(Minghui.org) Ms. Zhou Shuxian’s 8-year-old daughter was traumatized when her mother was sentenced to one year in prison for her faith in Falun Gong.
Falun Gong is an ancient mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since July 1999.
Ms. Zhou credits Falun Gong for curing the epilepsy that had plagued her since she was 8, but she was targeted for holding firm to her faith. She was arrested on July 13, 2019 for passing out informational materials about Falun Gong. Another practitioner, Ms. Fu Deju, who has a physical disability, was also arrested with her.
The police ransacked both women’s homes in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province and confiscated Ms. Fu’s electric tricycle and several thousand yuan she had set aside for her younger sister who had recently been hospitalized with a stroke.
The two women were held at Shenyang City Detention Center. When Ms. Zhou’s lawyer visited her on July 31, her face was swollen and her arms were covered with bruises. Ms. Zhou told the lawyer that the police interrogated and beat her following her arrest. Her face hit the table after being shoved by an officer.
Ms. Fu and Ms. Zhou appeared in Xinmin Court on December 16, 2019. Their lawyers entered a not guilty plea for them. Both practitioners also urged the judge not to participate in the persecution.
Ms. Fu was recently sentenced to 1.5 years in prison with a 5,000-yuan fine, and Ms. Zhou was given one year and fined 2,000 yuan.
Ms. Zhou’s daughter asks for her every day. Ms. Zhou's mother had a heart attack following her arrest and became bedridden.
