To avoid frequent harassment for her faith in Falun Gong, Ms. Li Juhua was forced to live away from home beginning in May 2021. She passed away a year later after vomiting black fluid. Her family suspects that her death was caused by the toxic drug she was given years ago in a forced labor camp.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Li of Wuhan City, Hubei Province, began to practice Falun Gong in 1997. She credited the practice for improving her temper and curing her many ailments, including rheumatoid arthritis, sciatica, and heart disease.

Because she refused to renounce Falun Gong, she faced constant harassment and was given three labor camp terms totaling 4.5 years. Her family was also implicated. Her son was fired from his job due to pressure from the government, her daughter was intimidated by the police at school, and her elderly mother died of fear and distress in March 2003.

Ms. Li was first arrested on March 19, 2000, when she went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. She was sent to Hewan Forced Labor Camp for a year and a half.

Shortly after she was released, she returned to Beijing to appeal again in 2002 and given another year and a half in Hewan Forced Labor Camp. The guards forced her to work overtime without pay. Because she refused to write a statement to renounce Falun Gong, she was deprived of sleep for seven days. As soon as she closed her eyes, the guards rubbed mint essential oil into her eyes and the inmates beat her.

Ms. Li’s last arrest was at home on August 19, 2009. After 43 days in Erdaopeng Brainwashing Center, she was transferred to Hewan Forced Labor Camp to serve a one-and-a-half-year term.

Ms. Li recalled that, on her first day in the labor camp, a guard ordered her to renounce Falun Gong and she refused to comply. The guard said, “Looks like we need to go through the procedure with you.”

Shortly after lunch three days later, she suddenly had an intense headache, as if her head was exploding. She kept shaking and felt her internal organs and every cell in her were trembling. She felt extremely nauseous and had severe tightness in her chest.

As time went on, she began to have difficulty keeping her balance and urinating. Her limbs became stiff and she often fell while she was working. She was constantly in a delirious state and couldn’t control her emotions. Her blood pressure remained dangerously high level. Her vision, hearing, and memory declined. Her hair turned gray, and her reactions slowed. She often couldn’t remember where she was, what time it was, or if she had eaten or not.

When the inmates reported Ms. Li’s condition to the guard on duty, the guard said, “It’s only normal for her to have such symptoms.”

According to another practitioner in the labor camp, she saw a guard add unknown substances in three different colors to Ms. Li’s food. Even after Ms. Li was released from the labor camp, the symptoms persisted.

During the “Zero-out” harassment campaign in early 2021, with the authorities attempting to force every practitioner on the blacklist to renounce Falun Gong, the police kept returning to Ms. Li’s home and ordering her to give up her faith. They threatened to take her to the local brainwashing center, suspend her pension, or sentence her if she didn’t comply. The harassment also stressed out her family.

To avoid further persecution, Ms. Li was forced to live away from home beginning in May 2021. In order to find her, the police went to everyone in her family. They threatened her daughter that her own child would be implicated. The police even went to harass her daughter-in-law’s mother and sister, who live in a different city.

Some of Ms. Li’s extended family members were also forced to live away from home to hide from the police.

One week before Ms. Li died, she felt very ill. She vomited a considerable amount of black fluid in her final moments and passed away on June 30, 2022. She was 66.
