Because of upholding her faith in Falun Gong, Ms. Liu Siqing served two labor camp terms and a prison term. By the time she was released in prison in 2014, she had almost completely lost her vision as a result of the torture. She struggled with poor health for the next few years, while facing continued pressure for her to renounce her faith. She eventually passed away on May 4, 2022, at the age of 59. Even months before her death, local authorities harassed her three times.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Below are excerpts from Ms. Liu’s criminal complaint against Jiang Zemin, the former head of the communist regime who ordered the persecution. She detailed some of the torture she had suffered over the years.

I often worked night shifts, which undermined my immune system. I frequently caught a cold, felt dizzy or struggled with other discomforts. On my way to work in 1997, I saw many people practicing Falun Gong. In order to improve my health, I also joined them. After a period of time, I no longer had a cold and was full of energy.
On April 28, 2000, one year after the onset of the persecution, I went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. My father, Lin Kexiang, who also practiced Falun Gong, went with me. After we returned home, officer Tian of the Domestic Security Office arrested us and interrogated us at the Beita Police Station.
Later, they ransacked my home and ordered the factory I worked at to hold a meeting to criticize me. I was demoted and became a janitor. My family was forced to pay 10,000 yuan as the bail bond for me and my father.
After that, my employer arranged for me to do the dirtiest jobs. I was only paid 150 yuan a month. During anniversaries related to Falun Gong or holidays, they held me in isolation in local hotels, with the longest duration being two weeks.
In addition to persecuting me, they forbade my husband from going to work and ordered him to monitor me. They also suspended his salary to incite him to hate me. As soon as he saw me doing Falun Gong exercises at home, my husband would grab my hair and slam my head against the wall. He once held a knife and pointed it at my shoulder, “If I kill you, I will just say you committed suicide because of practicing Falun Gong.”
One night, he tore up my Falun Gong books and pushed me outside. He closed the door and left me in the freezing cold the entire night. Yet I still had to go to work the next day. Unable to live a normal life, I divorced him.
In fact, my husband is a kind person, but his fear of being persecuted overwhelmed him and made him irrational and act in extreme ways.
Even my parents were implicated as well. When their own house was under construction, they moved in with us temporarily. Yet my husband’s supervisor at work drove them out. Wherever they stayed, the police would ransack that person’s home. In the end, no one dared to provide shelter to them and they were forced into displacement.
While I was cooking at home after work on January 18, 2001, I was arrested and taken to the Gaoping Detention Center. The guards forced me to take off my clothes and searched my body. They also tied me up, put a humiliating sign on me and paraded me on the street.
In the detention center, the guards shackled me with another practitioner and forced us to do unpaid labor. I was later given one year at the Nanmusi Women’s Forced Labor Camp, where I was stripped naked and searched and forced to do the unpaid labor and recite the prison rules.
I was arrested again on April 18, 2007, when I went to visit a friend. They stripped me to search my body and didn’t let me take hot showers despite the cold weather. After 30 days at the Jialing District Lockup, I was given a 15-month labor camp term.
My next arrest was on March 1, 2010, after being reported for distributing Falun Gong materials with fellow practitioner Mr. Du Xiuyun. The police violently hit Du’s head, face, and body. I was also beaten and covered with bruises. My eyes became red. After seven days at the lockup, I was transferred to the Huafeng Detention Center and later sentenced to four years by the Jialing District Court.
At Jianyang Women’s Prison, guard Huang Yanping often verbally abused me. She said, “We only have prison guards and bad people here. You are the bad people.”
She forced me to say loudly “I’m a bad person” for every step I took. I was also ordered to recite the prison rules and do the forced labor. The tremendous mental pressure took a toll on my health. I was in a delirious state and always felt very nervous. I developed high blood pressure, diabetes, and a heart condition. My vision declined quickly. The food they provided us was extremely poor and was never enough for me.
My two labor camp terms also dealt my parents a heavy blow. My father later passed away. As my mother continued to witness the persecution I suffered, she once said that words could not describe her pain.
