(Clearwisdom.net) On October 17, 2000, Falun Dafa practitioner Mr. Zhang Shouren, age sixty-six, went to the National Appeals Bureau in Beijing to ask the Chinese government to stop its persecution of Falun Gong. He was going to share with the officials how he had benefited from the practice. However, the police abducted and confined him at the Wanbolin Detention Center in Taiyuan City. There, he was brutally beaten. His health steadily deteriorated after the beatings. On August 24, 2001, Mr. Zhang died at home.
When Zhang Shouren tried to go to the National Appeals Bureau, he could not find the building because the signs had been removed, so he went to Tiananmen Square to make his case. Police officers arrested him and took him to the Tiananmen Square Police Station and locked him up with dozens of practitioners from Jiangsu, Shandong and Henan Provinces. The police sent all the practitioners to police stations near their residences. On October 19, Mr. Zhang was taken to the Hepingbeilu Police Station and later moved to Taiyuan City's Wanbolin Detention Center.
After Mr. Zhang was locked up, the police slapped his face until it was all swollen. Next, they beat him with electric batons and rubber clubs until they were so tired that they could not continue. The second time he was brutalized, Mr. Zhang was so injured and dizzy that he could not stand or even speak. He was nauseous and fell on the floor. For days, he could not walk properly.
Zhang Shouren's daughter, worried about the father's health, went to the jail demanding his release. They made her pay 1,000 yuan, and they released Mr. Zhang on January 17, 2001. At that point, he was already very weak. He could not walk or move and had no appetite. Mr. Zhang's health continued to decline, and he died on August 24, 2001.
