She was arrested by officers from the Yangpu District Police Station on November 22, 2007, when she was seen distributing truth clarification materials in Yangpu District. The officers ransacked her home and confiscated a printer, computer, and other personal belongings. The items were never returned to her. Ms. Zhang was later illegally sentenced to one year of forced labor and taken to Shanghai Women's Forced Labor Camp. At the time her daughter had just turned one. After Ms. Zhang was released from the labor camp, officers from the Ganquan Police Station, local 610 Office, and residential committee harassed and intimidated her and her family. Ms. Zhang's cell phone and her family's landline were often tapped and monitored.
In February 2010, Ms. Zhang was forcibly carried out of her home by several male officers while she was still in her pajamas and slippers. Many local residents witnessed the arrest.
