Ms. Zhang Yunxian, 60, lived in Xinhe Township, Baqiao District, Xian City, Shaanxi Province. She went to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong on December 25, 1999. The police arrested her at Tiananmen Square on January 1, 2000 and imprisoned her for seven years. They first held her in a forced labor camp for one year and then incarcerated her at Shaanxi Province Women's Prison for five years. The guards ordered inmates to verbally and physically attack her, and they forced her to wear shackles weighing 53 lbs. Once, Zhang Yunxian had her hands cuffed behind her back for 16 days. She went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution, and the guards force-fed her food laced with toxic drugs.
The illegally imposed sentence expired on September 25, 2006, but the prison authorities refused to release her. Later, three officials from Baqiao District took her to the Shaanxi Province 610 Office Brainwashing Center.
