(Minghui.org) While celebrating her mother’s 89th birthday on September 3, 2021, Ms. Pan Jing, of Dandong City, Liaoning Province, was arrested at the party and later charged with “undermining law enforcement” for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Looking for Falun Gong-related items to use as evidence to charge Ms. Pan, the police even carried her incapacitated mother from her bed to the floor and searched the bed.
Ms. Pan was detained for 15 days, during which time the police submitted her case to the Zhen’an District Procuratorate, which ruled on September 17, 2021, that there was not enough evidence to show how Ms. Pan was a danger to society. The police released her on bail that day but resubmitted her case to the procuratorate a year later on September 16, 2022.
Ms. Pan was taken back into custody on September 19, 2022, and stood trial at the Zhen’an District Court on October 19. The judge attempted to force her to renounce Falun Gong by promising to give her a lighter sentence, but Ms. Pan refused to comply. The authorities kept her at the Dandong City Detention Center and refused to release her to take care of her mother.
As her brother and his wife didn’t have the capacity to care for her mother, they had to take her to a senior living center. Due to lack of care, the elderly woman developed bedsores and also contracted COVID-19. She was rushed to the hospital for resuscitation on December 24, 2022. According to her family, she hadn’t been eating for two days and her lungs had failed.
Ms. Pan’s brother and his family also contracted COVID-19 but didn’t stay in the hospital for long. A friend of Ms. Pan’s came to visit her mother in the evening and helped clean her body. During that time, the elderly mother woke up but was saddened to learn that her daughter was still being detained.
After a week in the hospital, the elderly mother passed away on December 31, 2022.
At the same time, Ms. Pan started a hunger strike to protest the persecution. When her lawyer visited her on January 13, 2023, she was unable to walk. The detention center nonetheless charged her husband 2,000 yuan for force-feeding her and told him to make another 1,000 yuan deposit for her.
Ms. Pan has been practicing Falun Gong for over 20 years. She is known in her family for taking good care of the elderly. When her mother-in-law became bedridden, she cooked for her and kept her clean, as if she was her own mother. Her father-in-law also fell sick later on and was hospitalized. She took care of both her parents-in-law, in addition to her own mother.
Ms. Pan was arrested in December 2000 for doing the Falun Gong exercises in a public plaza. After a month at Dandong City Detention Center, she was transferred to the Dandong Psychiatric Hospital, where she was forced to take unknown medicine. The doctor attempted to give her a drug that would wipe out her memory but relented due to her husband’s strong protest. She held a hunger strike to protest the persecution and was force-fed. Only when she was in critical condition due to the severe injury to her stomach, did the doctor agree to release her.
Ms. Pan was arrested again in September 2002 and given three years at the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp a month later. The guards tied up her legs in the full lotus position and cuffed her hands behind her back for an entire evening. The pain was excruciating. When the guards loosened the rope the next morning, she had large blisters wherever the rope had touched her and she had lost feeling in her feet, legs, arms, and hands. It took her a long time to be able to care for herself again.
Not long after being released, she was arrested one more time in October 2005. She was again force-fed at the Dandong Detention Center for holding a hunger strike. Shortly after, she was given another three years at the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp.
Also because of her hunger strike, the guards restrained her on a bed, pried open her mouth with a metal mouth opener, and force-fed her extremely spicy, salty, or sweet cornmeal, without giving her extra water. Her mouth was also injured by the mouth opener. A guard pinched her nose and said to her, “You’d better die if you don’t eat.” He didn’t let go until she had almost suffocated.
Ms. Pan suffered more torture in the labor camp and was released when she was on the verge of death.
