Ms. Zong Xiuxia Dies Suddenly under Police Custody on February 22, 2008
On February 22, 2008, Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zong Xiuxia was arrested, and she died on the same day. Her body has been frozen, and details are yet to be investigated.
Ms. Zong Xiuxia lived in the Fangzi District in Weifang City, Shandong Province. On February 22, 2008, she went shopping at the Jialejia Supermarket. She kindly clarified the truth to people on her way, and as a result she was forcibly taken to the Guangwen Police Station in Kuiwen District at around 11:30 a.m. Police from the Guangwen Station said they took Ms. Zong to the Weifang City People's Hospital for a physical check-up at around 1:00 p.m. However, Ms. Zong died at 3:00 p.m.
It was 9:00 p.m. when the police notified her family, saying they had found her checkbook in her handbag and thus found her address and name. The police claimed that Ms. Zong died from jumping out of the elevator in the hospital.
Ms. Qi Jinling in Serious Condition after Severe Beating at Qianjin Forced Labor Camp
Ms. Qi Jinling, 48 years old, a Falun Gong practitioner from Xianfeng Village, Xinhua District, Acheng City, Heilongjiang Province, was imprisoned in Qianjin Forced Labor Camp located in Xinnong Town, Harbin City. She was beaten severely by Cong Zhilai, the instructor of the camp. Her head was injured and she couldn't care take of herself. The camp has shown indifference to the assault and no actions have been taken to punish the perpetrator.
At about 5:30 P.M. on January 21, 2008, after dinner, Cong Zhilai called Ms. Qi to her office and searched her pockets. Finding nothing, she forced her to take off her shoes and pants in front of two other instructors, Wang Xiaowei and Wang Meiying. Ms. Qi did not follow their orders and was immediately reprimanded and sent back to the prison cell. When she was called back again, she asked, "Search the pocket again?" Cong didn't clearly hear what she said and thought she was cursing her. She asked Ms. Qi why she cursed her. Cong took her upstairs and forced her to confess that she scolded her and in the presence of Wang Xiaowei and Wang Meiying, demanded an apology. She denied the scolding. Furious, Cong fiercely slapped her face until she fell to the floor. No one tried to stop her. Though not at fault, Ms. Qi was punished by being made to stand in the room until midnight.
Because Wang Xiaowei overlooked Cong's criminal acts, things became worse. Ten days later, at about 6:00 A.M., Cong ordered the assistant counselor named Li Yingjie to seize Ms. Qi while she was brushing her teeth. Cong took her upstairs. With a provocative tone, she asked Ms. Qi, "How are you doing these days?" Ms. Qi said, "Nothing is good as long as I stay in a place like this." Cong said, "Why did you scold me last time?" Ms. Qi said, "I didn't". Without saying much more, she started kicking her belly. She told her, "Beating me is a violation of the Sixth Article." Not listening, she continued and kicked even harder. Ms. Qi told her, "Stop! It is not good for you!"
Cong didn't listen to her and was mad. She knocked her down to the floor, and smacked her head against the wall, giving a huge blow to her forehead. Zhou Yingfan, another instructor, heard the noise and came over to see what had happened. During dinnertime, Zhou took Ms Qi to the workshop. Since then, she has suffered from headache, nausea, vomiting, and she can't eat anything. Wang Xiaowei, the watch supervisor, was very insolent and didn't allow Ms. Qi to talk to others.
Ms. Qi was suffering serious headache, nausea, and vomiting. She couldn't even drink water. A prison doctor named Sun was called in to examine her that night. She told him of the incident. Sun measured her blood pressure and stroked her head, "It's not a big deal. You'll be fine in two days."
On February 1, another prison doctor, Liu, came to see Ms. Qi. The instructor, Zhao Shuang, said, "Isn't it just a little blow? What's the big deal?" Liu shook his head and said, "It isn't. It's quite serious." Ms. Qi was still suffering from headache, nausea and vomiting.
On February 2, another prison doctor Wang, who always treated Falun Gong practitioners viciously, was on duty. He told Ms. Qi, "It's not a big deal." (Wang treated Falun Gong practitioners very viciously)
On February 4, Ms. Qi was still in bed because of the injury. She couldn't take care of herself. Because some higher officials from the provincial level came to examine the Center's security capacity, Ms. Qi was hidden in the north cabin. Huo Shuping threatened her and said after the third day of the New Year, she must return to do slavery labor or her detention period would be extended. In 2007, due to poor health, Ms. Qi was not able to labor much and her detention period was extended 17 days.
Forty-seven Falun Gong practitioners are illegally detained in Qianjin Women's Forced Labor Camp.
