A 74-year-old man in Yi County, Liaoning Province, could not even recognize his children when he was released after serving seven years in prison for practicing Falun Gong. He died four days later, on October 21, 2025.
Mr. Men Yulin took up Falun Gong in January 1997, and recovered from various ailments including neurasthenia and rectal disease. His bad temper was also gone, and he became kinder and more tolerant. His wife, Ms. Shen Guizhu, joined him in practicing Falun Gong in spring 1998, and also regained her health.
The couple was targeted for upholding their faith after the Chinese communist regime started the persecution of Falun Gong in July 1999. Mr. Men was arrested on April 22, 2002. After being released 12 days later, he was still frequently harassed at home. To avoid further persecution, he went into hiding. His wife died at an unknown time after being repeatedly persecuted.
Mr. Men later returned home but was arrested again on October 18, 2018, by officers from the Qianyang Township Police Station and the Yi County Police Department. They put him at the Yi County Detention Center. His son and daughter went to the police station once and the police department twice to demand his release, but to no avail.
Mr. Men was later sentenced to a seven-year prison term and admitted to the Shenyang City First Prison. After years of abuse, he became dazed and could not even recognize his own children when he was released on October 17, 2025. He died four days later.
While the details of Mr. Men’s prison abuse remain to be investigated, the Shenyang City First Prison is notorious for sparing no efforts in its attempts to make steadfast Falun Gong practitioners renounce their faith. A high-security division was specifically set up in the prison to torture practitioners. Many practitioners were also held in isolated rooms on the fourth floor, where all the windows are covered to conceal the torture that takes place inside. In just two years, at least three practitioners died under questionable circumstances at the prison. They are Mr. Liu Dianyuan, Mr. Di Yongchi, and Mr. Yan Xuguang.
The torture methods used by the guards and inmates included force-feeding the practitioners feces and urine, restraining them on the tiger bench, making them sit for long hours, scalding them with boiling water, spraying a pepper solution into their eyes, smashing their toes with heavy objects, scraping their ribs with hard objects, hanging them up by their wrists, forcing their legs into splits, shocking them all over with electric batonls, and putting ice cubes on their testicles. Many practitioners were also deprived of sleep, were not allowed to use the bathroom, and were forced to drink water from a toilet.
In addition to the physical torture, the practitioners are forced to watch propaganda videos slandering Falun Gong and/or listen to defamatory audio recordings played at high volume.
