(Minghui.org) Mr. Hu Chuanlin, 42, an employee of the Beijing International Studies University, was released from a forced labor camp at the end of June 2013. However, he was monitored by the authorities and had to leave home to avoid further persecution.
Mr. Hu has been arrested many times since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started the persecution of Falun Gong in July 1999. He has been held in a forced labor camp twice, detained three times and was taken to a brainwashing center once.
Mr. Hu was sentenced to two years of forced labor in 2007. When he was released in March 2009, he was removed from his post at the Academic Affairs Office of the Beijing International Studies University and had to work in the Logistics Office.
About a dozen plainclothes officers went to the Logistics Office on September 21, 2012. They said that they were from the Chaoyang Police Department, but did not show any identification. The person in charge claimed that he had arrested over 1,000 Falun Gong practitioners. But when Mr. Hu asked him his name, he refused to reveal it. Another officer with the surname Shi twisted Mr. Hu's arms, then kicked him to the ground and pressed his knees on Mr. Hu's back.
Mr. Hu was taken to the Sanjianfang Police Station, where he was interrogated. When he refused to answer any questions officer Shi falsified an inquiry record and demanded that Mr. Hu sign the document. Mr. Hu refused.
Shi showed Mr. Hu what he had written down. It read: Question: “From whom did you obtain the Falun Gong books?” Answer: “They are from other Falun Gong practitioners.” Mr. Hu then said, “You are trying to frame other Falun Gong practitioners.”
Mr. Hu was later taken to the Chaoyang Detention Center. A preliminary hearing was held at the detention center, where Mr. Hu tried to talk about the persecution of Falun Gong. The judge threatened him by saying, “If you dare to talk more, we will arrest your wife as well.”
Mr. Hu was detained for 40 days, which is beyond the legal time limit. His family members and those from his work unit did not know where he was detained, nor do they know who was in charge of his case.
Mr. Hu was later sentenced to two-and-a-half years of forced labor without due process of law. His family was not notified and Mr. Hu has never received any written decision of the sentence. His “crime” is that he practiced Falun Gong and owned Falun Gong books.
Mr. Hu was held at Xin'an Forced Labor Camp in Beijing. His wife hired a lawyer to appeal his detention, and Mr. Hu signed the appeal letter. After the lawyer left, head guard Wang threatened Mr. Hu and said, “Don't cause us trouble. You wife might get arrested when she meets with the lawyer. Reconsider it and withdraw the appeal.” Mr. Hu worried about the safety of his wife and son, and so withdrew his appeal.
Mr. Hu was tortured by various means, including being deprived of sleep and being forced to stand and squat for long periods of time.
Mr. Hu was not paid his salary from the university while he was detained at the forced labor camp from September 2007 to March 2009. This is against the state policy. His salary was also withheld when his wife was detained in a labor camp from September 2002 to November 2004.
Mr. Hu has been arrested and detained many times over the past 14 years. He was also given more than 10 “fails” during the annual assessments at work, which affected his salary.
Officials from the university now plan to force Mr. Hu to take voluntary leave.
