(Minghui.org) A 49-year-old former lawyer in Lanzhou City, Gansu Province is scheduled to stand trial at Chengguan District Court on April 6, 2023 for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Jin Yijun was previously arrested on December 7, 2011 and given a 1.5-year labor camp term. The Lanzhou City Justice Bureau refused to renew her law license in 2013, rendering her unable to continue her profession as a lawyer.
In early 2021, the Qilihe District Political and Legal Affairs Committee and 610 Office began to harass Ms. Jin and ordered her to renounce Falun Gong. They put up posters smearing Falun Gong outside of her home and in her neighborhood. They also installed many cameras at the entrance of her apartment building and threatened to arrest her if she didn’t write the renouncing statement.
As Ms. Jin remained firm in her faith, she was arrested at home on September 24, 2021. She was first detained at the Qilihe Lockup and then transferred to the Lanzhou City No.1 Detention Center days later on October 2. She has been held there since.
The police submitted Ms. Jin’s case to the Chengguan District Procuratorate, accusing her of “undermining law enforcement with a cult organization,” a standard pretext used to criminalize Falun Gong practitioners. Her previous labor camp term was listed as prosecution evidence against her, as the police accused her of being a repeat offender.
The Chengguan District Procuratorate indicted Ms. Jin on April 22, 2022. Judge Jin Jiyong of the Chengguan District Court was assigned to handle her case.
Ms. Jin’s family was recently informed by the court that her hearing had been scheduled for April 6, 2023.
Because Ms. Jin refused to cooperate with roll call on December 27, 2022, the inmates beat her in retaliation. When a guard came to check on the situation, she left without saying a word upon realizing that it was a Falun Gong practitioner being beaten.
Torture reenactment: handcuffed behind one’s back
For the next 15 days since December 28, Ms. Jin was handcuffed behind her back and deprived of sleep. The inmates took turns watching her. She wasn’t allowed to lower her head or close her eyes, or the inmates would grab her hair and stomp on her. Every inmate tortured her in their own way to prevent her from falling asleep.
During the 15 days, Ms. Jin wasn’t allowed to brush her teeth or drink water. Being extremely thirsty, she attempted to drink the water used to flush the toilet, yet the inmates still didn’t let her. The inmates also barred her from taking a shower or changing clothes, yet they blamed her for smelling bad.
