Ms. Du Chalian, of Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, passed away on December 12, 2020, after enduring repeated arrests and detention for practicing Falun Gong.

Ms. Du was first arrested in September 2002, after being reported by a coworker for giving him a DVD with information about Falun Gong. Her manager at work also forced her to turn in her Falun Gong books and other materials.

The police raided Ms. Du’s home in 2005 and confiscated her Falun Gong books and a portrait of the founder of Falun Gong.

Ms. Du was arrested again in June 2006 for distributing Falun Gong materials. She was held at the Nanchang City First Detention Center for a month.

Over 20 police officers and residential committee staffers broke into Ms. Du’s home in November 2006. They carried her downstairs from the sixth floor and took her to a brainwashing center in a police car. While she managed to escape the following day, she was forced to live away from home for two months. When she returned home, her workplace fired her.

Ms. Du was targeted again during a gathering with local practitioners on May 13, 2015. The police took her to the police station for a brief interrogation and then released her. Shortly after, the police called her again. When she refused to answer the call, the police came to her home to arrest her. She refused to open the door and the police turned to her neighbors and questioned them about her situation. In the evening, Ms. Du left home and stayed outside for eight days to avoid the harassment.

Ms. Du was arrested three more times in September and November 2018, as well as September 2019. The mental pressure from the persecution took a toll on her health. She fell seriously ill with systemic pain shortly after her latest arrest. She was unable to eat or sleep well. After struggling with failing health for a year, she died on December 12, 2020. She was survived by her husband and son.
