A 73-year-old resident of Pinggu District, Beijing died on May 8, 2022, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice based on the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.
Ms. Wang Guoying, a retired teacher of the Pinggu District Middle School, had become incoherent and paralyzed in one side of her body in 2017, yet the police kept harassing her at home in her final years in an attempt to make her renounce Falun Gong. Less than five months before her passing, the police still pounded on her door for more than one hour and left only when no one answered the door.
Ms. Wang's husband died on December 17, 2015, eleven days after he learned of the arrest of their niece, also a Falun Gong practitioner who once cared for him when his wife was in detention for her faith.
The couple’s daughter developed severe depression when Ms. Wang was held in a labor camp for her faith between 2006 and 2008. The then college student lost the ability to take care of herself and quit school. After her father’s passing in 2015, she had to stay in a mental hospital year round as her mother faced frequent harassment from the police.
The family tragedy was a result of the communist regime’s persecution policy of “ruining their [Falun Gong practitioners’] reputation, bankrupting them financially and destroying them physically.” Ms. Wang, who also had her pay suspended during her entire forced labor term, once wrote in her complaint against Jiang Zemin, the former Chinese dictator who issued the persecution policy, that she and her family were the direct victims of it.
Ms. Wang credited Falun Gong for curing her frequent fevers and colds. She also learned to be more open-minded and considerate. She took the initiative to mend her strained relationship with her husband’s parents and siblings. When her mother-in-law fell ill, she visited her often and took care of her meticulously.
Ms. Wang went to Tiananmen Square in early 2001 to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. She was arrested and taken to a detention facility in nearby Baoding City, Hebei Province. Only a few days after she was released, she was arrested again while waiting for a bus and taken to the Pinggu District Detention Center.
Ms. Wang was arrested two more times in the next year and held in brainwashing centers both times. She was forced to pay a 4,000-yuan “tuition” fee each time. Her employer, the Pinggu District Middle School, also suspended her pay for two months.
Ms. Wang was arrested again in October 2006 and given two years of forced labor.
The labor camp guards used various means to try to make Ms. Wang renounce Falun Gong. She held firm to her faith and was subjected to brutal beatings, sleep deprivation, long-time standing, and forced labor without pay. The guards also forced her to take unknown drugs every time her blood pressure measured high. When she refused to take the pills, the guards brought her to a hospital to force feed her the drugs. A woman guard once threatened to strip her naked and throw her into male inmates’ cells if she refused to take the drugs.
Ms. Wang was held at the labor camp for one year and nine months before being released ahead of time in June 2008. Her school suspended her pay during her entire labor camp detention.
Her detention also deeply traumatized her loved ones. While she was in custody, her husband had a stroke and became paralyzed in one side of his body. Their daughter, then a college student, developed depression and lost her ability to care for herself. Once a straight A student, she had to quit school. Ms. Wang’s niece, Ms. Yang Xiaofeng, also a Falun Gong practitioner, stepped in to care for her uncle and cousin.
Ms. Wang and Ms. Yang were arrested in July 2013, after being reported for distributing Falun Gong informational materials. Zhang Daming and a few other officers from the Pinggu District Domestic Security Office took the two women to a local detention center. Ms. Wang was denied admission after she failed the required physical examination, but her niece was detained for an unknown amount of time.
After Ms. Wang’s release, the Pinggu District police, the Pinggu District Board of Education, and the Pinggu District Middle School, often harassed her at home and ordered her to renounce Falun Gong. They later parked a car 24/7 outside her home, ready to follow her whenever she went out.
The endless harassment worsened Ms. Wang’s husband and daughter’s conditions. Her daughter’s depression became so severe that the young woman isolated herself in her room every day.
Ms. Yang was arrested on December 6, 2015 while talking to people about Falun Gong. Ms. Wang’s husband was so traumatized by the news that he died 11 days later.
After her husband’s passing, Ms. Wang had to check her daughter into a mental hospital, as the authorities still kept harassing her at home. They often took her pictures and videotaped her without her consent and searched her home at will.
In early 2017, secretary Liu and security guard Li Xiaohui from the Pinggu District Middle School broke into Ms. Wang’s home and ordered her to stop practicing Falun Gong. She was so traumatized that she became mentally incoherent and paralyzed in one side of her body months later.
Ms. Wang faced continued harassment even after she became paralyzed.
Two officers, led by a woman community worker, broke into Ms. Wang’s home on the morning of July 19, 2018. They videotaped her before leaving.
On October 22, 2020, a male officer in uniform and a woman officer in plainclothes broke in and checked every room. They took pictures of Ms. Wang and Ms. Yang, who was cooking for her aunt in the kitchen.
Two police officers and a residential committee staff member knocked on Ms. Wang’s door on March 26, 2021. Her home health aide opened the door. Upon entering, one officer said he was surnamed Wang and he’d just started working in the area. The other two people took pictures of and videotaped Ms. Wang’s home.
The officers asked for the name of Ms. Wang’s aide and where her hometown was. They held up a photo and tried to identify whether she was the person in the photo. The officers also asked for the aide’s phone number. When she refused to answer, one officer went up to her phone that was charging in the living room and called another officer with the phone in order to get her number. They also searched the drawers of Ms. Wang’s cabinets, without showing their IDs or a search warrant.
Two officers from the Xinggu Police Station came on June 22, 2021 and went straight into Ms. Wang’s bedroom. They noted her head was wrapped in gauze and asked her aide what happened. The aide said she took Ms. Wang out for a ride on a tricycle the other day and the tricycle overturned while trying to avoid a car. Ms. Wang’s head hit the ground and bled profusely. She ended up having four stitches.
The police then asked if Ms. Wang could still talk and the aide said no. They next went to another room and saw an empty adult diaper box. They appeared surprised that Ms. Wang needed diapers and the aide reminded them that she had been paralyzed for years. They left after a while.
Another group of officers pounded on the door at around 7 p.m. On December 23, 2021. After more than one hour of continuous knocking, they left when no one came to the door.
Ms. Wang fell into critical condition several times as a result of the police harassment. She died on May 8, 2022.
