  • Savage Abuse of A Practitioner in Her 60's in Zigong Prison, Sichuan Province

The following incidents occurred in Zigong Prison in Sichuan Province.

In late May 2003, the authorities started to incarcerate Falun Gong practitioners in Zigong Prison. Between July and August 2003, Mr. Zhang Liujun, who is in his 60s, from Qingbai Jiang, was imprisoned there. While the authorities were videotaping everyone, this older man declared that he was practicing "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance," and was therefore innocent. He didn't want them to videotape him as a criminal prisoner. The prison guards restrained Mr. Zhang on the punishment bed for about 20 days. They intimidated this older man, who was promoting his mind toward compassion, to acknowledge guilt and admit that he deserved to be punished. In or around November 2003, as Mr. Zhang was passing a gate, he clarified the truth to the staff, telling them that Falun Gong practitioners were innocent, that they were treated unjustly, and that Falun Dafa is great. He was again confined to the punishment bed for about a month.

Because his arms and legs were handcuffed to the metal bed he couldn't avoid the biting mosquitoes. His clothing was drenched with sweat, then dried and became soaked again, again and again. His clothing wasn't washed for three weeks. He was not allowed to wash his face or drink water, and had only a few cold steamed buns each day. During working hours, four or five policemen took turns interrogating him. They forced him to listen to the lies which they themselves didn't even believe, and they forced him to write false information according to their fabricated propaganda so that they could use these documents to get rewards. Six or seven criminal prisoners monitored him in turn. In order to reduce their sentences, these criminal prisoners insulted and tortured him at will.

If a Falun Gong practitioner wrote an acknowledgement of guilt, the criminal prisoners could get credit to reduce their sentences. They sought to do this by subjecting the practitioners to severe mental torment, insulting their characters, beating them and threatening them. In particular, they wanted this over 60-year-old man to compile an essay "exposing and criticizing" Falun Gong in order to confuse the public. Principles that Falun Gong practitioners believe, such as "Good is rewarded with good and evil provokes retribution," they scoffed at. These techniques are what they claim constitute their "reform education."

It was stated in a government officials' report that this type of prison violence was "reform education" for the Falun Gong practitioners. They claimed that the criminal activities and unjust actions against the practitioners were legitimate. A prison guard whose nickname was "Principal Yang" said it more directly, "Even if we torment or torture one or two of you to death here, it would not impact the officials or the prison. We can just issue a report stating that you died of an accident during work or died of illness."

The practitioners are strictly forbidden to have any conversation with others in the prison. Each practitioner is closely monitored by three criminal prisoners around the clock. Any move such as a glance, a hand gesture or even just extending one's leg could be berated as Falun Gong practice. From all appearances it looked like the practitioners didn't do much labor, yet they were subjected to wrongful treatment. The purpose was to force the practitioners to follow the prison guards' orders to write false statements defaming Falun Gong. One official said, "If you don't write this, we won't be selected as a model prison and won't get a bonus." They frequently used the false statements and lies to deceive people.

In January 2004, Mr. Zhang Liujun, who was severely punished for writing "Falun Dafa is Great!" on the wall and declaring that the practice of Falun Gong was non-criminal, was once again imprisoned. He was handcuffed to the punishment bed for about two months and was monitored by six or seven criminal prisoners. Three or four officers interrogated him in turn every day. They verbally abused him during the daytime, and the criminal prisoners abused him in the evening. One criminal prisoner said that many "real men" feared the punishment bed, yet this over 60-year-old man still didn't collapse after being handcuffed on it for about two months. It looked indeed like Falun Gong was the righteous law! He was really admired!

In these years since Zigong Prison has incarcerated practitioners, several practitioners have suffered the gross abuse of being handcuffed on the punishment bed.  Now all the practitioners confined in Zigong Prison solemnly declare to the world and to all the people: "We are determined Falun Gong practitioners. Falun Dafa is Righteous. We declare invalid all the written statements and deeds not reflecting the true facts of Falun Gong that we may have written or signed with unclear minds under intense persecution. We appeal to everyone: Do not believe any slanderous or false information of any kind against Falun Gong. In the meantime, we ask that all kind and concerned people pay attention to, condemn, and stop Zigong Prison's brutal persecution toward Falun Gong practitioners."

Some of the practitioners who have been held in Zigong Prison include: Zhang Liujun, Zhang Deqing, Zhong Young, Liu Kejin, Fan Chengjun, Guo Baoshan, Liu Xueming, Lin Deming, Xu Changzheng (released), Zhang Zhigang (released), Mr./Ms. Hu, and Mr./Ms. Yan.

