (Police ID#: 5032159), age 27, is the head of the "Beat Die-Hard Team," 1st Team under the 4th Group. She once went to Chongqing University to study law. As a part of the "Beat Die-Hard Team," she is responsible for planning and conducting the torture of Falun Gong practitioners.

    7) Gao Hong (Police ID#: 5032084), age 28. In the second half of the year 2005, she retired from the military (possibly the 13th Troop) and changed her career. As the head of the "Beat Die-Hard Team," 1st Team under the 4th Group, she works really hard to flatter the Chinese Communist Party.

Practitioner Mr. Deng Weinan from Heilongjiang Province Was Persecuted to Death in 2001

Practitioner Mr. Deng Weinan, previously called Deng Weiguo, was from Qianchanglinzi, Wuxing Village, Lincheng Township, Bayan County, Heilongjiang Province. In August 2001, he was tortured to death in Daoli District Police Department of Harbin City.

Around 8:00 p.m. on July 31, 2001, a gang of policemen from Harbin City and Bayan County illegally arrested Mr. Deng in his rented apartment. He was brought to the Falun Gong special task team on the twelfth floor of Daoli District Police Department. On the morning of August 1, Mr. Deng was tortured to death. The police announced to the public that he had committed suicide by jumping out of a window and incinerated his corpse hurriedly. Mr. Deng was only 26 years old.

Mr. Deng Weinan was afflicted with many diseases since he was young. He was previously diagnosed with septicaemia and was miraculously cured after starting to practice Falun Gong in 1995. He was a laborer in Harbin City. After the persecution began on July 20, 1999, Mr. Deng was arrested on several occasions by the local police. He was imprisoned, threatened, and persecuted.

In October 1999, Mr. Deng went to Beijing with fellow practitioners from Harbin City in order to appeal for justice for Falun Gong, but was arrested by policemen from the Dalan Police Station at their hotel in Beijing. Zhang Xuedong, chief of the Lincheng Village Police Station in Bayan County, Heilongjiang Province, extorted the village government where Deng resided out of 5,500 yuan in "transport costs" to go fetch Mr. Deng. Furthermore, while Deng Weinan was imprisoned in Bayan County, Zhang lead a gang of police to extort 3,000 yuan in cash from Mr. Deng's family without providing any warrants.

In the summer of 2000, Mr. Deng was returning home from Harbin City but was arrested in Wuxing Village by Lincheng Police Station policeman "Xing" (the officer's real name is not known; he is the third son in his family) and taken to the Bayan Police Station once again. He was imprisoned for another two and a half months. Thereafter, these gangs of police constantly went to Mr. Deng's home to harass his family, causing his parents to live in constant fear and terror.

On the eve of July 20, 2000, Mr. Deng was once again arrested and imprisoned, this time for more than three months.

On July 31, 2001, not long after Deng Weinan went to two fellow practitioner's rental apartments in the Nan'gang District, more than 10 police broke in and arrested all three practitioners and took them to the Daoli Police Station where they were imprisoned. The next morning the police announced that Mr. Deng had jumped off the building.

On August 3, 2001, Zhang Xuedong from the Lincheng Village Police Station drove to Deng Weinan's house once again saying that Mr. Deng was requesting to see his father and brother. His family had already sensed that something had gone wrong by then. Bureau Chief Tang and another man surnamed Wu from Bayan County Police Department brought Mr. Deng's relatives to the Daoli District Police Department's Office and pointed at the window from which Mr. Deng had supposedly jumped. The window was on the twelfth floor and anyone who jumped would surely have broken all of his or her bones. However, when Deng's family members asked to see Mr. Deng's body, the policemen refused them, using all sorts of excuses.

That afternoon, police officer Zhang Shusen brought Mr. Deng's relatives to the Yaziquan Detention Center in Gu Township, Harbin City. They said that they would only allow them to see Mr. Deng's body for a quick second just to confirm his identity. When the worker pulled out a large drawer with Mr. Deng's body inside, his relatives saw that his body was totally intact. Only his head was covered in a black plastic bag. After opening the bag, they saw that it was Mr. Deng and noticed that there were no bruises at all on his face. However, pieces of bone at the back of his skull had caved in and his clothes were gone. His family members became suspicious: it does not make sense to only break the back of one's skull after jumping down from the twelfth floor. However, the policemen dragged the family out of the room without allowing them another look.

On August 6, Mr. Deng's family members picked up a notification letter to cremate Mr. Deng's body. The notice had been thrown into their backyard by a policeman. The next day, the county and village police station drove a car to attend Mr. Deng's autopsy.

At a heavily guarded location, many policemen and forensic personnel crowded around Mr. Deng's body, listing his injuries, but they did not allow his relatives to get close to see the body at all. His relatives were even prohibited from crying.

After the autopsy, the police covered Mr. Deng's body in a large plastic bag and threw it onto the car before driving off in a hurry. Mr. Deng's mother fainted, and her relatives hurriedly tried to revive her. She came to after all the policemen and forensic personnel had gone.

The policemen known to have participated in the persecution of Deng Weinan include Li Jun from Bayan County, as well as Guan Xin, Liu Gang, Yuan Weijie, and Chen Weijie from Daoli District, Harbin City,
