Ms. Peng Yunkui struggled with declining health after she finished serving time for practicing Falun Gong in September 2021. She passed away a year later, at the age of 72.
Ms. Peng, also known as Peng Yekui, of Wenshan City, Yunnan Province, visited fellow practitioner Ms. Ren Huaiping on May 13, 2020. Moments after she arrived at Ms. Ren’s home, seven plainclothes officers broke in and arrested both of them. Their homes were also ransacked.
Although the police released both practitioners shortly after, they ordered them to report back to the police station whenever they were summoned. The police also tracked down Ms. Peng’s daughter in Kunming (the capital city of Yunnan, about 200 miles from Wenshan) and travelled there to harass the younger woman.
Ms. Peng was arrested again on September 15, 2020 for talking to people about Falun Gong. After six months at the Wenshan City Detention Center, she was taken to the Yunnan Province Second Women’s Prison. It’s not clear how long she was sentenced and whether a trial ever took place.
When Ms. Peng was released on September 15, 2021, she was merely skin and bones and was unable to eat. Unable to recover from the damage to her health, she passed away on September 17, 2022.
Ms. Ren, in her 70s, was also arrested again in September 2020 and held in the Wenshan City Detention Center. It’s not clear what happened to her afterwards.