In addition, around May 2004, an over 50-year-old Falun Gong practitioner (name not yet known) was arrested and taken to the Zi Zhong Detention Center. Refusing to write the three statements, this practitioner was shackled in steel chains to the punishment bed, suffered forced feeding after a hunger strike, and was beaten and verbally abused during the night by the criminal prisoners who were given orders by the prison guards. Fifteen days later this practitioner was sent to a hospital and died.

Mr. Pu Fanwei Tortured to the Verge of Death in Daqing Prison

Within three months, three practitioners were persecuted to death in Daqing Prison, including Xu Jishan, Wang Hongde and Yuan Qingjiang. Although they just passed away recently, the brutality in Daqing Prison still continues. Mr. Pu Fanwei, a 26-year-old practitioner from Gannan County, has been tortured to extreme emaciation, and is in a life-threatening situation. Things have gotten even worse recently. His blood pressure has dropped to 40 over 70, his stools have turned black, he is barely able to breathe, and he often lapses into a coma. In spite of his condition, prison officials refuse to release him and continue to torture him.

Mr. Pu started to practice Falun Gong when he was a teenager. He always thinks of other people first, and everyone likes him. When Falun Gong was first persecuted in 1999, 20-year-old Mr. Pu went several times to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. As a result, he was persecuted and detained. So far, he has been detained for four-and-a-half years and is on the verge of death.

Evil will always receive retribution. In mid-July, the Daqing City Deputy Secretary and the Discipline Committee Director, Si Jiaxiang, who was in charge of persecuting Falun Gong, died in a car accident. He had been implementing Jiang Zemin's policy toward Falun Gong practitioners, "to bankrupt them financially, to defame them politically, and to eliminate them physically." He ignored practitioners' kindness and warnings, which resulted in his death.

I Witnessed Ms. Gao Rongrong Being Tortured in Longshan Forced Labor Camp

I was illegally detained in the second team of Longshan Forced Labor Camp along with Ms. Gao Rongrong. On May 7, 2004, police guard Tang Yubao destroyed Ms. Gao's face by shocking her with an electric baton. One day before that day, all the guards from the second team suddenly broke into the cells. Tang Yubao ordered all prisoners to the aisle for a meeting. Ms. Gao didn't come out because of her bad health, so several team leaders forced her out. Female guard Liang Zhen shouted, "Handcuff her!" Tang Yubao took an electric baton and rushed at Ms. Gao. He grabbed her hair, pulled her out of the bed, and pushed her into the aisle. Before Ms. Gao was able to get her balance, Tang Yubao started to hit her face from both sides. He then grabbed her by her hair and hit her head on the table and the wall. Practitioner Sun Yan from Dalian Province tried to pull them apart and was also beaten.

Because Ms. Gao Rongrong was subjected to such severe persecution, her health was so bad that she could not work at hard labor. However, the police guard would not let her rest and forced her to go to the labor site even though she could only sit there. Inmate Bi Shuhua was responsible for watching Ms. Gao. When she saw Ms. Gao talking to other practitioners, she cursed violently for as long as they spoke. This was a torture to Ms. Gao both mentally and physically. Female guard Wang Chunmei said, "Watch and manage her well for me. I'll take responsibility if anything happens." Under her command, Bi Shuhua tried as hard as she could to give Ms. Gao all kinds of trouble. She also pushed and beat Ms. Gao. The guard team leader pretended not to see this at all.

In Longshan Forced Labor Camp, Tang Yubao has beaten all the detained practitioners who firmly practice Falun Gong.

Supplemental Facts Regarding Li Baojie's Death

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Li Baojie, 33, suffered severe persecution and died as a result. Her family members cried until their tears ran dry. Her death caused her mother, who is in her 70s, to grieve terribly, leaving her in an emaciated condition after less than three months.

Ms. Li Baojie was unlawfully arrested and her home was searched and ransacked by authorities on May 25, 2004. She was sent to the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp on August 20, where she was persecuted until she was on the verge of death. She was sent to the First Hospital of Shenyang Medical University for emergency rescue on April 7, 2005. According to the medical examination and available records, she was in a coma when she was admitted to the hospital. She was diagnosed with a lung infection as well as respiratory acidosis. Around six o'clock that evening, her family numbers received a notice from the labor camp that Ms. Li was in critical condition, so they went to the Shenyang Medical University. The doctor requested that she undergo emergency surgery immediately and demanded that family members and the labor camp sign for the surgery.

