(Minghui.org) A Qingyuan City, Guangdong Province resident was sentenced to prison for raising awareness about the Chinese communist regime’s persecution of Falun Gong since 1999. His appeal of the verdict was rejected by the higher court.
Mr. Wu Yongjian, a 48-year-old appliance repair shop owner, was arrested on July 16, 2020 by a group of staked-out plainclothes officers as soon as he returned home from work. The police ransacked his home and confiscated his Falun Gong books.
Mr. Wu’s arrest came only five years after he was released in April 2015 from serving a previous four-year term in Beijiang Prison for practicing Falun Gong. The police targeted him this time after finding out that he had sprayed messages in public places with information about the persecution.
While Mr. Wu was being held in the Lianzhou Detention Center, his shop was left unattended. His wife, who doesn’t have a job, struggles financially to take care of their two sons, ages 14 and 2.
The Lianzhou Procuratorate approved Mr. Wu’s arrest on July 31, 2020. He was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison and a 5,000 yuan fine by the Yingde Court in early 2021. He appealed the verdict, but the Qingyuan City Intermediate Court ruled to uphold the original sentence on March 8.
