An 80-year-old Yingkou City, Liaoning Province, resident, passed away on May 9, 2024, after enduring two decades of persecution for her faith, Falun Gong.
Ms. Liu Yan, a professional watch technician, took up Falun Gong in 1996. After the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution in 1999, she was arrested more than 20 times for distributing Falun Gong materials or for talking to people about it. She was given a three-year prison term at an unknown time and was allowed to serve time outside of prison. She became incapacitated in her later years and eventually passed away.
In 2001, the authorities in Yingkou held its first brainwashing session targeting Falun Gong practitioners and Ms. Liu was arrested in the middle of the night. Although she was soon released due to her extremely high blood pressure, the police arrested her again during the second brainwashing session (dates unknown).
After she was released, officers of the Xishichang Police Station (now known as Yushi Police Station) constantly harassed her and raided her home at least six times.
As a watch technician running her own shop, Ms. Liu earned enough to support her entire family and live well. During a city-wide relocation effort in 2008, she had to close her storefront to make way for development projects. The authorities, however, did not give her monetary compensation or another property as they did to other residents who were ordered to move away. Without a new venue to run her watch repair shop, she and her family struggled to survive.
Ms. Liu was later sentenced to three years and allowed to serve time at home.
During two major political meetings in 2017, captain Jiang Mingfu of the Xishi District Domestic Security Division ordered his officers to harass Ms. Liu. She went to the Domestic Security Division to urge Jiang to not persecute law-abiding citizens like her. He pushed her and she would have fallen to the ground, but she was stopped by the door frame. He also ordered two officers to arrest her.
While Ms. Liu was allowed to go home not long afterwards, the mental distress from the persecution took a toll on her health. She gradually became incapacitated and relied on her husband to care for her.
After struggling with failing health for years, she died on the afternoon of May 9, 2024.
