(Minghui.org) A Beijing resident was recently sentenced to two years and two months in prison with a 4,000-yuan fine for his faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since July 1999.
Mr. Sun Deli lives in Lisui Village, Shunyi District, Beijing and has been out on bail since his arrest in 2022. He was summoned to the Lishui Village Committee on June 19, 2023 to hear judge Bai Yulong of Shunyi District Court announce the verdict against him.
Bai said Mr. Sun was sentenced on the following prosecution evidence:
- he filed a criminal complaint against former CCP leader Jiang Zemin in 2015 for ordering the persecution of Falun Gong;- he “cursed at” Zhou Yongkang (China’s former security chief who had closely followed Jiang to persecute Falun Gong) at Hanshiqiao Wetland Park in Shunyi District;- he talked to people about Falun Gong in Henan Village and Fengbo Subway Station of Shunyi District.
Bai asked if Mr. Sun agreed with the verdict, and he said no. The verdict only cited the prosecution evidence against him without including any of his lawyer’s defense statement. Additionally, he had already been detained for one month back in 2015 for suing Jiang. He refused to sign the verdict and expressed that he would soon file an appeal with the Beijing Second Intermediate Court.
Mr. Sun’s sentencing stemmed from multiple raids of his home in 2020 and 2021 by various police stations in Shunyi District. Agents from Renhe Police Station raided his home on March 3, 2020, upon receiving a tip that he talked to people about Falun Gong. Two months later, on May 3, officer Zhou Liankai and a few others from Zhang Town Police Station raided his home. They also claimed that someone had reported Mr. Sun for raising awareness of Falun Gong. They left after failing to find any Falun Gong-related materials.
Four officers from Nancai Police Station raided Mr. Sun’s home on October 6, 2021. They didn’t find anything they wanted but still took him to Shunyi District Detention Center for interrogation. They asked him what he had said to people at Fengbo Subway Station two months ago. Mr. Sun demanded to see evidence, but the officers said it was a secret that could not be disclosed to him. He refused to answer their questions and was released on bail 24 hours later.
Mr. Sun was arrested at home on June 3, 2022, by agents from Nancai Police Station. They showed him an arrest warrant issued by the Beijing City Police Department. They took him to Shunyi District Hospital for a physical examination and then held him at Nancai Police Station for 24 hours before releasing him on bail.
Mr. Sun was indicted by the Shunyi District Procuratorate before October 30, 2022. The exact indictment date was unknown. It was also unclear whether a hearing was ever held before judge Bai delivered his verdict to the Lisui Village Committee. Bai also didn’t say when he’d order Mr. Sun to report to prison.
Mr. Sun was detained for 15 days in July 1999.
He was arrested in March 2000 and given one year of forced labor four months later.
He was given two years of forced labor in January 2002 and brutally tortured at Tuanhe Labor Camp.
His next arrest was on September 28, 2004, followed by a three-year prison term in Qianjin Prison.
Mr. Sun was detained for one month after being arrested in January 2014 for talking to people about Falun Gong.
Mr. Sun filed a criminal complaint against Jiang in 2015 and was arrested on November 20 that year by officers from Lisui Village Police Station. Agents from Shunyi District Domestic Security Office interrogated him before ransacking his home. They confiscated his computer and some Falun Gong informational materials. He was later held at Nihe Detention Center for one month.
