Licheng District Court in Jinan City Intimidates Falun Gong Practitioner's Lawyers

The Licheng District Court in Jinan City, Shandong Province held a session to hear the case of Ms. Zhang Yuying on February 24, 2009. At the court session, two lawyers, Li and Mo, boldly defended Ms. Zhang Yuying. The judge suddenly announced a recess for half an hour. They did not announce the verdict of the court and hastily ended the session at 3:40 p.m.

On the afternoon of March 18, 2009 the two lawyers went to the court to ask for the verdict in Zhang Yuying's case. They were asked to wait in the reception room.  Sun Zhiguang, the presiding judge responsible for the trial of Zhang Yuying, asked the lawyers may questions about how they became involved with the case, and the clerk recorded their responses. They were detained until the end of the work day. Judge Sun went to and from the room many times, and it seemed that he was consulting with someone else. Lawyer Li answered some questions and refused to answer other questions. Finally when Sun Zhiguang asked lawyer Li to sign a document, Li said that he could sign, but that he needed a copy of the document. They dared not be exposed, so they did not force Li to sign his name.

On the afternoon of March 19, Sun Zhiguang used old tactics and called lawyer Mo many times and let him go to the court so the judge could question him. Because this was illegal manipulation, lawyer Mo ignored him.

Two Ethnic Korean Falun Gong Practitioners Arrested and Tortured by Police

Two Falun Gong practitioners, Ms. Jin Yushun, a seventy-two-year-old Korean farmer in Qushui Village, Tumen City, Jilin Province, and Mr. Xuan Minghua, a fifty-eight-year-old bee keeper, were arrested from their homes by Yuegong Police Station on March 30, 2009. At the police station, the police tortured them during interrogation. Ms. Jin was tortured and beaten for nine hours. Her face was bruised, swollen and beyond recognition. The beatings left her deaf in her left ear and with loose teeth. The two were released within a half hour of each other around 9:00 p.m. on March 31.

Ms. Jin is a widowed farmer of Korean descent. Her two sons and daughter are grown and have established their own families. The eldest son is working for a Korean company as a manager in Vietnam.

Mr. Xuan is Korean too, and his daughter works in Korea. Last year, he stopped keeping bees to care full-time for his eighty-year-old parents. When the police arrested him, his parents were suddenly left with no one to support or care for them, and they were extremely anxious for Mr. Xuan's return.

At 1:30 p.m. on March 30, two police cars arrived in Qusui Village, carrying seven or eight police officers from Yuegong Station. Using two villagers as guides, they broke into Ms. Jin's house and ransacked it, taking away a copy of Zhuan Falun and a copy of Hong Yin, thirty Shen Yun DVDs, and other items. Afterward, they forced Ms. Jin into a police car. Then, they went to Mr. Xuan's house, ransacked it and took away Zhuan Falun and other Falun Gong materials, and forced him into a police car also.

The police took the two practitioners to the police station, jailed them separately, and beat and tortured them. On March 31st, a police officer of Korean descent came into the interrogation room and beat Ms. Jin for nine hours to get her to reveal the source of the Shen Yun DVDs. He slapped her face until he was tired, and then he punched her chin, causing her to bleed. Since she still refused to reveal anything, he struck her head and then stomped on her back and legs. He dragged her by her hair and swirled her in circles. When she raised her hand to ward him off, he stumbled and almost fell, and subsequently began beating her with a renewed frenzy.

The police tried to force Ms. Jin to burn Falun Gong books with a lighter and to stomp on Falun Gong materials and photos. They said if she did it, they would let her go immediately, otherwise they would sentence her harshly. She knew that it was a trick, especially when she saw an officer trying to take pictures. She sternly refused.

At 9:00 p.m., after all their methods failed, the police released her, while Mr. Xuan had been released half an hour earlier.
