Thirteen-year-old Li Ying is the daughter of Chen Shulan, a Falun Gong practitioner from Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. Even as her mother and her grandparents were illegally imprisoned one after another, her two uncles and her aunt were persecuted to death. Ying was taken into custody by the 610 Office in Changping, Beijing. She was sent to a nursing home to live with the seniors there. Ying is the only child living in the nursing home. She basically does not have any freedom.
The family of practitioners is from Canfangying Village, Beixinbao Township, Huailai County, which is under the administrative authority of Zhangjiakou City of Hebei Province. Father Chen Yunchuan, mother Wang Lianrong, eldest sister Chen Shulan, eldest brother Chen Aizhong, younger brother Chen Aili, younger sister Chen Hongping and the eldest sister's daughter Li Ying, all practice Falun Dafa. The whole family benefited from the practice. The father's chronic back pain disappeared, and the mother's chronic cough, asthma, and painful joints due to over 30 years of arthritis, all went away after practicing Falun Gong. Her previous ill temper also improved after practicing Falun Gong.
After the suppression of Falun Gong began on July 20, the eldest brother Chen Aizhong was illegally sentenced to 3 years of forced labor because he maintained his belief in "Truth, Compassion and Forbearance." On September 12, 2001, he was sent to the first Tangshan Forced Labor Camp in Hebei Province. He was tortured to death after eight days in prison. The younger sister Chen Hongping was kidnapped and detained by the Dong Huayuan local police station in Huailai District. She was beaten until both her legs were broken. Later, she was sent to Gaoyang labor camp for an additional year and a half jail term. She was tortured to death on March 5, 2003. She was only 32 years old.
On February 28, 2004, father Chen Yunchuan, mother Wang Lianyin and the second son Chen Aili were taken away and sent to the Sha Lingzi brainwashing center in Zhangjiakou City, where they suffered torture and other forms of persecution. The three of them began a hunger strike to protest. After two months, the father and his son were released and sent back home. Beixin Baoxiang's police sent out guards to put them under 24-hour house arrest. By then, Chen Aili's body had practically been destroyed and he was very weak. On July 9, while under surveillance in his home, he managed to escape. He became destitute and homeless, going from place to place to avoid being arrested and persecuted. He remained physically weak and his health deteriorated as his body had been severely damaged due to persecution; he passed away on November 5, 2004. He was only 33 years old when he died.
On July 26, Chen Yunchuan (the grandfather) was abducted for the second time and imprisoned at Sha Lingzi brainwashing center. On October 19, Wang Lianyin (the grandmother) was tortured to the brink of death and released. Chen Yunchuan was released on that same day. No sooner had the two regained freedom that they once again had to endure the pain of losing their child.
Out of the four children, only the eldest daughter, Chen Shulan (Ying's mother) remains alive (She was 37 years old in 2004.) Chen Shulan was abducted on September 17, 2002 and arbitrarily sentenced without trial to serve a seven and a half year jail term. At present, she is imprisoned at the Dashing Female Jail in Beijing.
After her mother Chen Shulan, grandfather Chen Yunchuan (65 years old in 2004), and grandmother Wang Lianyin (62 year old in year 2004) were taken away one after another, her twin uncles, Chen Aizhong and Chen Aili, and aunt Chen Hongping were persecuted to death and little Ying became homeless and alone.
On January 9, 2003, Ying was sent by Beijing Changping's 610 Office to "Beijing Changping nursing home" (Changping does not have an orphanage). Ying was the only child in a home for the elderly. On September 1, 2004, Ying started attending the first grade in the Beijing Changping No. 3 Middle School (assigned in the third class). The government, the Education Committee and the 610 Office jointly undertake the responsibility to pay for her living expenses. Besides attending school, Ying has no personal freedom. She needs prior approval and authorization from the Changping 610 Office and the vice-manager of the nursing home when she wants to go anywhere or wishes to do anything.
Ying was temporarily released from the nursing home, but the Changping 610 Office in Beijing imposed an order that before February 15, 2005, Ying must return.
