DENVER--Both houses of the Colorado State legislature unanimously passed a resolution last week condemning the persecution of spiritual practice Falun Gong on U.S. soil, and the concentration camps in China known to harvest organs from living Falun Gong practitioners and others.
Senator Lewis Entz (R) and Representative Joshua Penry (R) sponsored the resolution with 75 of the 100 legislators co-sponsoring. Senate Joint Resolution 06-027 will be sent to President Bush ahead of the Chinese leader Hu Jintao's visit to Washington this week.
"China is an important trade partner, but that does not mean we should turn our back on its citizens that they execute everyday," said Rep. Penry while addressing his colleagues on the senate floor before the vote on the resolution. "This country needs to stand up and make a strong statement that we will not accept that."
Representative Berens, a sponsor of the resolution, had been harassed by the Chinese Consulate for carrying a similar proclamation as Mayor of Broomfield, Colorado. "They continue to not only persecute their own citizens, they try to intimidate Americans who stand up for freedoms of others," Berens testified before the House.
Although the persecution of Falun Gong has been ongoing for nearly 7 years, several witnesses have recently revealed a network of concentration camps. These camps are the human stockpile for China's booming organ trade and Falun Gong practitioner are the unwilling donors.
