(Clearwisdom.net) Ms. Zhang Jinlan was a Falun Gong practitioner from Gaolin County, Shaanxi Province. After the Jiang Zemin regime started the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, she was detained several times. The persecutors placed her in a mental hospital and injected her with unknown substances. As a result, Ms. Zhang became completely paralyzed, and the lower part of her body was severely infected. While she was in such terrible condition, her home and phone were monitored. Unable to get any help from outside, Ms. Zhang Jinlan died on February 1, 2008.
Ms. Zhang Jinlan was around 50 years old. She lived in the Tuanzhuang area in Huangce Village, Yuchu Township in Gaoling County, Shaanxi Province. She went to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong in December 2000, was arrested by 610 Office agents and transferred back to Shaanxi Province, to the Fifth Police Division located in Sanyao Village, Xi'an City. Most of the inmates there were criminal prisoners serving a life sentence or commuted death sentence. They are forced to work over ten hours per day, from 7:00 in the morning until 11:00 at night. Sometimes they had to work until 3:00 in the morning. Ms. Zhang Jinlan wore handcuffs for several days, causing a cut measuring 0.4 inches by 1/8 of an inch on one of her wrists (10mm long and 2mm wide). The cut bled profusely and became infected later. In addition, she was forced to take care of a death row prisoner.
In December 2001, the officials sentenced Ms. Zhang to one year of forced labor. The labor camp officials refused to accept her because she did not pass the physical exam, but the perpetrators bribed the forced labor camp officials to accept her. She was detained in the Second Division at the Xi'an City Women's Forced Labor Camp.
On April 21, 2001, Camp Director Yang, Deputy Director Zhang Zhuoqing and Division Head Wan and several other people rounded up more than ten strong inmates along with four male guards and several female guards. They beat 28 Falun Gong practitioners detained in the Second Division brutally. The practitioners formed a circle by holding hands. The guards and inmates attacked the practitioners using electric batons and separated them.
Practitioner Wu Daqiong lost consciousness. Practitioner Luo Changyun's forehead, face and eyes were badly bruised. Practitioner Zhao Li suffered a mental collapse. Practitioner Ding Xiaoyu was covered with blood. Ms. Zhang Jinlan shouted, "Stop beating practitioners!" One person pushed her head down and immobilized her face and jaw, leaving her unable to speak. Ms. Zhang was eventually shackled for seven days and transferred to the Third Division. While there, she remained determined in her belief and refused to cooperate with the persecutors. She was shackled several more times and tied to a bed until later on, when her health showed signs of severe deterioration. Ms. Zhang was finally released on medical parole in October 2001.
In December 2001, Ms. Zhang Jinlan borrowed 200 yuan and went to Beijing to appeal for Dafa again. 610 Office agents eventually arrested and incarcerated her in the Yanliang Detention Center, Shaanxi Province, where she suffered from brutal torture. She was forced to wear heavy shackles for five months, causing her ankles and toes to bleed and fester. She could not wear normal shoes. Ms. Zhang had to cut an opening in the front of her shoes. She was not unable to change her clothes or use sanitary napkins during the several months she was in that center. In May 2002 she still wore her winter pants. The guards often hung her up by her arms and attempted to force her to "reform." She refused to cooperate with them.
In July 2002, the police arrested Ms. Zhang and took her to the Xi'an City Brainwashing Center. The perpetrators extorted 2,500 yuan from her family as a brainwashing fee. They called her family members to the brainwashing center and hoped to shake her righteous thoughts by using her family against her. Ms. Zhang Jinlan refused to cooperate. The guards slapped her face several times. They were unable to "reform" Ms. Zhang, so they sentenced her to one year of forced labor. At that point, her blood pressure was at 230 - 240, so the labor camp officials refused to accept her.
On September 20, 2002, Ms. Zhang was transferred to the Ankang Mental Hospital, where practitioners are routinely tortured. She was inhumanly tortured there, but she stayed determined in her belief and went on several protest hunger strikes. She continued to recite the Fa, practice the exercises and send righteous thoughts.
While at this hospital, her captors there made her drink unknown substances daily. On two occasions several male inmates and guards pushed her down, immobilized her neck, pulled her hair, held her nose and force-fed her drugs. She almost lost consciousness. The abusers beat her often for her continuing to do the Falun Gong exercises. She responded by staging additional hunger strikes in protest of the abuse. She became very thing, and her blood pressure rose drastically. She became very thin and had a hard time sleeping at night.
In December 2002, Ms. Zhang went on another hunger strike. The perpetrators urged the doctors to force-feed her and inject her with unknown substances. After only one injection, she felt like she was having a stroke and could not move half of her body. She became completely paralyzed that same night and lost consciousness. Because she was injected for over ten hours every day, she was tied up on a bed used for mentally disoriented patients. She could not go to the restroom and had to relieve herself on the bed. After several days of injections with unknown substances, her female organs, hips and back became severely infected. She suffered a mental collapse. Ankang Hospital administrators then sent a notice to Gaoling County officials that Ms. Zhang's life was in danger and she needed to be picked up.
The perpetrators delayed for over a week. In mid-December 2002, the family was notified. Ms. Zhang was taken home. She was clad only in pajamas when she was picked up. After she returned home, she could not recognize anyone, and the lower part of her body was severely infected. She had become bedridden. Although she was in such terrible condition, her home and phone were monitored because the perpetrators were afraid of their abuse being exposed. They tried hard to prevent any practitioners or other people from approaching her. Cut off from help, Ms. Zhang died on February 1, 2008.
The main perpetrators who participated in the brutal torture of Falun Gong practitioners at the Ankang Hospital were:
Female prisoners Gao Ming and Dong Hongtao
Nurses Liu Qi, Dong, and Chen (both given names unknown)
Office chairman Wei Yijun
Hong Kui
