A 70-year-old resident of Jiamusi City, Heilongjiang Province, died on December 11, 2022, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.

Ms. Wang Shumei took up Falun Gong in 1998. She went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong on May 29, 2000, and was arrested. Officer Liu Tiejun from the Xiangyang District Police Department in Jiamusi City picked her up from Beijing on June 4 that year and took her straight to the Jiamusi City Detention Center.

When she went on a hunger strike in protest, guard Cui and four big inmates held her down as two of them stepped on her feet and two others pulled her arms. Cui yanked her head back by her hair and slapped her on the head so hard that she saw stars. Cui then pinched her nose so she had to open her mouth to breathe, allowing Huang, the detention center doctor, to quickly insert a mouth opener.

Huang damaged Ms. Wang’s teeth and gums with the mouth opener, leaving her mouth full of blood. He then used a bloody feeding tube that had just been pulled out of another practitioner’s mouth to force-feed her. Huang stirred the tube around to make her suffer even more. She resisted with all her might, and he was unable to get any food in. Her hair and body were covered with congee. The feeding tube was covered with blood and stomach fluid when it was pulled out.

Ms. Wang visited her parents in their home province of Shandong in 2000 and talked to some local practitioners. The Shandong police contacted their counterparts in Jiamusi and the latter showed up at her home on September 27 that year and deceived her into giving them her parents’ phone number. Officer Liu Zhitong in her parents’ local village then went to the elderly couple’s home. Only her mother was home. Liu threatened to shoot Ms. Wang to death.

Ms. Wang’s mother was so traumatized that she became mentally disordered 16 hours later. She told everyone she saw that her daughter had been shot to death and that she had to find her daughter. The elderly woman would run away from home every day. Once she broke her leg while away from home and became bedridden. She cried for her daughter until she died at an unknown time. Ms. Wang’s father later also passed away, and she was unable to see either of her parents one last time.

Ms. Wang was arrested in November 2000. It was snowing hard that day. Her husband tried to stop the police from taking her away and chased after the police cruiser. He couldn’t catch it and just remained standing outside. When Ms. Wang was released a few hours later, he was still standing in the snow. He started to have panic attacks after that and would shiver whenever he heard a knock on the door.

The police tried to deceive Ms. Wang into reporting to them in 2002, but she refused to comply, so they arrested her brother and held him for hours. Her son was repeatedly harassed at work by the police. He was unable to cope and wrote a suicide note. Fortunately their family found out about it in time and stopped a tragedy.

Ms. Wang was arrested on May 12, 2006, while putting up Falun Gong banners. She had a sudden heart episode, and the arresting officers dumped her out on the side of the road instead of taking her to a hospital. A good samaritan helped her get home.

The police continued to monitor Ms. Wang in the years followed. She went to visit a friend on the night of September 10, 2012, and was arrested there after a large numer of officers pried the door open. Her friend’s son, who was sleeping, as well as her fellow guests, were all arrested.

Ms. Wang was petrified by the arrest and had another heart episode. She foamed at the mouth and lost consciousness. Two officers guarded the emergency room. After she came to, they attempted to take her away and only relented after the doctors condemned them. Later that night, she managed to escape, still barefoot.
