(Minghui.org) I have a grandson who was very active and bright at a young age, but he didn't like to study. When he went to preschool, he often played while the other children listened to the teacher. His parents didn't regard this as an issue, since he was still young.
My grandson was very excited about starting first grade, and told his parents that he would work hard, and grow up to be a scientist. We thought that he might have turned a corner in his life, but after a few days he came home saying that he didn't like it there and wanted to change schools.
We spoke with his teacher and found out that he was not listening in class. The teacher had reprimanded him because he constantly had his head on the desk.
I spoke to him when we got home. I said that a student’s job is to study hard at school, and respect one’s teachers and classmates. He responded, “What's the use in getting good grades. I want to be the ‘big boss’, and already have a dozen followers.”
I was angry and laughing at the same time. Young kids, who are just starting first grade, want to be the boss? My grandson said that many of his classmates are “big bosses” and bully the other kids. He wanted to be a big boss to protect them, and defeat the bullies.
My grandson had a good heart, so I said to him, “If you want to become a big boss and protect those who are being bullied, you will have to do well in your studies. You will also have to follow the Falun Dafa principles of “Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance” and become a good student. If you stir up trouble with your classmates every day, and don’t focus on your studies, you wont become a good big boss.”
My grandson seemed to understand and nodded.
However, his next set of school results were not good. His grades for Chinese and mathematics were ranked at the bottom. My son and daughter-in-law were very worried, and reprimand him every day, often making him cry. I told them, “He's rejected school since preschool. It's only normal that his grades are not ideal. Nothing is going to change if you keep worrying. Leave it to me, and let me help him.”
I thought to myself, “Falun Dafa is a great Fa. Many practitioners and non-practitioners who often recite ‘Falun Dafa is good, Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good’, have experienced the power of Dafa.”
So I taught him to recite, “Falun Dafa is good, Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good.” We repeated these auspicious phrases nine times on the way to school. I also taught him the rules and standards for becoming a good person.
After reciting the phrases for a period of time, my grandson started to memorize and study poems from Hong Yin. We memorized two poems every night before bedtime. He really enjoyed this.
We slowly noticed positive changes in him. He was calming down, and no longer wanted to be the big boss. He was focused at school, did his homework, and no longer had an interest in watching television.
My grandson scored very well in his end of year tests. He scored nearly perfect in mathematics, and also received an award for studying diligently. We were pleasantly surprised, and never thought that this could happen.
When my grandson received his grades, he put his palms together in front of his chest (a gesture called “heshi” in Chinese), and said, “Thank you Master for giving me the knowledge to achieve good grades.”
