Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Li Guifang from Xuhui District, Shanghai, was illegally arrested on April 23, 2009. At present, she is detained at the Xuhui District Detention Center.
On October 21, 2008, the personnel and police from the 610 Office and Baoshan District Police Precinct broke into her house and arrested her. They also took away Falun Gong books, a computer, and several thousand in yuan bills that had facts about Falun Gong written on them. She was jailed in Baoshan Detention Center.
That same evening, Ms. Li showed serious symptoms of heart disease and was taken to the nearby hospital. The nurse tried to inject her with drugs but was not able to. The medical personnel could not do anything about her symptoms, so they sent her back to the detention center. Later, the police took her to the General Hospital of Nanhui Prison. Ms. Li suffered tremendously during her detention. The police intimidated her with threats and applied high-pressure interrogation techniques on her. Twenty-eight days later, they released her on medical parole and transferred the case to Xuhui District Precinct for putting her under surveillance.
Once the police in Xuhui District took over her case, they constantly went to harass her. The police banged on the door and claimed that those under custody must show up whenever they were notified, or they would be arrested again. The threats made her family very anxious.
On April 23 evening, the neighborhood CCP secretary conducted a stakeout outside of her home, in order to prevent her from escaping. On April 24, the police tempted her out of the house and arrested her. They searched her house again and took her computer, books, and other personal belongings.
It has been over five months since Ms. Li was arrested. The family has not heard from her and are not allowed to bring her money or any necessary items. When Ms. Li's family went to the precinct to inquire about her situation, the police replied, "You guys may just await her sentencing!"
The family also went to the detention center, but could not obtain any information.
