August 27, 2002
I applaud the ruling made by the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) on August 16th, against the incitement of hatred towards Falun gong. [for details, refer to http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2002/8/22/25651.html]
Talentvision broadcast a news item which was as the panel stated "nothing more or less than a biased attack on Falun Gong." The guilty news item was sensationalistic propaganda which had been produced to slander Falun Gong. This ruling shows that broadcasters in Canada must respect the law.
The segment was produced by the Chinese broadcaster CCTV (Chinese Central Television), a government channel, and was shown nationally in Canada. It graphically depicted a brutal murder scene in Beijing. Footage of the blood soaked crime scene was shown repeatedly, violating the requirement of broadcasters to use appropriate editorial judgement.
The Chinese government used this murder to further its drive to persecute religious freedom in China by attributing the crime to Falun Gong.
I will continue to support practitioners of Falun Gong who are slandered and harassed in Canada and are beaten and killed in China.
Sincerely,
Rob Anders, MP
