Xie Ge is a student in his twenties at a university in Shanghai. He was originally from Henan Province. Because of practicing Falun Gong, he was arrested sometime between September and October 2002. He was detained in a "intensive supervision group" at a Beijing "Law Education Center," a euphemism for a brainwashing center. He went on a hunger strike to protest the illegal treatment. The police force-fed him with water mixed with milk powder. The prolonged force-feeding and maltreatment caused his health to deteriorate very quickly.

On April 5, 2002, Xie Ge was sent to the Public Security Hospital and forced to receive intravenous injections. He was later taken back and suffered even more brutal beatings. People who went to his room noticed there were shoe marks on the walls and a newly washed bed sheet. On the window-bars, they noticed bloodstains covering most of their surface. Because Xie Ge continued to do Falun Gong exercises, the police and education staff brutally beat him, and did not allow him to sleep. Many times during the night, people heard him shouting loudly, "You have no right to beat me!" when being tortured by the police. The police who guarded him had been changed many times, but Xie Ge's determination in his practice of Falun Gong has never been shaken under the persecution.

Additional information: When Xie Ge was sent to the brainwashing center, his body was covered with wounds and cuts. He was on a hunger strike at that time. Several police dragged him all the way from their vehicle to the room. Later, he was transferred to Tuanhe Hospital. He refused to be detained in the hospital and asked for an unconditional release. He was then sent back to the brainwashing center. The police force fed him at first, but later began to give him an intravenous injection. The room he was detained in was putrid. He was tied up on an iron bed and police were instructed to use a plastic bag to take care of his daily waste. Some policemen felt it was too dirty and did not do it, and left Xie Ge to urinate on the bed. During the winter, the police purposely opened the window to freeze him. Vicious people from Tuanhe and Xin'an came in, trying to brainwash him, but Xie Ge steadfastly refused to give up his belief of Falun Gong.

Dafa practitioner Pu Yuantao (male) was detained in the center from September to December and suffered from persecution. To protest the illegal detention and maltreatment, he went on a hunger strike for a very long time. Trying to make him give up and so as to gain favor from their bosses, the police and collaborators [former Falun Gong practitioners who have gone astray due to brainwashing and torture] subjected him to sleep deprivation.

A female practitioner continued to practice Falun Gong after being kidnapped by the police and taken to the center. Five or six policemen fiercely beat her up. Even the gate guards secretly admitted that those policemen were acting like beasts. She would not give up her belief of Falun Gong, so the police poured cold water on her in the freezing weather. At midnight, the police brutally tortured her and people often heard her horrible and painful screaming.

A male practitioner was facing daily physical punishment and beatings. He was not allowed to sleep. He was forced to squat down or suffer from physical punishment day and night.

Bai Shaohua was on a hunger strike and refused to give up. On November 14, 2002, Shaohua was transferred from the brainwashing center. His whereabouts are unknown.

Currently, the center holds between twenty and thirty practitioners. The police employed violent interrogation. The rooms holding practitioners have heavy, thick curtains with four light bulbs glaring brightly at all times. Every room is around 15 square meters (about 150 sq. ft.). The board on the bed was very hard and the floor was covered with waste tissue, cigar stubs and the police's spit. The floor was only cleaned once every one to two months. The air in the room was filthy and practitioners were not allowed to take a shower. Two policemen formed a group and the groups took shifts every hour. Eight to ten policemen were assigned to persecute a single practitioner. They called the practitioners "targets."

The heads of Martial Police and "610 Office" [a bureau specifically created by the Jiang's government to persecute Falun Gong. It has absolute power over each level of administration in the Party, as well as over the political and judiciary branches] came for inspection. Right before they came, the rooms were cleaned up to make a show. During the People Congress and Party's Congress, representatives also came to check. But they could never see the real situation of the center. In every room, there was a poster listing the regulation rules of detention. The brainwashing center functioned as a private detention center.

The center physically punished the practitioners by forcing them to sit still on the edge of beds, holding their backs straight and with both hands on their laps. The police recorded every tiny gesture the practitioners made. The police were brainwashed themselves before being sent over to the center. As time passed, some gradually came to understand that practitioners were good people. They were moved by the practitioners' spirit and changed their understanding of practitioners and Dafa. The center's administration was afraid that the police would come to know the truth and so changed those who guarded the Dafa practitioners frequently.

The person in charge of the center is deputy dean Liu of Political Department of Eleventh Branch of Beijing Martial Police Army. He threatened the police who worked in the center that if the center's information was exposed by the Clearwisdom website over the course of the next ten years, he would punish the police. Liu is an alcoholic. He often came to check on practitioners after drinking.

The representative of the 16th Party Congress and the head of fourth group of Xin'an Female Forced Labor Camp Li Jianrong said that practitioners who would not give up practicing Falun Gong would face beatings, and incited some criminals to assault practitioners.
