(Minghui.org) A Jiaozhou City, Shandong Province, resident had to be carried by two people to a meeting room when her family came to visit her at the Pudong No. 3 Detention Center on October 22, 2022. Ms. Zhang Xiulan was emaciated and her body kept shaking.
Ms. Zhang told her family that what she was made to go through in detention had gone beyond her limit. She was so weak that she had no strength to wash her underwear and it had been several months since she had a shower. She also had trouble eating. Even if she ate something, she had trouble digesting the food. Severe constipation and systemic pain also plagued her.
Ms. Zhang kept crying during the visit. She said that if she couldn’t go home now, she wouldn’t be able to bear the suffering any longer. Her family applied for medical parole for her after the visit, but the detention center denied it, claiming that Ms. Zhang was faking her suffering.
Ms. Zhang was arrested at her daughter’s home on December 16, 2021, for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline being persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. Her mother, who was staying with them, was petrified and passed away the next day.
After a few days at the Zhongyun Police Station, Ms. Zhang was taken to the Pudong No. 3 Detention Center and has been held there since.
Prior to her arrest, a big tumor had been growing on Ms. Zhang’s head. The detention and abuse in custody further exacerbated her condition. Yet the Huangdao District Court still sentenced her to eight years in prison.
According to an insider, despite Ms. Zhang’s condition, the guards still beat her and verbally abused her, in order to force her to renounce Falun Gong.
Ms. Zhang’s arrest came five years after the passing of her husband in September 2016, after he succumbed to the mental distress from the persecution.
As soon as she finished her husband’s funeral, Ms. Zhang was forced into displacement to avoid further persecution. Every time she heard a police siren, she was paralyzed with fear and anxiety. Her own health also began to decline. She lost a significant amount of weight and became hunchbacked.
Unable to live on her own any longer, she moved in with her daughter, only to be arrested shortly after and sentenced to eight years.
