An 82-year-old resident of Panjin City, Liaoning Province, died on November 17, 2022, while still serving a one-year house arrest for his faith in Falun Gong.

Mr. Zhou Shaotang’s latest persecution stemmed from his arrest on January 13, 2021, while he was talking to people about Falun Gong at a local fair. They took him back to his home in the afternoon to raid it. His wife, in her 80s, was so terrified that she froze and he collapsed. The police still intended to take him away but relented after a three-hour standoff with his family.

The police reported the situation to higher-ups, who agreed to not take Mr. Zhou into custody. However, he was subjected to frequent harassment at home afterwards. His health declined quickly under the tremendous pressure. The local court held two hearings of his case at home in early December 2021 and sentenced him to one year of house arrest on December 8 that year. They also placed a cell phone in his home to tap his conversations with his family. He died on November 17, 2022.

Prior to this, Mr. Zhou twice went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in 2000 and was arrested on December 31 for unfurling a banner on Tiananmen Square. He was sentenced to four years by the Dongcheng District Court and served time in the Lingyuan First Prison in Liaoning Province.

About eight officers raided Mr. Zhou’s home on February 28, 2012, and confiscated his Falun Gong books and other valuables. He was detained for an unknown amount of time.
