Practitioners Die Trying to Escape from the Police in Changchun City, Jilin Province
On March 3, 2001, around 10 p.m. the police in Changchun City, Jilin Province, raided an apartment on the sixth floor of a building in Changchun District of Economic Development, where nine practitioners were staying. The police broke open the iron gate, but were unable to break open the door. There was a standoff between the police and the practitioners for quite some time. The police then sent in the firefighters and attempted to break in from the windows. In the meantime, the practitioners were trying to destroy confidential materials. When the police finally broke through the door four hours later two of the practitioners were trying to escape by a rope from a window fell to the ground apparently because the rope was not strong enough. They reportedly died. The two practitioners were from Jiutai City; one of them was named Zhang Jian. Shortly before Zhang Jian arrived in the apartment at 8 p.m., he had been elsewhere learning how to print materials. Both his brother and sister-in-law had been held in a detention center for 6 months and his mother had been sent to a labor camp. His father, who was recovering from a stroke, was kept away from his home. To keep the news from spreading, the police locked up Xiao, wife of one the practitioners who were arrested.
The above-mentioned practitioners came from Jiutai and other cities. Some of them had lost their homes and their loved ones as a result of the persecution. The police wanted others because they refused to write a guarantee renouncing Falun Dafa. The government has driven them into an impasse. Further details of their present situations are unknown at this point.
