1. Ms. Li Fang'e and Ms. Liu Zezhi Arrested and Sentenced to Imprisonment
Ms. Li Fang'e, 74, had suffered from terminal gastric cancer before she practiced Falun Gong. She was very grateful to Falun Gong for saving her life and talked about her experience to many people.
Ms. Liu Zezhi, 46, had been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) many times for her practice of Falun Gong. After she was released from the Shibalihe Women's Labor Camp in Zhengzhou City in 2004, she had to rent an apartment with her daughter because her husband prevented her from returning home. She did various part-time jobs to support the education of her daughter. Last year, Ms. Liu's daughter commenced university studies, but she is now in great sorrow because of her mother's imprisonment.
In the morning on April 30, 2010, when Ms. Liu went downtown to a local open market, she saw that Ms. Li Fang'e was surrounded by a crowd. When Ms. Liu clarified the facts about Falun Gong to the people there, she was reported to police by two female peddlers, Xiong Benxiu and Wu Zhengzhi. Policeman Zhang Rongzhen arrested Ms. Liu and Ms. Li, and brought them to the police station of Guangshan County, where they were detained and interrogated for more than 10 hours. They were released at night, as the police failed to find any evidence that Ms. Liu had distributed Falun Gong materials.
At 6 a.m. on May 7, police from the 610 Office of Guangshan County Zhang Rongzhen and Xu Lin broke into Ms. Liu's house and arrested her. They ransacked her home and took away a banner that read, “Falun Dafa is good” and some Falun Gong books. They used these items as evidence against her. On July 7, the 610 office ordered the Procuratorate of Guangshan County to charge Ms. Liu and Ms. Li. Later they ordered the Guangshan County court to sentence Ms. Liu and Ms. Li.
During her time in the Detention Center of Guangshan County, Ms. Liu was cruelly beaten many times by male criminal inmate Gao Jin and the female inmate Zhang. Once, Ms. Liu was beaten so badly that she could not walk for two weeks.
Ms. Liu appealed to the Middle Court of Xinyang City. During the process, many practitioners and some lawyers wrote to the local 610 Office to tell them the facts about Falun Gong, but to no avail. The court upheld the original verdict without holding a trial or investigation. The verdict was not sent to Ms. Liu and her family until four days before she was sent to the prison on March 5.
2. Mr. He Yuanlang Detained and Health Severely Impacted
Mr. He Yuanlang, 37, is from Sanliqiao Village of Guangshan County. In 2001 he went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong, for which he was sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment by the local 610 office. After Mr. He was released, he was closely monitored and harassed by local police. In order to avoid further persecution, he left home and made a living doing odd jobs.
At noon on April 30, 2010, when Mr. He was making lunch after leaving work, a group of police from the Domestic Security Group of Guangshan County 610 Office and the Xuanshan Police Station broke into his home and arrested him. Later he was detained in the Guangshan County Detention Center. In early March of 2011, the local 610 Office ordered the county court to sentence him to 4 years of imprisonment without a trial or investigation. The authorities did not inform his family about the sentence and forbade him from appealing. On March 9, 2011 he was sent to the Xinmi Prison of Zhengzhou City.
On March 7, 2011 one of Mr. He's relatives met with him in the detention center. He walked with a pronounced limp and had lost more than 20 pounds. His health was obviously severely impacted by abuse suffered in the detention center.
