Amnesty International Announces Campaign to Secure the Release of Lizhi He, Prisoner of Conscience
Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioners Continues. Please help secure the release of Lizhi He
Since the Falun Gong was banned by the Chinese government on 22 July 1999 as "a threat to social and political stability", tens of thousands of practitioners have been arbitrarily detained by police, some of them repeatedly for short periods. Many of them are reported to have been tortured or ill-treated in detention. Some practitioners have been detained in psychiatric hospitals. More than 350 Falun Gong followers are reported to have died in custody since the crackdown began. The number of practitioners who remain in detention is believed to be in the thousands. Some of those detained have been charged with crimes and sentenced after unfair trials, while others have been sent to labour camps without trial. New arrests and detentions continue to be reported every day.
Trial Begins for Hong Kong Falun Gong Practitioners Falsely Charged by Police, International Human Rights Organizations Urge Hong Kong to Drop the Charges (Photos)
(Clearwisdom.net) Under pressure from Jiang's regime, the Hong Kong government prosecuted Falun Gong practitioners who had peacefully appealed outside the Chinese Liaison Office on March 14, 2002, using charges of "public obstruction" and "obstructing and assaulting police." The case was brought to court today. Sixteen accused Falun Gong practitioners resolutely denied the false charges made against them and plan to clarify the truth in court. The practitioners believe that justice will be upheld, and hope that the court will give a fair and just verdict and return the innocent reputation to the victims.
Dafa Practitioners Hold Another Press Conference in Osaka to Help Free Japanese Practitioner Detained in China
(Clearwisdom.net) On May 23, 2002, Beijing police detained Falun Gong practitioner Luo Rong from Sumiyoshi County while visiting China to appeal for an end to the persecution of Falun Gong. In the afternoon of June 13, 2002, following prior press conferences in Tokyo and Sumiyoshi, Dafa practitioners held the third press conference in Osaka for Luo Rong. The purpose of the conference was for the earliest possible release of Luo Rong. Practitioners called for the attention and support from people of all walks of life in Japan. Two Japanese practitioners, Abe and Horie, who went to China with Luo Rong and were sent back to Japan, and Luo Rong's Japanese husband spoke at the press conference. Abe and Horie recounted in detail the abuse they themselves suffered in Beijing, and exposed the Jiang government's violence aimed at foreign Falun Gong practitioners. Luo Rong's husband called on the Japanese government, the media and citizens to pay attention to this issue, in the hope they can have Luo Rong released as soon as possible so she can safely return to Japan.
