(Minghui.org) Mr. Liu Fengchun, a Falun Gong practitioner from Qingdao City, Shandong Province, was sentenced to four years of imprisonment with a fine of 10,000 yuan on November 26 for his faith.
Mr. Liu was arrested at home in Boli Town of Huangdao District on March 20, 2018. Police also confiscated a computer, two printers, Falun Gong books, and other personal belongings.
Officers took his wife for interrogation on the following day. She refused to answer when asked if she was also a Falun Gong practitioner, who gave them the printers, and what practitioners her husband had interacted with. She was released hours later.
No information was heard from Mr. Liu until July 18 when the family hired an attorney, who managed to find out where he was. Mr. Liu had been kept at the Jiaonan Detention Center. His family also learned why he had been arrested. As Mr. Liu distributed Falun Gong materials in Boli Town, someone reported it to police and officers located him through surveillance video.
In the past 19 years since July 1999, the Chinese communist party has been suppressing Falun Gong, a peaceful meditation based on the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. Practitioners have been using creative means, including distributing informational materials, to raise awareness of the persecution of Falun Gong.
Mr. Liu's case was escalated to criminal detention on April 20 and transferred to the Huangdao District Procuratorial Office.
During the trial on September 6, Mr. Liu's attorney entered a not guilty plea on his behalf, as no law in China criminalizes Falun Gong. The presiding judge sentenced him to prison less than three months later.
Mr. Liu has appealed his case.
