(Minghui.org) Mr. Zhang Guangqing of Wanyuan City, Sichuan Province, was arrested at home in late April 2001, for telling people about Falun Gong, an ancient mind and body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. He was later given one year of forced labor. He died in Wanyuan City Second Detention Center on March 3, 2002. The detention center director Sun Chenghua and guard Wang Qiang are responsible for his death.
In Wanyuan City Second Detention Center, inmate Wang (first name unknown) told another Falun Gong practitioner on August 12, 2002, that the director of the detention center, Sun Chenghua, and guard Deng Youhuai had repeatedly whipped Mr. Zhang because he refused to renounce his faith. Wang, who did the cooking job in the detention center, delivered dinner to Mr. Zhang on the evening of March 3, 2002, and noted he was fine at the time. Wang was shocked to learn early next morning that Mr. Zhang had died late the night before.
Wang shook his head and said, “Because I am doing the cooking job, I run around the detention center, and have access to certain information. Nevertheless, it is better for me not to to say much since my term is about to expire in a month. If the guards knew I spoke about the truth of Zhang’s death, they would severely beat me and extend my term.”
Mr. Zhang, 62 at the time of his death, was a retired employee of Wanyuan City 513 Power Plant. Before he practiced Falun Gong, he had suffered from many diseases and had been seeking long term medical treatment. To his surprise, all of his illnesses disappeared in less than six months after he took up Falun Gong. He was energetic and hardworking, and was well received by his colleagues.
Ou Chenglin, the head of Wanyuan City Domestic Security Division, as well as instructor Sun Hongmei and police officers Wang Qiang, Huang Zhong, and Jiang Wenxu, broke into Mr. Zhang’s home at the end of April 2001. They ransacked his home and arrested him. He was taken to Wanyuan City Second Detention Center in May to serve a one-year forced labor term, only to die there on the night of March 3, 2002.
The police notified his family of his death three days later. His wife was grief-stricken and demanded an investigation into his death. The authorities rejected her request and threatened her. Meanwhile, they deployed a large number of police officers to guard his body and did not allow his family and friends to see it.
Mr. Zhang’s body was cremated on March 5, 2002 without his family’s consent. The authorities later declared that he had died of a sudden illness.
One Falun Gong practitioner went to Domestic Security Division in early May 2002, and sought justice for Mr. Zhang. Ou was furious and threatened the practitioner, “What do you want? Do you also want to end up like Zhang Guangqing?”
