According to the US consulate in Shanghai, on January 22, Charles Li, a US citizen from the San Francisco Bay Area was arrested by Chinese security officers shortly after he landed at Guangzhou Airport in China. He was then transferred to Yangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, thousands of miles away from Guangzhou. US consular officials are allowed only one 30 minutes meeting with Charles Li per month.
Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo urged other Congress members in her appeal letter to jointly convey their concerns for Mr. Li and request his release. She invited them to jointly sign a letter to Mr. Yang Jiechi, Chinese Ambassador in the US to request the Chinese government to release Charles Li immediately.

He formerly did research at Harvard University, and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2000. He manages his own business related to Chinese medicine. Lai Ning, Falun Gong spokesperson for rescuing Charles Li said, "Falun Gong practitioners' position is that Charles Li did not commit any crimes. He is an American citizen, and the Chinese government should release him immediately."
