(Minghui.org) A father and daughter in Shenyang City were both sentenced to prison for filing criminal complaints against former Chinese dictator Jiang Zemin. It was Jiang Zemin who ordering the persecution of Falun Gong.
Mr. Sun Dekun was given 2.5 years in prison and fined 10,000 yuan; his daughter Ms. Sun Yingying was sentenced to 1 year of probation and fined 2,000 yuan. Mr. Sun refused to sign the verdict and vowed to appeal the unjust sentence.
Mr. Sun, his daughter, and his wife Ms. Xing Anmei all practice Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline based on the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. The three were previously arrested in 2013 for refusing to renounce their faith. When they tried to seek justice against Jiang, they were arrested again on April 14, 2016.
Ms. Xing was tried separately and sentenced to 1 year in prison and fined 5,000 yuan. Mr. Sun and Ms. Ying were tried jointly. They first appeared in court on December 6, 2016; both refuted the unsubstantiated prosecution evidence.
The father and daughter were brought to the courtroom again on February 17, 2017, when the prosecutor presented some additional evidence, including a photo of two printers allegedly to belong to Mr. Sun. The defense lawyers argued there was no way by looking at the photo to determine who owned the machines.
The prosecutor also presented a statement issued by the interrogating officers who claimed that they simply forgot to sign their names on the interrogation records used in the first hearing. The lawyers argued that the police couldn’t verify themselves and that a third-party witness was needed to explain why required signatures were missing from the interrogation records.
The lawyers reiterated their clients’ constitutional right to freedom of belief and demanded their acquittal.
Judge Zhao Zhe, however, sentenced Mr. Sun and Ms. Sun to prison towards the end of the hearing.
