(Clearwisdom.net) The Harbin Drug Treatment Labor Camp is an institution that specializes in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. Although it has been renamed “Drug Treatment Center” or “Drug Treatment Station,” its true function continues to be the brutal persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. On July 3, 2011, practitioner Ms. Liu Shuling from Qitaihe City, Heilongjiang Province, was tortured with the “Big Hang Up” – a torture in which the victim is hung up by her arms for a prolonged period of time. She didn’t survive the torture and died inside the Drug Treatment Center.
The “Drug Treatment Center” Does Not Treat Drug Addicts, but Instead Brainwashes People
Although the name Drug Treatment Center implies that drug addicts who need medical and psychological treatment are treated there, this is not the case with the Harbin Drug Treatment Center. The only people detained there are either Falun Gong practitioners or others who have appealed to the government for their rights – innocent people whom authorities have deemed it necessary to “re-educate.” The government's purpose in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners is to force them to give up their belief. Once Falun Gong practitioners are taken to this brainwashing center, they are first detained in the so-called “Transformation Group” on the third floor. There, the authorities select various prisoners to monitor practitioners and try to brainwash them and force them to “transform.” If practitioners refuse to write statements to give up the practice, they are subjected to sleep deprivation or denied use of the bathroom.
Products Made Through Forced Labor Are Sold Overseas
The Harbin Drug Treatment Center forces practitioners to work long hours. The quotas for production are so high that they are impossible to meet. At the end of the day, practitioners are forced to take their work back to their cells. Usually they work until 10 p.m., and some work until midnight. If practitioners cannot finish the quota, they lose points and their term is extended. If they do finish the quota for the workshop, they have to spend an hour each night folding boxes. The last ten practitioners to finish also lose points and have their terms extended.
The major item produced at the Drug Treatment Center is toothpicks. They are packaged either in boxes or cans, with around 300 to 600 toothpicks per container. The Qianjin Labor Camp (formerly known as the Wanjia Labor Camp) also produces the same merchandise. The labels are printed in English and are exported to various countries including Russia, Canada, Spain and Japan.
In addition to forced labor, practitioners are also often required to do “homework” – written assignments that slander Falun Gong. If they do not finish their assignment or do not complete it to the authorities' satisfaction, they are physically abused, lose points or have their term extended.
Persecution Endured by Practitioners
Ms. Sun Zhongping, originally from Mishan City, now lives in Daqing City. She was illegally arrested by the Daqing police and detained at the police station. Ms. Sun refused to give up her belief in Truth-Compassion-Forbearance. As a result, she was physically and verbally abused by Qi Hongyu, a collaborator. Sun Zhongping's health was poor, and she had high blood pressure. Under this pressure, she constantly lost consciousness.
Torture Reenactment: Bound to an Iron Chair
Ms. Chen Min is a Falun Gong practitioner from Mishan City. Because Ms. Chen refused to renounce Falun Gong, police officer Liu Ming instructed policewoman Shi Jingxue to beat and curse her. They tortured Chen Min by tying her to an iron chair, and afterwards they ordered prisoners Rong Mengnan and Wan Tiantian to beat her until she fell to the ground, whereupon she was repeatedly kicked. The guards and prisoners constantly tried to humiliate Ms. Chen. Once, Rong Mengnan and Wan Tiantian grabbed Chen Min by the collar and dragged her from the first floor to the fourth floor.
At the beginning of 2012, Chen Min and Wang Shufan (from Qiqihar), Zhang Lianwen, Ma Shufen (from Mudanjian), Liu Guishuang (from Harbin and in her 60s) were transferred to the Qianjin Labor Camp for further persecution.
Ms. Wang Yu'e, 55, is a practitioner from the 853 Ranch in Baoqing County. On December 29, 2011, workshop director Guan Lei kicked her, and on December 30, he loudly cursed her. Ms. Wang reported this to the guard on duty, but the guard was not interested in taking care of it. On January 9, 2012, Liu Ming came to the workshop and told Wang Yu'e to fold boxes. Wang Yu'e said that she was not feeling well, that her heart was beating very fast and that she could not work. When asked about her situation, Guang Lei said that Wang Yu'e was always reluctant to work. Liu Ming then struck Wang Yu'e and said angrily, “If you do not work, you will die.”
The director of the workshop is Guan Lei, 25 years old. After she was placed in charge, she colluded with the instructors and the guards, and used a variety of approaches to persecute practitioners. She was responsible for the severe persecution of Wang Yu'e.
Policewoman Shi Jingxue and Ba Lihua, a collaborator, tried to “transform” practitioners Wang Yufen and Gao Shuhua, but they were not successful. They became hateful towards the two practitioners and often verbally abused them and deducted points from them. They also used Wang Yumei, a non-practitioner who had appealed to the government, as their spy, to further persecute the two practitioners.
The labor camp also has detainees complete so-called “anonymous questionnaires.” Practitioners are asked to provide answers to the following questions by placing an “X” on a test paper: Is there any torture? Is there any financial extortion? Did inmates get enough food? Did anyone work overtime? Few dare to state the truth because the tests are collected in order and it is easy to tell who wrote what. As a result of stating the truth, practitioners are verbally abused and their terms extended.
In August and November 2011, agents from the provincial 610 Office visited the labor camp twice to check on the status of “transformation.” They hid their identity, claiming that they were there for a sociological study. A different person came each time.
