A 63-year-old resident of Anyang City, Henan Province, died on June 27, 2022, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.

Ms. Li Aiping, an engineer by training, twice went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong after the persecution began in July 1999. After one arrest, she was given two years of forced labor but denied admission to the local labor camp due to her high blood pressure. Instead of releasing her, the police held her in a brainwashing center for two years.

Ms. Li was arrested again on August 2, 2004, and taken to a brainwashing center. She went on a hunger strike in protest and was released after she became seriously ill. Wang Yuansheng from the 610 Office arranged for six agents to stay in her home to monitor her, severely disrupting her family’s daily life. In despair, she left home and was fired from her job.

While in displacement, Ms. Li was arrested in 2008 and given three years of forced labor. In the Shibalihe Women’s Labor Camp, she refused to renounce her faith and was subjected to various forms of abuse. She was held in solitary confinement for long periods of time. She was not allowed to talk to anyone and was forced to stand for long hours. Her blood pressure shot up. The labor camp guards ordered her to take medication, which she refused to do, so they laced her food with the drug secretly. She discovered it when the food tasted strange. She went on a hunger to protest and the labor camp released her one year ahead of time.

After another arrest on February 17, 2015, Ms. Li was sentenced to three years on November 12 that year. The Wenfeng District Court didn’t notify anyone of the secret hearing. She was admitted to the Xinxiang Women’s Prison at an unknown time.

During her prison term, Ms. Li’s pension was suspended. After she was released on February 16, 2018, her family purchased a private pension for her (not through her former employer). The local social security bureau stopped her pension in August 2020 even though she had been making contributions to it. The agency even ordered her to return the pension that had been issued to her prior to August 2020. She had to pick trash to make ends meet, on top of having to face constant harassment by the police. The relentless persecution eventually claimed her life on June 27, 2022.
