(Minghui.org) Ever since Ms. Zhang Fengying was sent to Beijing Women’s Forced Labor Camp in 2013, her relatives both inside China and overseas have been actively working to rescue her. Her attorney is appealing her case and has requested a trial.
Beijing government officials said, “No trials were ever held in the past for cases like this.” But the attorney insisted on appealing for her and submitted a request to Beijing Appeals Center officer Wang Yangdong, urging a trial. His request is being reviewed.
Arrested and Detained
When Ms. Zhang was informing others about the persecution of Falun Gong in the Huilongguan Residential Compound in the Changping District on November 25, 2012, Huoying Police Station agents arrested her. She was held in the Changping Detention Center for two months before being transferred to another detention center on January 18, 2013. Officials from Changping 610 Office and Police Department sent her to a forced labor camp with a term of two years without notifying her family. When her family went to the detention center to give her clothes at noon on January 22, they were told she had already been sent to Tianhetang Women’s Forced Labor Camp in the Daxing District of Beijing. She is currently in Division 4.
Ms. Zhang’s blood pressure continued to rise, and she developed the symptoms of severe gynecological disease with alarming discharge. Her family requested her release on medical parole, but the authorities have not yet released her.
Previously, when Ms. Zhang's husband was blinded in both eyes and in urgent need of an operation to recover, the family asked the labor camp authorities to allow Ms. Zhang to serve her term outside the camp so that she could take care of her husband. The request was denied.
Ms. Zhang’s eldest daughter is in Australia, and she has also been seeking to have her mother released.
Her family finds her unwell
After trying many times, Ms. Zhang’s family was finally able to see her on February 18, three months after she was arrested. But the meeting was only 40 minutes long, and they were separated by glass and could only talk through microphones. Guards stood behind them throughout the entire meeting, watching and listening to everything they said, so Ms. Zhang and her relatives felt intimidated and could not say much. Ms. Zhang’s family observed that she looked exhausted and drowsy. In addition, because her letter was written by someone else on her behalf, they thought she might have some difficulty moving her hands or arms; otherwise, she would have written the letter herself.
Her ordeal
To try to "transform" Ms. Zhang and force her to give up her belief in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, labor camp officials have:
-Restricted her sleep. Guards in Division 4 deprived her of sleep or allowed her to sleep for only a very short time. In addition, she had to sleep in one position and was not allowed to turn over. As a result, the right side of her face became swollen.
-Forced her to sit on a small stool for long periods of time. Ms. Zhang was forced to sit on a child-sized stool for a long time without moving. Officials also tried to force her to defame Falun Gong as a form of mental torture.
-Delayed her mail. In a letter written by Ms. Zhang on March 8, she wrote that guard Yang Xuetao mistreated her at the Changping Detention Center. After Yang’s bad deeds were made public on the Minghui website, he retaliated by holding back Ms. Zhang’s mail. As a result, she lost the opportunity to request bail. Three letters written by her family were also held back, and Ms. Zhang has yet to get them.
-Mistreated her generally. Ms. Zhang needs glasses to see distance. After her family gave her glasses to the labor camp, she was given only the glasses, not the case or the cleaning cloth. This one example shows many of Ms. Zhang's basic needs are not being met.