At that time, the Team Leader, Xie, and other persons from the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp were at the site. Xie refused to sign and claimed that he needed to ask for his supervisor's instructions. However, Baojie's family members could not wait longer for the labor camp officials to sign, as Li Baojie's life was in danger.

At 3:00 a.m. on April 8, 2005, Team Leader Xie of the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp jeopardized Ms. Li's life by retiring to his police car to sleep. As a result, Ms. Li Baojie's family members also left the hospital.

At 6:00 a.m. on April 8, 2005, Li Baojie called to request to see her husband Pan Xueshu for the last time. After seeing her, it was obvious that she did not sleep for a whole night, and her health was extremely weak. The situation was very urgent.

Pan Xueshu asked Xie of the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp and the female commissar many times to sign for permission to perform the life-saving operation on Li Baojie, but he was ruthlessly refused.

Later, the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp decided that the family members should take Li Baojie home. To save his wife, Pan Xueshu rented an ambulance with an oxygen supply and took his wife to the Second Peoples Hospital of Panjin City for treatment.

Li Baojie passed away on the road ten kilometers away from her home. Her husband Pan Xueshu shouted desperately: "Baojie! Please wake up! You should not go!" Her mother cried out: "My child! Please wake up!"

All of the people present burst into tears. Li Baojie's sister was in a deep shock at that time. Her family members could not accept the sudden loss. The death of Li Baojie was directly caused by tortures administered by authorities from the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp and related policemen and guards. It was reported that the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp reimbursed the family members 4000 yuan as a financial aid.

Notes: On the evening of May 25, 2005, Zhou Laixing, head of the 610 Office at Panjin City Police Station, led a team to illegally search and loot Li Baojie and Pan Xueshu's house. The police stole their spousal fund of 20,000 yuan in cash. This money was scraped together after a whole life's work by Pan Xueshu's parents. The items that were illegally confiscated include a suit with 500 yuan inside, a red one-piece dress, 2 sports suits, one quilt, one red carpet, one red suitcase with clothes inside, two new bed sheets, two pairs of sports shoes, two dining tables, one rice cooker, one spatula, one bag of rice, two aluminum kettles, one washtub, one red bucket, one thermos flask, a brand new bike, the ID card of Li Baojie, the receipt for a motorcycle, and a cabinet. All of the above items have not been returned yet. For more than two years, Pan Xuehu and his father demanded the money back from Zhou Laixing and Li Yonghua, however Zhou and Li responded by stalling and heading them off. More than two years later they still have not received any money back from the police.

Four Older Practitioners Die From Persecution in Hebei, Hunan and Jilin Provinces

Mr. Di Zhenjin, 78, was a Falun Gong practitioner in Kuancheng County, Hebei Province. He had previously suffered a stroke and was very frail in health. He quickly regained his health after practicing Falun Gong in March 1997. He did not feel tired after working, and felt like a young man again. After the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Jiang's regime started persecuting Falun Gong on July 20, 1999, the police often broke into and ransacked his home, confiscating Falun Gong books and harassing him and his family. Di Zhenjin persisted in clarifying the truth to people and appealing for Falun Gong. In May 2002, around a dozen deputies from the Kuancheng County Public Security Bureau and the Tangdaohe Township Police Station suddenly broke into his house, ransacked the rooms, seized the books and truth clarification materials, and arrested Zhenjin, taking him to the township police station for interrogations. They detained him at the detention center afterwards for further torture. Zhenjin suffered severe mental duress, followed by abdominal pain and blood in his stools. Under constant harassment, surveillance and coercion, he died on July 21, 2005.

    Zhou Shuying

Ms. Zhou Shuying, 84, lived at #124 building, The Jiangdong District 165th Hospital of Hengyang City, Hunan Province. She suffered from seven ailments, including high blood pressure and heart disease, among other symptoms. After she started practicing Falun Gong in June 1998, all of her illnesses disappeared. After the evil CCP and Jiang's regime started persecuting Falun Gong in July 1999, she and her daughter went to Beijing to appeal against the persecution and to tell the truth in October 2000. They were abducted by the police while they spoke out for Falun Gong on Tiananmen Square. After they were released her daughter was abducted and taken again to the brainwashing class for an entire year, and Ms. Zhou lost her practice environment. Later, on many occasions, her daughter was arrested and taken to the local detention center, and the 610 Office officials at the Zhuhui District Police Station ransacked her home and confiscated all her Falun Gong books, lectures and practice tapes. Under these ordeals and high pressure persecution tactics her old ailments recurred. She died on May 12, 2003.

