Senior Citizen Constantly Harassed for Her Faith in Falun Gong

(Minghui.org) Ms. Hu Xiuzhen, 79, can't remember how many times she has been harassed for upholding her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline also known as Falun Dafa that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Having taken up Falun Gong in 1997, Ms. Hu, of Jilin City, Jilin Province, has been enjoying good health in the past two decades. But because she remains steadfast in her faith, she has been repeatedly persecuted. She was detained twice and held in a brainwashing center once, in addition to the many occasions of harassment. 

This article details Ms. Hu’s experience of being harassed by the authorities since 2010. 

A police officer and a residential committee director surnamed Cong showed up at Ms. Hu’s home one day in 2010, claiming to be doing a welfare check. A week later, more than a dozen officers came, pushed her to the ground, handcuffed her and carried her to a minivan. She was taken to a brainwashing center and ordered to sign a statement to renounce Falun Gong. She refused to comply and held a hunger strike in protest. Fearing that she might die in the brainwashing center, the police released her two days later. After Ms. Hu returned home, the police still intimidated her and forced her husband to sign the renunciation statement on her behalf.

Ms. Hu filed a criminal complaint in June 2015 against Jiang Zemin, the former head of the Chinese communist regime who ordered the persecution in 1999. After the police and the local residential committee found out, they harassed her at home and with phone calls.

A Chinese Communist Party Secretary surnamed Zhang, from the local residential committee, personally came to harass Ms. Hu at home many times. One day, he ordered two officers to “check on” Ms. Hu. The two officers said they were simply following orders, and Ms. Hu told them, “We who practice Falun Gong are all good people. Please know that good and evil will be rewarded accordingly. I urge you to remember that Falun Dafa is good and Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good.”

A different pair of officers showed up at Ms. Hu’s door in September 2016. She refused to let them in.

Seven months later, in mid-April 2017, a third pair of officers went to Ms. Hu’s home and asked her if she still practiced Falun Gong. “It’s such a great practice, how can I not do it?” Ms. Hu answered. 

The police asked to talk to her inside her home and also asked her to lower her voice. Ms. Hu responded, “My neighbors all know that I regained my health by practicing Falun Gong. I didn’t do anything wrong. Why do I have to lower my voice? What are you afraid of?” Seeing that she wouldn’t back down, the police left immediately.

Wang Hui and Li Li of the residential committee went to Ms. Hu’s home on October 27, 2020 and ordered her to sign the statement to renounce Falun Gong. They threatened Ms. Hu that her children or grandchildren would have trouble landing jobs or applying to college if she refused to give up Falun Gong. Although Ms. Hu refused to comply, the officials forced her daughter to sign the statement for her.

A residential committee staff member called Ms. Hu’s daughter again in early 2021 to harass her.
