Support Letter from US Congressman Gary G. Miller, California [July 23, 2002]

August 04, 2002 |

Gary G. Miller
41st District, California
United States
House of Representatives

July 23, 2002

Dear Mr. ___ (name omitted to avoid Chinese consulate's harassment):

Thank you for contacting me regarding House Concurrent Resolution 188 (H. Con. Res 188). I appreciated hearing from you on this issue.

As you know, U.S. Representative Ilena Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) introduced H. Con. Res 188 on July 18, 2001 for the purpose of expressing the sense of Congress that the Government of the People's Republic of China should cease its persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. H. Con. Res 188 has been referred to the House International Relations Committee where it currently awaits further action. While I am not a member of this committee, please know that I will keep your view in mind should H. Con. Res. 188 come to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for debate and vote.

Like you, I am concerned about China's human rights record. For this reason you will be pleased to know I voted in favor of House Resolution 56 (H. Res. 56), a bill which expresses Congress's support for the decision of the U.S. Government to offer and solicit co-sponsorship for a resolution at the 57th Session of the United Nation Human Rights Commission in Geneva, Switzerland, calling upon the Government of the People's Republic of China to end its human rights abuses in China and Tibet. H. Res 56 passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 406 to 6.

Again, thank you for contacting me. Please let me know if I can be of service to you in the future.

Sincerely,

GARY G. MILLER
Member of Congress