Mr. Dong Jinchang, 60, was a Falun Gong practitioner from Yumin Village, Yushu City, Jilin Province. The local officials arrested him back in September 2002, and savagely beat him at the local police station that day. He lost consciousness several times during the beating, and was later transferred to the Yushu City Detention Center. He frequently suffered brutal tortures at the detention center. He was released only after his physical condition deteriorated severely and the center officials were afraid that they would be held accountable. He never regained his health after returning home, and died around mid-July 2005.

Mr. Zhang Zhiyong, 69, was from Nanwazhai Village, Laishui County, Hebei Province. After the CCP started persecuting Falun Gong in 1999, the county, township and local officials abducted his daughter and son, both Falun Gong practitioners. On top of that, those officials often came to his house to harass and terrorize him. Unable to cope with such peril, he died in September 2000.

Five Practitioners from Hebei, Liaoning, and Sichuan Provinces Die Due to Persecution of Falun Gong

Ms. Liu Huamiao, 57, was a Falun Gong practitioner from Xinji City, Hebei Province. Before practicing Falun Gong, she had severe rheumatism and could not take care of herself. In 1999, three months after she started practicing Falun Gong, she gained a new life. When the persecution of Falun Gong began, she went to Beijing to defend her practice of Falun Gong and was detained for over fifteen days. Due to the long-term constant harassment and persecution, her previous illness recurred. She died in spring of 2004.

Ms. Gu Xiaopin, 56, was a practitioner from Xinji City, Hebei Province. Before practicing Falun Gong, she had severe heart disease. After she learned Falun Gong in 1997, she became very healthy and gained a new life. After the Party started the official crack down on Falun Gong on July 20, 1999, her previous illness returned. She died in March 2003.

Mr. Shi Peifeng, 21, lived in the Youzhu Community on Xindong Street in the Dadong District of Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. He started practicing Falun Gong in January 1998. He had kidney disease, which improved greatly after he practiced Falun Gong. After he went to Beijing to appeal on November 20, 1999, he was illegally taken to the Longshan Brainwashing Center and later transferred to the Fifth Detention Center for further persecution. He was released after his parents were forced to pay a fine. Under the long-term persecution, his practice environment was severely sabotaged. In August 2003, his kidney disease returned. He died on September 19, 2004.

Mr. Xu Ning and his wife Mrs. Yu Shengzhen were from Suining, Sichuan Province. They learned Falun Gong in September 1997. They benefited from Falun Gong immensely and were both very healthy. Under the Party's brutal persecution, the couple, both over 80, could not withstand the long-term harassment and intimidation and finally gave up practicing Falun Gong. Their previous sicknesses returned. They died in August 2004 and February 2004, respectively.

    2. Crimes Against Practitioners Illegally Detained in Liaoning Province Women's Prison

Liaoning Province Women's Prison was formerly known as Dabei Prison in Shenyang, Liaoning Province. Its division head Guo Haiyan (female) instigated prison inmates to beat practitioner Ms. Xu Qingfang until her body was covered with wounds and bruises and she had black eyes. In the middle of the summer, Guo Haiyan ordered prison inmates Bi Suyuan and Wang Xia (both female) to place a mask, a cotton snow hat and a cotton overcoat on practitioner Ms. Jin Cuixiang. She then had five female prison inmates beat her all at once before shocking her with electric batons. Prison inmates Cui Yanru and Hou Yan (both female) repeatedly beat up practitioner Ms. Zhang Wei and deprived her of sleep. They also wrote messages slandering Teacher and Falun Gong on the bottoms of her feet. The repeated cruel tortures eventually caused her pervious illnesses to re-surface and caused her to suffer a mental collapse. Practitioner Ms. Liu Man is forced to perform hard labor during the day and mop the floor and the corridors at night. Lately, the prison inmates have been depriving her of sleep. Practitioner Ms. Liu Meirong was forced to stand in the center of a small circle of prison guards for a long time. She passed out repeatedly but was forced to stand up again as soon as she was brought back to consciousness. Practitioner Ms. Li Guixia refused to comply with the demands of the torturers. She was brought to a small, windowless shack where a disciplinary staff member, Zhao Xiumei (female), subjected her to electric shock torture. Zhao also ordered prison inmates to repeatedly pour cold water on Ms. Li and beat her with sharp objects. Practitioner Ms. Liu Suzhi refused to memorize the regulations for the prison inmates, so she was deprived of sleep. She was also denied any visits by her family or relatives. The torturers made her sit on a small and low bench for a long duration. She was subjected to electric shocks and was deprived of the use of the toilet. Practitioner Ms. Ding Lihua went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution against her. During her hunger strike, prison inmates Liu Yan and Yu Xiaohong (both female) repeatedly beat her and tortured her.

