Many Falun Gong practitioners have been forcibly injected with or force-fed drugs on orders of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) during the 10-year long persecution. The United Nations (UN) and international community has been showing their concern.
During the 41st session of the annual meeting of the UN Committee Against Torture from November 3rd to 21st, 2008, the CCP's use of drug torture and compulsory psychiatric hospital detention was discussed.
Special Rapporteur on Torture Manfred Nowak, submitted a report to the United Nations in the seventh session of the Human Rights Council on January 14, 2009 entitled, "Promotion and Protection of all Human rights, Civil, Political, Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Including the Right to Development -- Report of the Special Rapporteur on torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment" In the report, he stated, "Moreover, in many cases, their detention and/or forced treatment are not subject to judicial review. For instance, at the time of the Special Rapporteur's visit to China, 'enforced drug rehabilitation programmes (qianzhi jiedu) were a specific form of administrative detention."
The followings are some specific cases.
Fang Shimin: Fang is a practitioner from Wenshan County. She was imprisoned for a year, during which police added drugs to her food, damaging her nervous system and causing her to lose consciousness.
Wan Xiuying: Wan is a practitioner from Gejiu City. She was sentenced to 5 years. In prison, she was forced to stand for a long time, and injected unidentified drugs. Due to the torture, she could not talk, walk and lost consciousness. After being released, she could not regain her memory and became very weak.
Zhang Rufen: Zhang is a practitioner from Haikou, Kunming. She was force-fed food with drugs, which made her eyes, nose an ears bleed. After being released, she was not allowed to contact other practitioners.
Wang Lianzhi: 72-year old Ms. Wang is a practitioner from Kunming. She was arrested on April 15, 2008 and sent to prison in October 2008. On October 27, her son was told by the prison that Wang had developed mental illness. Her son asked what happened to his mother, who was fine a couple of days earlier. Prison said that it was a doctor's diagnosis. The prison also said that Ms. Wang was force-fed some drugs for hypertension. Her son asked what else she was force-fed, but the police refused to answer.
Falun Dafa practitioner Mr. Sun Tiechun is from Benxi City, Liaoning Province. In September 2004, officer Li Zhannan from the Niuxintai Police Station arrested Mr. Sun on a bus. He then took Mr. Sun to a detention center and kept him there for a month. Mr. Sun was later sentenced to three years at the Weiningying Forced Labor Camp. He refused to denounce the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, and was therefore subjected to brutal torture. On seven or eight occasions, he was locked up in a small, windowless cell that was infested with mosquitoes and other insects. The prison police tortured him with the brutal "stretching torture," (see: http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2007/12/30/92640.html) and injected him with an unknown drug. When Mr. Sun screamed from the unbearable pain induced by the drug, officer Dong Bo ordered a prisoner to seal Mr. Sun's mouth with tape. Mr. Sun was subjected to the stretching torture for two weeks, and as a result his arms and legs became immobile and he suffered a mental collapse.
Mr. Yu Shaoqi, 32, is a practitioner in Chenxi County, Hunan Province. Since July 1999, Mr. Yu has been detained at least six times. In November 2005, he was imprisoned in a forced labor camp. In December 2006, under pressure from the Huaihua City Politics and Law Committee, the 610 Office, the Domestic Security Section, and the Chenxi County Domestic Security Section, Mr. Yu's employer, the Meteorological Bureau, took him to the Huaihua City Mental Hospital. While there, he suffered three months of psychiatric persecution and developed symptoms of dementia, foot trembling, blurred vision, and drooling.
In recent months, the 610 Office, the Politics and Law Committee, and the Domestic Security Section have forced Mr. Yu's family to choose between injecting him with psychiatric drugs at home themselves or admitting him to a mental hospital. On the morning of December 19, 2008, while he was taking in his ID card to the police department, Mr. Yu was arrested. Mr. Yu was taken to Changsha City for a "psychiatric diagnosis" . The police forced Mr. Yu's family to inject him with psychiatric drugs again. On January 11, 2009, the same family members injected him twice at home.
