Because she was determined to continue practicing Falun Gong, Zhang and two other practitioners rode a bicycle over 900 kilometers to Beijing to appeal. Afterwards, the local police and several of her co-workers escorted her back and held her in an office on the first floor of her workplace. An hour later, a car from the hospital arrived with a man and woman who tried to take Zhang away. She said to the two doctors, "You are doctors so you should follow professional ethics. I am a normal person without any illness. I don't need a doctor." Doctor Liu said, "The police and your workplace care about you very much. We only want to give you an examination. We will bring you back if no illnesses are found." They were apparently deceiving her. Zhang said, " Examinations are voluntary. No hospital can force someone to have one. I don't have an illness and I don't need any medical examination." Doctor Liu started to pull her into the car. However, Zhang struggled and protested, not willing to get in the car. At that time, the driver and the nurse grabbed her hair and pulled her to the ground. Her shoes fell off in the process. They finally pushed her into the car and took her to the hospital.

Treatment Plan: She was mainly given medicine, injections, and sometimes given shocks with electric needles. The director of the hospital, the doctor, and the police talked with her and asked her to give up Falun Gong. They didn't allow her to read Falun Gong books or practice the exercises. If she did she was tied to the bed and forced to have treatment without her consent.

Medication Dosage: She was given close to five types medicine three times a day. In addition, she was given an injection every night.
Punishment For Refusing to Take Medicine: Male mental patients or the hospital security held her down and forcefully administered the medicine through her nose. They sometimes used electric needles to punish her. In addition, they increased the amount of medication and forced her to take yet another type of unknown medication.
Reactions to the Medication: Her thought process became slow and some of her memory was lost. Her eyes became inactive and her face became yellowish. Her reaction time slowed down and she would often feel sad, being unable to control her tears.

Occupation: A former cashier in a grocery store; forced to resign because she appealed for Falun Dafa.
Family's Class Status: Official
Health Condition: Healthy
History of Mental Illness: None
Because she was determined to practice Falun Gong, Li went to appeal in Beijing. Afterwards, the Pingdu Local Police Department told her family members and workplace that three methods could be used to deal with Li's appeal: 1) continue to detain her in her workplace; 2) send her to a Labor Camp; 3) put her in a mental hospital. Her workplace said they did not want to detain her any more since she had been detained so many times. With no other choices left, her family members agreed to send Li to a mental hospital. They tricked her, saying they were going to take her to the Political-Law Committee; instead they sent her to a mental hospital.

The doctors prohibited her from practicing the exercises and they asked her to give up Falun Gong. In addition, the local police asked her to sign materials denouncing Falun Dafa and the Master. They promised to let her go if she signed the agreement; if not, they said she would stay in the hospital indefinitely.

Medication Dosage: A handful of medicine each time.
Punishment for Refusing to Take the Medicine: Several doctors and nurses came and held her down, grabbing her arms and legs. Some of them held her head and body down. Others picked her nose up and forcefully administered the medicine through her nose. Two people pressed her on a bench and tied her arms to the back. Her face was forced up. After that, they picked up her nose and force-fed her one bowl of medicine after another. She almost choked to death from this. The first time she refused to take the medicine she was tied to a bed and force-fed with an unknown medication.
Reactions to the Medication: The medication and injections made her overweight and weak; she felt sleepy all day. She also couldn't stop salivating. Thus, her shirt was wet and dripping. The bed sheet and bed cover were also wet because of this. Li also lost control of her arms and legs and she stumbled every time she went to the bathroom; she could not stand up once she squatted. Sometimes, she wanted to hold something in front of her to help her stand. This failed, however, since she couldn't stretch out her arms. She couldn't even find her mouth when she wanted to eat. Her family members all cried upon seeing her in such a state; they were at a loss about what to do.
She had a terrible headache. She could not sleep as her eyes were open all night. Her health was gradually restored, however, once she began to study Falun Dafa and practiced the exercises.