    3. Additional Crimes Committed by the Police Guards in Shayang Forced Labor Camp in Hubei Province

Lu Wenjun is the captain of the police guards at Shayang Forced Labor Camp in Hubei Province. He has been secretly giving meager food rations to practitioners illegally detained there. Lu Wenjun is the one of the primary people who persecuted practitioner Mr. Zheng Dejun. The Ninth Squadron at Shayang Forced Labor Camp occupies the east and west corridors of the building. The Intensive Torture Team of the Ninth Squadron is stationed in the east corridor and is currently watching practitioner Mr. Qiao Zuoquan, who is from Jingmen. The Intensive Torture Team in the west corridor is now torturing the following practitioners: Mr. Zhang Long from Shiyan, Mr. Wang Yuanhong from Xiangfan, and Mr. Zhou Yuantao from Xiangfan. Of all the practitioners detained in the west corridor, Mr. Zheng Dejun from Yichang, Mr. Peng Hongdao from Chibi and Mr. Zhu from Zhongxiang face the most attention and torture. Mr. Zheng Dejun has never once given in, and he has been subjected to the mind-grinding torture of solitary confinement (1). The prison police tortured him with many abhorrent torture methods, such as total sleep deprivation (2). For one full month, they forced him to watch video programs that attack Falun Gong during the daytime and forced him to listen to audio recordings of the prison regulations at night. Although they failed to make Mr. Zheng Dejun give in, the prison inmates who assisted in the torture collapsed. Mr. Zheng is in a terrible state right now. The camp is planning to extend his prison term.

    4. Masanjia Forced Labor Camp Continues to Torture Practitioners

Wang Xiaofeng is the captain of the First Squadron of Masanjia Forced Labor Camp. Huang Haiyan and Cui Hong were the prison guards from the Third and Fourth Divisions respectively. Liu Hui is a prison guard from the Fifth Division. These four women are most active in torturing practitioners. They have repeatedly extended the prison terms of the following practitioners: Ms. Sheng Lixia, Ms. Liu Xiuyan, Ms. Zhu Yun, Ms. Geng Yulan, Ms. Song Ailian, Ms. Zhang Xiumin, Ms. Gao Fuling, and Ms. Wang Huinan, and have subjected these practitioners to the cruel mental and physical torture of solitary confinement. They don't think twice about torturing those extremely frail practitioners that have been on hunger strikes to protest the illegal detention and tortures. These practitioners were allowed only three trips to the bathroom per day but were not allowed to wash or take a shower. During their solitary confinement, they were also subjected to high-volume noise. Each solitary confinement lasted 10, 15, or 30 days, and sometimes even months. For those practitioners who went on hunger strikes to protest during their solitary confinements, the prison guards threw them on the cold concrete floor and stepped on their limbs before torturing them with abusive force-feeding. They even added a large quantity of salt and drugs to the food (3).

    Notes:

    1. Solitary confinement is a punishment in which a person is denied contact with any other persons, excluding guards. The effects of this isolation are severe, and the deprivation often causes effects similar to those with grave mental illness. Solitary confinement is considered by some to be cruel and unusual punishment, because of its severe effects on a person's mental state.
    2. Deprivation of sleep may also result in irritability, blurred vision, slurred speech, memory lapses, overall confusion, hallucination, nausea, psychosis, and eventually death.
    3. Force-feeding a large quantity of salt causes intense pain in the abdomen. Many practitioners have died from the resulting dehydration. It proves that the purpose of the force-feeding is never to nourish, but rather to punish practitioners and to cause so much pain that they will renounce Falun Gong practice. Forced-feeding is the number one cause of deaths of Falun Gong practitioners.

He threatened that if they again requested the release of Ms. Zhou, he would have the entire family arrested. Later policemen Zhang Yuchao and Jia Shuangwan extorted 17 thousand yuan from her family. Her family didn't have the money because they had previously paid a ten thousand yuan extortion when Ms. Zhou was abducted on two other occasions. Without the extortion money, Ms. Zhou has been sentenced to one year of forced labor in the Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp.
