He shared his thoughts about the show. "It was terrific, I was so happy to be here this evening. My wife and I enjoyed it very much."
Sen. Kasten felt seeing Shen Yun broadened his knowledge of classical Chinese culture. "I am learning about Chinese culture in a way I haven't had the opportunity to learn before. So that was an important part of this evening."
The former senator said he was touched by the spirituality he felt in the performances. "It was an eye opening experience to see another side of China and understand the rich cultural history; and also the spirituality of the evening and of the dances came through the evening, so it was a very enjoyable evening and something I hope to learn more about and to see more of in the future."
His final reflection was, "I think all of us throughout the world have a certain spiritual basis to our lives. And my understanding of this evening's performance is that there was a spiritual basis to classical dance and to Chinese life going back many centuries. So it was an impressive performance."
Ambassador: 'Remarkable and wonderful'
Dr. Williams, ambassador of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United States of America and the Organization of American States, was also in the audience at the Kennedy Center Opera House. He was greatly impressed with the way Shen Yun masterfully wove ancient folklore and culture into the art form of dance.
He felt that seeing Shen Yun was an educational and moving experience. "I think it's a wonderful show. It's a great opportunity for the exhibition of Chinese culture expressed through dance that is culturally genuine. And the way it's blended into the art form of dance, I think it's remarkable."
"I'm very glad I came. It makes me want to immerse myself into Chinese culture a little more," he said.
Dr. Williams said he recognized some of the characters from ancient Chinese legends and fables introduced in the dances. "I was really enchanted. I was pleased to see the level of the performance and to see the breadth of performance."
'The whole performance was powerful, enthusiastic, and breathtaking'
As an artist who is primarily a painter, Ms. Spills was captivated by the radiant costumes and backdrops. "I loved the colorful costumes--they were so ornate. Oh, it was just breathtaking," she said.
From the verses of the songs, which were sung in Chinese and displayed in English, Ms. Spills was moved by the deeper meanings.
"The words of the songs were very powerful. The whole performance was powerful, enthusiastic, and breathtaking," she said.
